St Marys Star

Gomersal St Marys CE Primary School

Shirley Avenue,
Gomersal Cleckheaton,
BD19 4NA

Issue: 4
Date: 14/11/14

On Tuesday 11th November our

whole school attended St Marys
Church for our annual Remembrance
Service. The service was led by
Reverend Karen with the help of
some Y2 and Y6 children.
We remembered through songs,
poems, prayers and silence, those
who have given their lives in war.
Each class placed a poppy or wreath
as a mark of our respect and
remembrance.

Class 2 have been busy collecting and filling over 60 shoeboxes for our
Operation Christmas Child Appeal!
Thank you to everyone who helped in any way to make Christmas special for
children in need all around the world.

School Parliament

Hello, we are the new School

Parliament representatives. Last
week we went to our first meeting
at Heaton Avenue School. We met
with other school children from
local schools and discussed plans
Its always lovely to hear people comment

for a Christmas carol concert to be

positively on the behaviour of our children

held at St Lukes Church. We will

so I would like to share with you that we

received a phone call from Millbridge J, I
and N School saying that they were
extremely impressed with our Year 3 and

go to meetings regularly and plan

events for our local schools to do
together in the future.

4 children at swimming. One child also

found some money and handed it to the
bus driver! Well done children!
Remember we told you a couple of weeks
ago that wed written to some children in
a French school? Well, theyve written
back! Their letters arrived last week and
we were really excited to read what they
had to say. They told us all about their
families and some children even included
photos of themselves and their brothers
and sisters. They sent the letters to us in
Halloween cards which made it even more
special. We are now planning our next
letters. We will send ours in Christmas
cards!
Year 6

Y6 Visit to the Gurdwara

Gurdwara Visit by Logan Gledhill Y6.
On Wednesday October 22nd Year 6 went to Huddersfield Gurdwara because we were learning
about the Sikh Faith. Our host was called Talvinder and he showed us around the Gurdwara.
First we played some games where we had to identify the symbols on the outside of the building
and we looked at the flag. Then we went inside and entered the kitchen (langhar). We wrote
down everything we could see and Talvinder talked about them.
Before we went upstairs we had to take off our shoes and wash our hands. When we got
upstairs Talvinder told us about the 5Ks. Later we went into the praying room where we had to
be quiet because the Guru Granth Sahib was there. We tasted a sweet food called prashaad, I
didnt like it, but some did.
After the big room we saw the Guru Granth Sahibs bedroom which I thought was strange
because the Guru Granth Sahib is a book but the Sikhs treat it as a Guru.
Later we went back to the langhar and tasted some food. I had curry with a chappati and some
rice pudding; they tasted sensational. I enjoyed a very good day out.

Year 4 celebrated the end of our

Ancient Greeks topic with a Greek day.
They dressed up as ancient Greeks,
made and ate Greek food and
performed a Greek tragedy for parents.

Our book fair was a huge success;

we sold 750 worth of books and
raised lots of money to buy new
books for school.

Children In Need
A huge thank you to everyone
that has contributed to our
Children In Need appeal. We
certainly werent in any danger
today as superheroes took

proved it, raising over 200

your support.
