Spending their First Times by Ruel Andaya

UP ERG-LB held a Feeding Program last

August 20, 2009 as its semi-annual community
service activity at McDonalds-Vega Arcade Center.
The UP ERG-LB was then joined by 22 street
children. The excitement of the children were very
obvious in their gestures and in their concept of
punctuality. The External Committee spearheaded
the activity with a short yet lively program for the
children and for the members of the organization as
well. There were fun games facilitated by Ate
Ben-Ben and with the help of the rest of the
committee. As everyone waited for the meal, some
of the members entertained the children. It was very
explicit that the children were having a good time
chatting with the members of the organization,
spending “camera moments” with their newly-found
“Ates and Kuyas” and sharing their feelings to the
members of the organization (Kuya, pasama naman
po sa CR..^_^). And as the activity get along, one
member of the organization unconsciously asked a
street child, “First time mo ba dito?” And without
any hesitation, the child reply, “Opo, ngayon lang
ako nakapasok dito.” From the expression of the
member, it was quite obvious that he was “moved
by the fact” (sino kaya ito? CLUE: R _ _ _x.. hahah!).
The program ended by 1:00 pm and all of the
members, together with the rest of the street
children, went home feeling fulfilled. Maybe some of
them were not aware on how they have touched the
lives of those street children by not just sharing
them McDonalds food but also by showing them
that there were people who will willingly spend a
quality time for them. Once more, the activity had
not just manifested that every member of the UP
ERG-LB possessed a mind that thinks, but also a
heart that cares.

A Message from the President
One Family
I t took me a long time to even begin this line. I tried hard and deeply think of a way to inspire you, my fellow
ERGmates. But what the heck, let me just pour out my thoughts and feelings as I type this article.

It’s been five years since this organization has been revived. Unfortunately, I did not see the complete growth
of ERG. But it doesn’t matter to me now. As what everybody says, it’s the present and the future that matter. Leave
the past behind. We have been misjudged, undermined, underrated. And how did we fight back? We proved them
wrong and showed them what we really got. We have hosted the EngMeet successfully two years back. We have
organized orientations, convocations, team buildings, outreach activities, and sem-enders in trendy manner.
Improvement has been our aim since. How have we done this? It’s all because of every member who commits and
takes ownership of the organization. It does not matter how few we are but how each individual contributed his/her
time, finances, and most especially the heart for the love of this organization.

We have encountered a lot of obstacles as we spend more time here in UPLB and sadly for some of us, more
time than we’re supposed to. We may have failed one, two or most of our subjects. We should not see this as a
disappointment but as a challenge to become better. Do not put the blame onto other persons or things but only to
yourself. It is because every thing that happens to you depends on your decisions. Be not be afraid to accept this
fact. We are always here prepared to lend a hand when you are ready to stand up and regain your lost pride. Always
remember that you are not alone.

I have come to love every piece of surprise this organization has to offer – the fun, laughter, games, songs,
cheers, hangouts, booze, and most importantly the people comprising it. I am grateful to have companions who are
still proud to be a member despite ERG’s negativities and deficiencies. It is true that in ERG, having fun is never
really a challenge but a natural quality we have always been able to share among ourselves.

We may be the rowdiest, loudest, and most playful organization in CEAT but what makes us great is we still
produce results. I remember one alumnus said, “Dati para lang kaming isang barkadahan, ngayon org na talaga
kayo,” thus a definite sign of progression. We are still however a brotherhood/sisterhood that never ceases to have
fun, but this time, we are starting to realize what we are able to accomplish as a group.

So my dear ERGlings, trust me, I may not be perfect but as your Small Daddy, I will be protecting you in the
best way I can. Nevertheless, I won’t be able to do this alone. I will constantly be needing your cooperation. That’s
what a family does. We help each other. No brother or sister left behind. We have already emERGed. Now it’s to
time to ERGcelerate – to think faster, to move quicker and to step UP to excellence. We are one family in ERG!

ERG FACES AMAZING RACE by Richelle dela Cruz

The UP Engineering Radio Guild- LB held its

Amazing Race II last October 10, 2009. The goal of
the activity is to tighten the bond between the
members. This was the organization's last activity for
the first semester.

The Game
The first station was located at the EE Building.
The members were given their respective groupings.
By the power of faith and luck, each group picked a
paper, where different sounds of the animals were
written which they have to mimic. This is the catch.
With the supervision of Aryan and Topher, each
member is blindfolded and located far away from
each other. Since they're blindfolded and got no idea where their groupmates were, they have to make
their sounds louder – loud enough for them to gather up. Some cheated the sounds. Some peeked in
their blindfolds. But the fun was just starting. The first group who "herd" up together excelled to the next
stop.
On their way to the next stop, each team collected green flags with letters UP ERG. The first flag
was a bonus flag with the letter "U". The second flag was placed near the Engineering building and along
the bridge. The other teams were lost at the beginning for they thought that there were flags along the
Agronomy Building. The leading team headed directly to the next challenge.
Waiting at the Carabao Park, Roms prepared
the next exciting task. Each teams has to pick a paper
with the tasks they have to do. Some picked the task
of taking a picture with Jollibee. Some picked the
tasks of imitating the commercial of Mar Roxas. The
others have to take a picture with Oble. They even
asked a person to write UPLB in their forehead. And
also, they asked somebody to apply nail polish. The
station required a lot of guts and thick face.
Still catching up with their breath, the teams
moved on to the next stop which was at CEAT. In
there, each team will have a representative who
picked a paper written the amount which he/she has
to get from a basin of flour.
7
The thrill was they have to do this using their mouth and not through their hands. This challenge was
about having good strategies to complete the goal.
With no time to waste, the teams quickly headed to the Math Building for an appetizing challenge.
For some, this served as a treat. But for others, it’s not. In this course, one has to choose which type of egg
he/she has to eat. The choices are red eggs, white boiled eggs, and balot. Each team was required to eat
three eggs. Almost everybody enjoyed this since most have not eaten their breakfast.
The race started to fire up. When the competition become more intense, other teams still didn't
lose their hope. The next stop was an uphill race towards New Dorm. After the egg challenge, the teams
have to make use of eggplant. This was like a relay challenge. The first person tied in his waist a straw rope
where the eggplant hung. The member must hit the small cap of any bottled drinks towards his teammate
waiting in the next line. Everybody grind their way to reach the finish line. This challenge required patience
and strategy.
As the end of the race drew near, the teams ignited more to win the race. Of course, even though
they've finished all the tasks, they must still complete the flags. The second to the last stop and the most
pain-staking task was in the Molawin river. Everyone must pave their way and carefully walked through the
mossy rocks. They even have to swim their way. Along the river, Jayson and I planted the remaining flags
to strategic places. We even put fake flags to spice up this course. Waiting at the end of the challenge,
another task must also be accomplished. Each team must present the complete flags and they must be
complete for them to excel to the next and final stop.
Win or lose, what matters in this race is the experience shared by everyone. After cleaning
themselves, everybody headed to the org house for a small feast. This is indeed another memorable
experience for the organization and I hope that the bond between members was not only tightened but
was also strengthened.

The Winners
After all these struggles, one
team was only crowned the winner of
this race. However, consolation prizes
were given to the second and third
place. The first team to arrive at the
Carabao Park was the team of Iske,
Ivan, Ghe, BJ, and Rolex. Following
them at second place were Jams,
Nikki, Maui, Sharrae, and Vien. In the
third place was the team of Tats, To-
len, Stoi, Jack, and Ix. Bry, Cath, LA,
Sammy, and Gideon got fourth place.
And last but not the least, the last
team to arrive composed of Chuck,
Ruel, Neslie, Epz, and Jun.

ERG holds Orientation by Francis Asebuche
UP ERG-LB held its 1st installment of orientation this school year 2009-2010 at KFC Grove Los Baños
last July 1, 2009. Mark Erben Jaim, VP for Membership and Recruitment, headed the event while Cathelene
Batiquin and Rommel Sarsonas emceed for the night. It was attended by almost 30 orientees.
The occasion started with a prayer led by Jessel Loise Lamzon. The head of the organization, yours
truly, welcomed everyone with a brief history of the organization - its background, objectives, and past
activities. It was soon followed by the introduction of the Executive Committee and the members
comprising each committee. An audio-visual presentation about the organization, made by Kit Manlangit,
was shown for the orientees to get a feeling of how it is to be an ERG member. Also, some alumni took
time to attend that night. They were Angelo Mag-atas, Eunice Suministrado, and Limuel Peraz. Engr. Noah
Badayos, the organization’s junior adviser , surprised us by his presence and even shared a short speech
about being a pioneer member of UP ERG-LB. Inspirational testimonials delivered by Eunice, Angelo, and
Brian Job Malonzo, sure helped some attendees make their decision to join the “gang”. While the food are
being served, batch Pulse performed to entertain (or distract?) the dining guests. As for the last part of the
program, questions were raised and answered to clear up some doubts and uncertainties of the orientees.
The night ended successfully with a bunch of happy members smiling on the camera, taking
pictures as if there’s no tomorrow, without a hint of tiredness in their faces amidst the preparations and
the long day that was. Kudos ERG! Congratulations to everyone of us!
