WEATHER WARNING
1. FIVE cms and above rainfall in 24 hours and wind velocity of
65kmph is considered dangerous for trains working.
2. Arrangements exist with the meteorological department, Govt of
India for issuing telegrams WX warning, whenever storms, gales or
heavy rainfall are expected.
3. The entire SCR is divided into 7 zones for the purpose of WX
warning.
4. WX warning messages are classified as XXW(WX warning) or 000
( WX immediate) . These messages are delivered directly by the
Meteorological Department to the central control. Office.
5. Central control office delivers these messages to the divisional
control office and the divisional control office delivers these
messages to
a. DRM, Sr. DOM/DOM, Sr. DEN/DEN
b. AEN, IOW, PWI - through the SMs concerned.
c. All the SMs in the Zone concerned.
6. A Register is maintained in each control office and stations, showing
full particulars of receipt of and action taken on the WX warning
message.
Action to be taken by SM on receipt of WX Warning:
1. The SM of duty where AENs/ IOW/ PWI are headquartered, will
immediately handover to the parties concerned a copy of the
verbatim telegram received from the controller and obtain an
acknowledgment.
2. If IOW/AEN/PWI is out of head quarters the SM will advise the
controller on duty, who will then be responsible for ensuring that the
contents of the telegram are communicated to the eng officials at the
station concerned.

3. The SM on duty will also send for the P-way mate of the station yard
gang, explain to him the contents of the telegram and obtain his
acknowledgement.
4. A register will be maintained at the station showing the date and time
of receipt of WX warning, the full extent of the message and the date
and time of advice to the officials concerned.
5. The office copy of the message on which an acknowledgement has
been obtained should alos be pasted in the register.
Action plan for cyclones and Storm weather warnings:

Precautions to be taken by the Station Master, Driver, Guard
regarding the Control of Trains:
1. When a weather warning message is received forecasting heavy or
cyclonic storm and high winds and there is reasonable doubt that
sever storm and high winds are going to break out that may endanger
the safety of passenger/train, the SM may in consultation with the
Guard and Driver of the train, detains it until the storm and high
winds abate and it is considered safe to allow the train to proceed
form his station.
2. Inspite of the action out lined above, should the driver be still caught
on run in a storm and high wind of an intensity which in his optinion
are likely to endanger the safety of passenger/train he should bring
his train with the least delay to a halt avoiding such stoppage at
places like sharp curves, high embankments cuttings and bridges.
Trains can be restarted in consultation with the guard only after the
storm and high winds abate and it is considered safe to proceed.
3. The guard and driver of the train in cooperation with the railway
staff traveling in the train shall try to see that doors and windows of
all coaches are kept open by the passengers to allow free passage of
the wind through the coaches.
