Technology Integration Assignment

Introduction:
This lesson is intended to introduce 4th grade students to Google docs, a service
offered under Google Drive and will span two days. The students will be expected to
already know how to use a computer and the Internet in at least a limited capacity and
will give instruction on how to use the program. It will cover how to create a document,
how to rename a document, how to create a file and put the created document into the
folder.

State Standards
Standards:
From Mississippi Department of Educations Office of Curriculum and Instruction:
Prior to completion of Grade 5, students will:
1. Use keyboards and other common input and output devices (including adaptive
devices when necessary) efficiently and effectively.
2. Discuss common uses of technology in daily life and the advantages and
disadvantages those uses provide.
3. Discuss basic issues related to responsible use of technology and information and
describe personal consequences of inappropriate use.
4. Use general-purpose productivity tools and peripherals to support personal
productivity, remediate skill deficits, and facilitate learning throughout the curriculum.
5. Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital
cameras, and scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and
publishing activities, to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the
classroom.
6. Use telecommunications efficiently to access remote information, communicate with
others in support of direct and independent learning, and pursue personal interests.
7. Use telecommunications and online resources (e.g., e-mail, online discussions, web
environments) to participate in collaborative problem-solving activities for the purpose of
developing solutions or products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.
8. Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos,
educational software) for problem solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning
activities.
9. Determine which technology is useful and select the appropriate tool(s) and
technology resources to address a variety of tasks and problems.
10. Evaluate the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, comprehensiveness, and bias of
electronic information sources.

Objectives:
Students will sign into Google, navigate to Google Drive where they will create a
document, explore briefly the different format settings and type a short paragraph about
themselves. They will learn how to name and rename a document, create and name a
folder then move the document into the folder.

Select Strategies, Technology, Media & Materials


Strategies:
This lesson will use demonstration and tutorial to instruct the students in how to
navigate Google docs.
Technology, Media & Materials:
This lesson will require that each student have access to a fully functioning
computer with internet connection and Google Chrome web browser.

Utilize Technology, Media and Materials


Preview Materials
The instructor should be familiar with Google Chrome and Google docs with a
comprehensive understanding of how to use the program. They should be able to
create, manipulate, rename and move documents into folders they also create. The
instructor should also be prepared to sign into Google, having their email and password
at the ready to prevent any technical difficulties.

Prepare Materials:
To prepare the materials the instructor should ensure that is computer is operational,
connected to the internet and has the web browser Google Chrome downloaded and
that Google Docs can be accessed.
Prepare the Learner:
- The instructors should review with the students what they know about accessing
the internet
- Assuming the students signed up for an email address in a previous class - or had
one assigned to them by the school- review how to sign in and ask students to locate
their address and passwords
- Explain the ways in which Google Docs could be useful to students

Provide the Learning Experience:


Day 1
- Have students sit down at a computer, and instruct them to open Google Chrome.
- The instructor should use their own computer and instruct their students to follow
along.
- The instructor should demonstration how to sign into Google, to find Google drive
and how to create a document.
- At this point the instructor should instruct the students to type a short paragraph
about themselves. Their name, age, date of birth and perhaps siblings and parents
names.
- Demonstrate and have the students change the name of their document to About
Me
- Demonstrate and have students create a folder called School Work and to move
About Me to the folder.
- Instruct the students to sign out, close the browser and shut down their computers.
Day 2:
- Have students pick a partner who will not sit near them but they should exchange
email addresses.
- Have students sign into Google and open Google drive. Allow them to do this on
their own, assisting when and where its asked.
- Have students open their document from the previous lesson.
- At this point, demonstrate how to share a document with their partner, then instruct
each student to do so making rounds to insure all students understand the process.
- Instruct students to spend the rest of class proof reading each document together
explaining how shared documents work. Make rounds to insure students stay on task
and helping where is needed.
