Sandusky Sentenced
No less than 30 years and no more than 60. Thats
the prison sentence for Jerry Sandusky. He is the
5 former football coach at Penn State University who
was convicted in June of sexually abusing young
boys. An investigation blamed Penn State officials
for covering up the situation.
10 Sanduskys lawyers say they plan to appeal his
conviction. The night before he was sentenced,
Sandusky maintained his innocence. He said, quote,
"They can make me out as a monster ... but in my
heart I know I did not do these alleged disgusting
15 acts."
One of Sanduskys victim said that the prison "will
never erase what he did to me." The judge in the
case told the victims that they would be
20 remembered for their courage.
Nobel Prizes
The prizes are actually awarded in December, but
the Nobel Committee is announcing this years
25 winners in all six categories over the next week or
so. It start on Monday with Nobel Prize for
medicine. This year, the award is being shared by
scientists from England and Japan for their work
with human cells. // What they discovered, is that
30 mature specialized cells can be reprogrammed to
develop a new completely different types of cells.
Scientists think this could be a major breakthrough
for medical treatments.

Fire Safety
This week from October 7th, through the 13th is
fire prevention week. In order to recognize that,
45 some government agencies are providing new
statistics about home fires. // Every year around
2300 Americans die in home fires. And more than
12,000 others are injured. So how these fires get
started? Cooking equipment is the number one
50 cause. Between 2008 and 2010, 40 percent of home
fires started with cooking equipment. // Heating
and air conditioning units are another big cause.
That includes portable space heaters. Officials say,
the best ways to be prepared are to make sure there
55 are working smoke alarms in the house. And for
families to come up with and actually practice a fire
escape plan.
Benghazi Investigation
60 Technically, Congress is in recess until after next
months elections. But yesterday, one House
Committee held a hearing on last months terrorist
attack against the U.S. facility in Libya. // On
September 11th, the American consulate building in
65 the Libyan city of Benghazi was attacked. Four
Americans including the U.S. ambassador to Libya
were killed in the violence. // American facilities in
other countries are under the responsibility of the
U.S. State Department. And a lot of yesterdays
70 hearing focused on whether the State Department
was prepared for this kind of attack. House
members wanted to know if there were enough
security agents in Benghazi.
