This essay was made as the final project of High
Intermediate Four level in LBPP LIA Galaxy. The title of this essay
is The Advantges of Ecolabel Policy for the Environment. The
purpose of making this essay is to explain some of the
advantages

of

the

Ecolabel

policy

that

can

protect

our

environment from exessive damages. Through this essay the

writer tries to make readers aware of the advantages of Ecolabel
policy.
The writer realizes that this essay still needs a lot of
improvements, therefore, suggestions and criticisms are needed
to make the writer better in writing an essay in the future. Finally,
the writer hopes this essay will be useful for the readers.

The Advantages of Ecolabel Policy for Environment

In globalization era right now, many people are more
concerned about the environment protection. Some environment
problems such as water pollution, soil erosion, air pollution, acid
rain and flood happen because of companys activities that are
not

concerned

about

environment

issue.

Many

countries

especially in Europe and America are really concerned about

environment protection, therefore they use Ecolabel as

standardization for any kinds of products. Ecolabel stands for

eco means environment and label means sign or certificate.
So, Ecolabel means a label or certificate that is put in a product
or product packaging, to give the information that the product
made is environmentally friendly. At the beginning, Ecolabel is a
standardization of environmentally friendly products which are
issued by European Union to protect their citizens from products
or services that are dangerous to environment. This label or
certificate will be given by the Ecolabel institution or government
to the companies after they do some tests about the life-cycle-of
the

products,

from

the

raw

material

until

the

life-cycle

consideration. This label is used in any kinds of products from

household tools to agricultural production tools. Ecolabel has
been implemented in European Union since 16 th July 2008. This
fenomenon also increases in developing countries such as
Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. In 1994, Indonesia founded
Lembaga Ekolabel Indonesia (LEI) lead by Prof. Emil Salim.

our

avoid illegal fishing.
First, Ecolabel policy can help the government to reduce
illegal logging that happens in its country. Illegal issue is a global
problem that happens in almost every country in the world.
There is no doubt that people consume a lot of materials which
are made from woods, starting from a small product like tissue
and paper to a large scale of products such as furniture and
property materials. Because of the increasing demand of those
products, the illegal logging practice also increases. The illegal
logging activity definitely destroys our environment such as
biodiversity reduction, habitats degradation and ecosystems
function,

the

carbon

emission,

erosion,

and

ecosystem

degradation. With Ecolabel policy, the government can minimize

those problems. For example, a company which runs a business
in paper and pulp industry, has to follow this kind of rules: do not
take the raw materials form conservation areas or protected
forests. If the company follows the rules, the LEI will give a
certificate or symbol that the product is environmentally friendly.
Ecolabel policy directly pushes the company to pay big attention
to environment, so that it can prevent illegal logging from
increasing. Some companies in Indonesia that have been
certified by Ecolabel are PT. Pabrik Kertas Tjiwi Kimia, PT Furni
Jawa Lestari and PT. RAPP.
Second, besides preventing illegal logging, Ecolabel policy
also gives contribution in handling waste problem. As explained
before that Ecolabel evaluates products from the beginning
(production) until the end user (consumer). This label makes sure
that the product is environmentally friendly. Take an example in
Indonesia, there are many textile companies which use chemical

materials. These companies have to obey the government

procedure that the chemical materials are not dangerous to
environment. The industrial waste must be reprocessed before it
is released. The packaging of the product has to follow such
Ecolabel packaging criteria such as reusable and or recyclable or
biodegradable. With Ecolabel, the company will obey the
government or institution procedure about the waste or pollutant
that the company releases. Ecolabel indicates that a product is
safe to consume and it is also safe to the environmet.
Third, Ecolabel can also be used to avoid the illegal fishing.
Because of the human population, the demand for products from
water environment especially from sea also increases. This
condition makes some people do illegal fishing and market the
products with low-cost. Illegal fishing surely damages to water
environment because people do fishing without following the
procedure. They do fishing with such terrible ways such as using
dynamite or electric tools and do fishing in non-fishing zone or
closed

seasons.

With

Ecolabel,

the

products

from

water

environment can be controlled based on fishing procedures or

rules where the fishermen or companies operate. If the products
are suitable with the procedure, they can get Ecolabel or
certificate. Ecolabel ensures that illegal fish cannot enter the
supply chain.
In conclusion, Ecolabel is not just a label, but it can save
our environment because it can help us to prevent some
environmental problems like illegal logging, pollution, and illegal
fishing. People have to be more concerned about protecting the
environment, with Ecolabel people can make sure that

they

consume the environmentally- products and also push many

companies to be more disciplined and to be

more concerned

about our environment.
