Course Description: An intensive course in oral and written French for students with limited or no knowledge
of French (who do not have 3 U/M or 4U/M French or its equivalent). This course relies on textual as well as
on audiovisual and electronic support material. Not credited toward French major requirements. Excludes
FREN 1000Y (100). Students judged by the instructor to be fluent in French may not receive credit for this
course.

Learning objectives:
1. Depth and breadth of knowledge: general knowledge and understanding of French grammar and vocabulary; the ability to
use French outside the class.
2. Communication skills: the ability to communicate orally and in writing in French.
3. Awareness of limits to knowledge: an understanding of the limits of their ability to express themselves in French.

4. Autonomy and professional capacity: students will be able to use French in their studies, employment, community
involvement and other activities.

Notes :

Tests : short in-class tests on the subjects studied in each Dossier. Test 4 is on both Dossiers 4 & 5.
Projets : prepared at home, to be handed in after Dossiers 1 to 4. Subjects will be given in class.
Participation : attendance & evaluation of in-class contributions.
Cahier dexercices : for training, correction given in class to answer students questions (see Detailed Program below).

during class. The use of internet is not allowed in class. Cellphones must be turned off during classes.
