Welcome to FRENCH 311Communicative

Competence: Speaking and Listening

Course Description:

French 311 is an upper division French course for

students who have credit for French 202 or have
placed into the course by examination. Please
consult with the instructor if you have questions
regarding placement.

The principal goals are to increase linguistic

proficiency in French by means of practice of the
skills that comprise well-rounded communication.
We will be working on four traditional skills of
listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and
writing. Students are encouraged to develop
critical thinking through language
learning. Because language practice is closely tied
to cultural understanding, we will use authentic
texts in contexts that foster linguistic competence
while highlighting the diverse cultures of the French
and Francophone world. All four skills (reading,
listening, speaking, and writing) will be practiced
with more emphasize on speaking and listening.
Students are entirely responsible for all
assignments. These must be prepared before
every class session. This applies to the vocabulary,
grammar, readings in the book as well as the online
homework via MindTap.

Course materials:

Students are to bring their hard copy of Sur le vif,.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the book. Read
the preface to students carefully and look
through the entire book before the second-
class meeting in order to understand how the
chapters are organized.

Material required for class:

1. Tufts, Claire and Hannelore Jarausch. Sur le vif:

Niveau intermédiaire (7th edition) with a
MindTap course
2. I strongly recommend that each student
purchase a three-ring binder for the class,
divided into the following four sections:

Vocabulaire
2 Grammaire
3 Lecture

Course Objectives:

With sincere efforts, you can expect to achieve

greater competency in French.

Upon completion of this course,

Student proficiency (performance in the

language) should fall within the Intermediate
low to Intermediate-mid levels in listening and
speaking as measured according to the scale
provided by ACTFL (American Council on the
Teaching of Foreign Languages), through an
OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview).

https://www.actfl.org/publications/guidelines-and-
manuals/actfl-proficiency-guidelines-2012/french

Students should demonstrate effective listening

techniques, through study of topics

such as word groups and breath groups, and

linking and liaison, that enable him or her to
comprehend increasingly rapid speech on a
variety of subjects in a variety of contexts during
listening assessments based on authentic
language.

Students should demonstrate pronunciation and

intonation that are near-native

through speaking exercises such as keeping an

oral diary, recitations, and daily

conversations.

2.4. Students should demonstrate

conversational techniques for initiating,
maintaining,

and closing a conversation on subjects appropriate

to the levels identified for this

course through daily practice and periodic formal

assessments.

2.5. Students should demonstrate the ability to

perform specific communicative tasks

appropriate to their level such as reacting to

information; asking for clarification and

or additional information; asking for favors,

information, advice, and or help; making

and adjusting plans; expressing emotions and

opinions; telling stories; talking about

music, film, and literature on a basic level; and

discussing basic items in the news

through daily practice and assessments.

To achieve these goals, class attendance and

participation are very important. Therefore,
irregular attendance and/or lack of preparation
or participation will result in a lower grade.

To maximize your learning and success in

FR311, keep the following in mind:

Speak French in class! This course will be

conducted exclusively in French, and you will be
expected to speak French at all times during class.
If you are confused or lost, I encourage you to ask
questions in French, using simple phrases and
questions, such as: “Excusez-moi, je ne comprends
pas”; “Pourriez-vous répéter s’il vous plaît”,
“Comment dit-on….?”, “Est-ce que vous pouvez
expliquer….”. Don’t be afraid to speak up in
class!!! Don’t expect to understand absolutely
everything you hear from the outset; pay close
attention, get the gist of what is going on, ask for
clarifications and in little time you will be following
easily.

Final Grade at a glance:

Oral Performance (70%)

1. Attendance, preparation, participation, including
quality of oral expression in French: 15%
2. Chapter Videos and presentations (40%)
3. Immerse Me 15%
Written Performance (30%)
1. MindTap:10%
2. Interrogation & Rédactions 20%

Oral performance (70%)

1. Attendance and participation, including

quality of oral expression in French: 15%\

A major component to learning a language is the

ability to communicate in the language (speaking,
listening, and responding appropriately), thus the
“Conversation” in the course title. In addition, the
ONLY way to improve your oral skills in a language
is to actively use the language. It is therefore
imperative that you attend class. You are allowed 3
“free” absences – USE THEM WISELY. More than
3 absences will affect your attendance
/participation grade: if you are not in class,
obviously, you cannot participate. Therefore, your
participation grade can be no higher than the
percentage of classes you attend. Any point
deductions for non-participation will be taken
beginning with this percentage as a base. AT THE
SAME TIME, YOU MUST COME TO CLASS
PREPARED AND ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN
GROUP WORK, DISCUSSIONS AND ALL
OTHER ORAL WORK. The instructor expects
that all students participate actively in class.

To receive full participation credit, you must attend

class, be prepared, and actively / willingly
participate in ALL class activities. If you are unable
to offer any answer at all the questions you were to
have prepared in advance, you are not prepared.

Be systematic and thorough in your preparation

of assignments outside of class.
- Begin by familiarizing yourself with the overall
theme of the chapter you are preparing, writing
down the new vocabulary you are to memorize. File
these lists in your binder.

- Check weekly assignment in Canvas (A compléter

cette semaine ), do your reading and complete your
exercises before you come to class .
- Write out the answers to comprehension
questions for all Lectures 1 & 2 and file these in
your binder. -Your oral performance in class gives
me an indication of how well you have prepared,
and you will receive a daily participation grade.
- The better you prepare reading assignments,
the more progress you will make not only in
your overall comprehension but also in your
ability to express yourself in writing throughout
the semester.

Leave your English at the door! IN CLASS, YOU

WILL BE REQUIRED TO SPEAK IN FRENCH. IF
YOU FINISH A GROUP EXERCISE EARLY, FEEL
FREE TO CHAT WITH YOUR PARTNER - BUT
DO IT IN FRENCH! You will be graded on your
attempts to consistently use French in class

IMPORTANT NOTE: I do not expect perfection at

this level – if you can use the language perfectly
already you should NOT be in this class - but I DO
expect you to try to use the language in class. It is
FAR better to make an error in class, among others
learning the language along with you, than to make
it in a French-speaking country where it may inhibit
others ‘comprehension and / or make you feel
foolish or embarrassed. Everyone makes mistakes
when learning a language, we even “misspeak” in
our native language - so throw away your
inhibitions and talk, talk, talk!

Daily class participation graded as follows:

A (90-100) : The student prepared for class; spoke

up easily and willingly; contributed ideas and
opinions; showed mastery of the material, asked
questions, brought the textbook; participated well in
small group work; spoke French to classmates;
was on time.

B (80-89) : The student was moderately well

prepared; tried when called on but gave
inconsistent results

C (70-79) : The student did not bring the textbook;

spoke only when spoken to, listened passively;
used English; contributed little to group
discussions/work.

D (60-69) : The student was working at the minimal

basic level; did not participate ; had a disinterested
attitude in class.

2- Chapter Videos and presentations (40%)

There will be 8 short videos and 2 presentations

to be prepared throughout the semester. More
details will be given in a due time (For more
details, check your weekly calendar on
Canvas).

3- ImmerseMe (15%)

Welcome to ImmerseMe!

This French course will use the Virtual Reality

experience of ImmerseMe as part of the ODU CLT
Faculty Innovator Grant 2022. This project aligns
the curricular concepts and themes discussed in
class with the authentic situations presented using
the virtual reality of ImmerseMe for use outside of
class. The project will motivate you to analyze,
evaluate, and apply practical everyday concepts in
a real-world situation.

Beginning week three, this course will use the

Virtual Reality experience of ImmerseMe as part of
a 2022-2023 Grant-Funded research project. This
project will align the curricular concepts and
themes discussed in class with the authentic
situations presented using the virtual reality of
ImmerseMe for use outside of class. The project
will motivate you to analyze, evaluate, and apply
practical everyday concepts in a real-world
situation. Listen to the LLChat Podcast series,
Virtual Reality & ImmerseMe for World Languages
and Cultures , to learn more.

Using the four scaffolded learning modes of the

ImmerseMe platform (pronunciation, writing,
translation, and immersion), you will fully engage
with real-life scenarios where you will be prompted
to interact and negotiate meaning. The platform’s
game-based points will provide immediate
feedback and an incentive to advance to the next
learning mode

To fully appreciate ImmerseMe’s real-world

applications and gaming features to recall,
practice, and master (Wallinger, 2000) the target
language, an in-depth reflection will prompt you to
recognize the multicultural learning experience.

A Student Survey will be administered at the end of

the course for your feedback on using VR for world
language learning.

1. Written performance (30%)

1. MindTap (10%)

Follow our online class syllabus carefully for

assignments. Before each class (unless otherwise
indicated on the syllabus), you will have to go
online and submit the assigned MindTap
exercises through the Cengage website.

- As you will see on the weekly calendar in the

MindTap course, I have selected activities that will
help you to learn, practice, apply and understand --
the vocabulary, grammatical structures and various
readings included in our text Sur le vif.

-You will notice that the number of activities

assigned for each class varies. Please focus not
on the quantity but rather on the type of activity you
are assigned. Study the material first in your book,
and take some notes (that will also help you
review for quizzes and exams) before attempting
the activity online.

-You will see that activities are due by11:50 pm

(after the class session the same day) on the
day for which they are assigned. A zero will be
assigned to an activity that is submitted late.

2. Interrogations & Rédactions 20%

2.1 Short quizzes (Interrogations) (10%)

You will often have either a short quiz on verb

conjugation, vocabulary, or a brief “dictée”
(dictation) in class. These short quizzes will be
both announced and unannounced. (For more
details, check your weekly calendar on
Canvas).

2.2. Tow writing assignments,

“Rédaction” (10%)

These must be typed, with accents, double spaced,

spell checked, and handed in at the start of class
on the date they appear on the syllabus. (For more
details, check your weekly calendar on
Canvas).

Late work policy: Late work, assignments, and

submissions

Because the class period is important and

discussions cannot be reproduced, absences
cannot be made up. Excessive absences (exhibited
by lack of participation in required discussions) can
have a negative effect on the student's learning and
performance. A student who must miss a class is
expected to have the initiative to cover properly the
materials missed. The student must meet all course
deadlines and be present for all assessments."
(ODU Catalog).

All assignments must be submitted as requested by

the instructor on time. No Exceptions. Do not
email your assignments.

NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.

9. Attendance policy

Attendance is mandatory. Regular attendance and

participation in class activities are essential to be a
successful language learner. In order to progress in
understanding and speaking French, you must hear
and speak it on a regular basis. Therefore, you
must prepare carefully for class by completing all
assignments in advance. You will be asked to
volunteer often and participate actively. Try to
speak French at all times, even during partner and
small group work. Concentrate on using the
vocabulary at hand to enrich your expression.
Students will be graded daily on class participation
and preparation.

It is the student's responsibility to be present in

class and to arrive on time daily. Arriving 15
minutes late to class will be considered as an
absence. University policy states that you must
attend 80% of classes to receive an Incomplete;
consequently, you must also attend 80% of classes
to receive a grade. After your sixth absence,
including any illness, documented or
undocumented, your final grade will be lowered one
notch, e.g. from B to B- to C+ to C to C-, etc., for
each subsequent class missed. Please consider
the university policy on withdrawal before and after
deadline, if necessary.

Honor Code:

By attending Old Dominion University, you have

accepted the responsibility to abide by this code.
This is an institutional policy approved by the Board
of Visitors. The Honor System at Old Dominion
University is based on individual integrity. This
system assumes that every student will accept his
or her role in the University community with a
feeling of self-respect and duty. Lying, cheating,

and plagiarism all constitute violations of the Honor

System. Each piece of work submitted by you, such
as homework and term papers, must be your own
work.

As a member of our community of scholars at Old

Dominion University, you are expected to adhere to
the above pledge.

"I pledge to support the honor system of Old

Dominion University. I will refrain from any
form of academic dishonesty or deception,
such as cheating or plagiarism. I am aware that
as a member of the academic community, it is
my responsibility to turn in all suspected
violators of the honor system. I will report to
Honor Council hearings if summoned."

Every attempt is made to provide a syllabus that is

complete and that provides an accurate overview of
the courses. However, circumstances and events
may make it necessary for the instructor to modify
the syllabus during the semester. This may depend,
in part, on the progress, needs, and experiences of
the students.

About 2 weeks before the end of classes, you will

receive an e-mail asking you to complete course
evaluations online. These evaluations are strictly
confidential and are given to the instructor after
grades have been recorded. Please complete the
evaluations in a timely manner.

http://www.odu.edu/oduhome/course_eval.shtml

Cell phones should be turned OFF (NOT on

vibrate or silent). There should be no texting during
class. Your instructor reserves the right to mark you
absent if you are texting in class.

The use of any online translators is strictly

forbidden and use of such apps will be considered
plagiarism and be treated as such, according to
university policy. Submitting work obtained from
online translators is NOT submitting your own
authentic original work and is an honor code
violation.

Assignments submitted late, after the deadline,

(without written permission [via email] from the
instructor) will NOT be accepted for a grade

The sharing of files/assignments is not acceptable

and subject to honor code violations.

All assignments, due dates, and communications

will regularly be posted on Canvas. All information
concerning assignments, deadlines and
instructions will be available on Canvas. Not being
aware of this information is not an excuse for late
or incorrect work. Students are expected to check
Canvas (announcements) and email daily for
updates from the instructor for postings related to
lessons.

Failure to keep up with Canvas postings and email

may result in the student missing valuable info for
assignments, deadlines for submission, and lower
grades for a semester course.

Instructors will make every attempt to keep all

assignments and required homework in digital
format, no hard copies to be submitted, in
accordance to the universities' policy of 'going
green.' This will assist the student in saving in
printer and paper costs.

ALL assignments will be submitted through

Canvas/ MindTap , No email assignments will be
accepted. NO EXCEPTIONS!

The Old Dominion University e-mail system is the

official electronic mail system for distributing
course-related communications, policies,
announcements, and other information for this
class and the university in general.

Respect the instructor by addressing her

professionally in e-mail correspondence:
/Mrs/Dr./Professor - not "hey, you!"
