Strategies to read

 Reading short texts and paragraph at the beginner stage.

 Be realistic(set realistic goals which is achievable, unless it becomes a habit)
about how much you can handle, begin with short article on website or
newspaper.
 Active reading vs Passive Reading

12
13

Active Reader Vs Passive Reader

Thought process is involved in reading meaning what you are reading any
chapter or subject you are understanding it completely.
Passive reading is like only reading assignment example teacher has given:-
Book, articles, essays, reports for submission and students not applying the
intellectual quotient simply they are submitting for course fulfilment purpose.
Tips to be an active reader
1.Preview to look before you read an article, look through it
a. Look at the title, quickly read the introduction(short little introduction)
b. Skim through and look for sectional headings, sub headings in entire article
at one go
c. Look for pictures, charts, bar graphs, pie charts
d. And anything written in bold letters (keywords used by author of the
passage are written in bold letters)

13
14

…..Previewing or pre reading should be for 2 minutes after previewing start

asking questions to yourself
What do you think this article is about?
What first hand information you are gaining through preview?
Now read the entire article again with proper time (as per your comprehension
speed) and answer your own questions which you raised after previewing.
Write down any other question you might be thinking after finishing the article
it will help you cracking RC questions asked in assessment test of job
placement like AMCAT,COCUBES,WIPRO,TCS online test.

How to use context in deriving the meaning of the new words

(Vocabulary)Contextual Reading
Interacting or engaging with texts, traps in reading the article that you should be
careful.
New vocabulary You can encounter many new words that you are not familiar
with ;don’t stop at every new word while reading the article(please don’t pick
dictionary every time for deriving the meaning of the word->In solving RC
passages vocabulary question in online assessment you wont be having any
help) instead use context to understand the meaning of new word.
Looking up to dictionary would slow you up and you will miss out on context of
the sentences and paragraphs.

15
16

Use context meaning the information before and after the word to help you
grasp the meaning (How the word is used in the sentence)
Keep reading the article don’t stop in between because the next sentence may
also help you to understand the meaning of new word.
Context clues(hints in the sentences to understand the meaning of
word)”such as", "for instance", "especially”
Definitions and synonyms(check in entire paragraph) sometimes they help us to
derive the meaning of the new word.
Contrast  use of contrast in the article like comparing any situation what was
earlier to what it is now

16
17

Enough of strategies now practice time solving of exercises(vocabulary and

RC Passage) via offline mode to begin with then we will move to online mode.
