Personal Traits and Competencies of Computer Programmer

Introduction

In a world that’s blossoming with innovation rooted in technology, nearly


every company has implemented computer programs in some form to help
streamline their business. And behind every computer application and
software program, there is a computer programmer who writes and tests the
code to ensure they function properly.

This is an appealing profession for many tech-minded folks, but


programming languages can seem pretty intimidating to the uninitiated. But
in reality, is computer programming hard?

There’s no reason to assume learning to program will be a cakewalk—it


will definitely take a lot of time and effort to get there. That said, a computer
programming career does come a bit easier for people with the right traits and
characteristics. We connected with programming pros already in the field to
identify the top characteristics employers are looking for.

The following are the essential personal traits of a computer
programmer.

1. Passionate

 Having desire this innate and passion to drive


them to solve problems
 is the intense enthusiasm and excitement for
what you do. It can be the difference between
doing it and getting done well.

2. Adaptable

 Means how easily someone can adjust to change


or new situations. Highly adaptable people can
easily switch from one activity or location to
another, without any problems. 

3. Inquisitive

 being open to exploring new ideas when a


question is asked.

4. Patient

 is a person's ability to wait something out or


endure something tedious, without getting
riled up

5. Detail-oriented

 Someone who pays attention to the details and


can make a conscious effort to understand
causes instead of just the effects, and that
does this in a second nature type of way.

6. Creative

 Programmers are a great example of


thinking outside the box because, well…
programmers can actually create the box.

7. Team Player
 someone who actively contributes to their
group in order to complete tasks, meet
goals or manage projects

8. Committed
 Shows dedication by giving and showing
best efforts in doing what is needed and
what is best for the company in terms of
creating computer programs.

9. Resourceful
 having the ability to find quick and clever
ways to overcome difficulties.

10. Focused

 Gives full attention to accomplishing the


task and does not do anything that is not
connected with his work

1. Technical Expertise
 Extensive knowledge in programming language and is able
to write computer programs
2. Debugging skills
 Able to identify and fix bugs
3. Problem solving skills
 Excellent analytical and logical skills in identifying
weakness, strengths and effective solutions to problems
4. Communication skills
 Ability to communicate ideas and other information
presented through spoken and written words

Computer programmers need to have a wide range of skills in


order to perform the many responsibilities of the position at the
highest level of professionalism. The most effective programmers
combine knowledge, aptitude and technical capability with soft skills
such as the ability to work as part of a team and to communicate well
with others. Aspiring computer programmers need to be able to
demonstrate both types of skills.
