modifies the verb ran].
b) She answered my question in a very rude manner.[The underlined adverbial phrase

GMAT, in order to correct a modifying error, sometimes changes an adjectival modifier
into an adverbial modifier. Such a change not only corrects the error but also shifts the
focus of the modifier from a noun [adjectival modifier] to a verb [adverbial modifier].
a) Coming out of the departmental store, Johns wallet was stolen.
The error lies in the non-underlined part. It was John and not his wallet that was coming
out of the departmental store. Since we need to correct the underlined portion, the best
that we can do is to change this participle adjective modifier into an adverbial modifier.
b) As John came out of the departmental store, Johns wallet was stolen.
Thus we have introduced an adverbial clause with the help of the subordinating
conjunction as.
