1. (a) Explain Ohm’s law, KCL and KVL and their basis with suitable examples.
(b) Find the equivalent resistance existing between terminals a and b shown in
the figure 1b. [8+8]

2. (a) A series R C circuit is excited by sinusoidal voltageI = Im sin wt. Find the
expression for impedance using phasor diagram.
(b) A voltage ν(t) = 10 sin ωt is applied to the series RLC circuit. At the resonant
frequency of the circuit, the maximum voltage across the capacitor is found
to be 500V. Moreover, the bandwidth is known to be 400rad/sec, and the
impedance at resonance is 100Ω. Find the resonant frequency. Also find the
values of L and C of the circuit. [4+12]
3. (a) Derive the e .m .f equation of a dc . Generator for both wave - wand and
lepwand generators?
(b) An 6 pole generator armature with 300 conductors is running a speed of 1500
r.p.m find the e .m .f generated when flux per pole is 0.06wb? In both lepwand
& wave wand? [16]

7. (a) Compare salient pole and non salient pole type Synchronous machines
(b) The stator of a 3-phase, 16-pole Alternator has 144 slots and there are 4
conductors per slot connected in two layers and the conductors of each phase
are connected in series. If the speed of the Alternator is 375 rpm, calculate
the emf inducted per phase. Resultant flux in the air-gap is 0.05 webers per
pole sinusoidally distributed. Assume the coil span as 150 degrees electrical.

6. (a) State the effects of increasing rotor resistance on starting current, starting
torque, maximum torque and full-load slip of an induction motor?
(b) A 100KW, 3-Φ, 420V, 6-pole,50Hz wound rotor Induction motor, with its
rotor winding short circuited, has a full-load slip of 0.04 and slip at maximum
torque of 0.2 when operating at rated voltage and frequency.Find
i. maximum torque
ii. starting torque. If rotor resistance is doubled by adding external series
resistance. Determine
iii. slip at full-load output
iv. full-load torque
v. slip at maximum torque. [6+10]

1. (a) Define self and mutual inductances. Establish the polarity of two mutually
coupled coils on a single magnetic core.
(b) Find the voltage needed across terminals a-b shown in the figure1b so that
the drop across the 10Ω resistor is 30V. Also find the corresponding voltage
drop across the 5Ω resistor. [8+8]

2. The power consumed in the inductive load shown in the figure2 is 2.5 kW at 0.71
lagging power factor (pf). The input voltage is 230 V, 50 Hz. Find the value of
the capacitor C, such that the resultant power factor of the input current is 0.866
lagging. [16]

negligible stator impedence and no load current, determine the starting torque
when the rotor circuit resistance per phase is
i. doubled

7. (a) Deduce the relation between the number of poles, the frequency, and the speed
of the alternator
(b) State the advantages and disadvantages of using short pitched and distributed
windings in alternators
(c) The effective resistance of a 200V, 50Hz , 440 KVA, 1-phase, alternator is
0.5ohm. On short circuit, a field current of 40 A gives the full load current of
200 a. The electromotive force on open-circuits with same field excitation is
1160V. Calculate the synchronous impedance and reactance. [5+6+5]
8. (a) Give a summary of four different types of voltmeters commonly used in prac-
tice state whether they can be used for AC or DC circuits. In one case ,give
a sketch showing the construction. With the method of control and damping
employed.
(b) Distinguish between the PMMC & MI instruments. [8+8]

From the above tests calculate the efficiency and regulation for full load at 0.8 p.f
lagging.
