displayedthroughthecharacters.Lightanddarknessispresentedinalmosteveryscene,whether
isissomethingasinconsiderableasLadyCapuletaskingforlight,orasconsiderableasRomeo
literallycomparingJuliettothelightandstarsinthenightsky.Lightanddarknessisalso
extremelyliteralin
RomeoandJuliet.
RomeocanonlyseeJulietatnight,andinthetragic
endingofthebook,bothcharactersdieatnight.Lightanddarknessisoneof
RomeoandJuliet

greatestmotifs,andsomemaysaythatJulietrepresentslight,whileRomeorepresentsnotonly
light,butdarknessaswell,andthroughthis,bothloversoutshinethedarkness.Thisis
representedwhenShakespearecomparesRomeotothestars,whenRomeoandJulietcanonly
meetatnight,andfinally,whenShakespearesuggeststhatJulietissobright,thatshewouldput
thestarstoshame.

Inactthreeofthetragedy,ShakespearecomparesRomeotothestars.RomeoandJuliet
obviouslyloveeachother,eventhroughhardtimes.Justbeforeherlovingnursewalksintotell
JulietofthebadnewsinregardtoRomeo,Julietbegantalkingoutloudabouthertrueloveto
Romeo.Julietstatedthatwhen[she]shalldie,take[Romeo]andcuthimoutinlittlestars,and
hewillmakethefaceofheavensofine,thatalltheworldwillbeinlovewithnight,andpayno
worshiptothegarishsun(3.2.2327).ThisquotesuggeststhatRomeoisamassoflightthathas
thepotentialtobecutintogleamingstars,butevenstarshaveanexpirationdate.Whenastar
diesout,itvanishesforever,andallthatisleftisgasandremnants,whichrepresentsthetalethat
bothfamiliescantell,andthestatuesthatwerebroughtupinmemoriumtoRomeoandJuliet.
Thisquotealsomentionsthatthewholeworldwilllovethedarkness,whichsuggeststhatRomeo
isdarknessaswellaslight.
AnotherfactoristhatRomeoandJulietcanonlymeetatnight.WhenRomeofirstmeets
Juliet,itisatamasqueradeparty,whichtakesplaceatnight.TheythenmeetlaterinJuliets
gardenatnight,andevenlater,onthenightoftheirhoneymoon,whereRomeostatesmorelight
andlight:moredarkanddarkourwoes(3.5.36),suggestingthattheonlytimethattheloverscan
seeeachotherisatnight.Thisbringsupthetopicofwhatisconsideredtobebetter.Whetheris
islightofdarkness,noreaderscantell.RomeoandJulietareconsideredstars,yettheyonlysee

twoloversreuniting,onewouldsaythatbothofthemareacombinationoflightanddarkness.
ShakespearesuggestingthatJulietwouldputshametothestarsalsohasabigimpacton
theroleoflightanddarknessin
RomeoandJuliet.
Lightismentionedmanytimesthroughoutthe
drama,butthemostsignificanttimeiswhenRomeostatesthatthebrightnessof[Juliets]cheek
wouldshamethosestars(22.1920).ThiseasilysuggeststhatJulietwouldoutshinethestars,
whichpreviouslymentioned,willeventuallydieout.Thelongerastarburns,thelongeritlives,
andthisquoterepresentsthatcompletely.ThisisrepresentedwhenJulietlivesminutesoreven
secondslongerthanRomeo.WhenRomeodies,Julietisdevastated,andkillsherself,outshining
Romeobyahair.
Shakespearerepresentslightanddarknessthroughcharacterdevelopmentincluding
whenShakespearecomparesRomeotothestar,whenRomeoandJulietmeetatnight,andwhen
hestatesthatJulietwouldoutshinethestars.JulietisobviouslyveryfondofRomeo,andinthe
play,shecompareshimdirectlytothestars,becauseheshinesbrightandeventuallydiesout,but
earlierinthedramathereisacontradictingstatement.RomeosaysthatJulietoutshinesthestars,
andputsthemtoshame,whichdirectlycorrelatestotheloversrelationship,becauseRomeois
thestars,andJulietoutshinesthem,butevenstillthereisacontradictingstatement.Julietherself

isalsocomparedtothestars.ThisrepresentsthatJulietoutshinesherself,representingher
suicideandthelastingeffectontheMontaguesandCapulets.FinallythefactthatRomeoand
Julietcanonlymeetatnighttiesintothefactthattheyoutshineeverythingaroundthem,and
leaveafootprint,whichinthiscaseisthetheirowntragicdeaths.
