Dear Faithful Supporters and fnends:

May grace and peace be with you! We hope this letter finds everyone doing

well and enjoying the summer. We are enjoying our 85 winter.

Portage, MI 49002

We were excited to find out before we leftthe United States that three of us

instead oftwo were coming to Brazil. The newest member ofthe Haubner family
will be arriving in late October.

We arrived safely in Brazil on April 6 and we are getting situated inour home.
We were excited to find the church at Novo Horizonte getting closer to

construction. A new building is a necessity for growth atthis church. The church has
been running over capacity every Sunday night with an average attendance of400.
Michael had the privilege ofbaptizing twenty-five people into Christ inMay.
The Adult Sunday School class at theNovo Horizonte church has begun a

project where they feed forty street kids every Saturday aftemoon. They also have a
time of singing and Bible stories.

It is exciting to see the continued interest inministry and development of

leaders in the churches. This is evident by the eighty students that are enrolled in the
Bible Institute at the Vila Boa Church. In addition to this, leadership retreats are

being held atthe camp in Goianira. These students will beused as leaders inthe
future to attain our goal of establishing twenty churches and 10,000 Christians bythe
year 2000.

Brazil is once again in an attempt to better hereconomic situation where hyper

inflation has been a problem for many years. InJuly the monetary system will change

again and a new plan will be implemented to lower inflation. The inflation rate last
month rose to over 45%. Between 1980 and 1993, accumulated inflation in Brazil

reached the figure of 146 billion, 219 million, 946 thousand, 300 percent!
Please remember to keep Brazilian leaders and Brazil in your prayers. Again
wewould like to thank you foryour faithful partnership \vith Michiana-Brazil
Christian Mission.

In Him,

%cchail

Dear Friends and Supporters of Michiana-Brazil Christian Mission:

Eugene Thomas

We greet you from Brazil, no longer the land of tropical sun, but the land
of cold and frost! As you experience summer temperatures, we are

experiencing our winter weather. Our winter is usually very mild, but this
year we have had temperatures as low as 3 degrees Celsius. The southern
part of Brazil has had snow and frost and has lost at least one-third of their
coffee crop. This weather has been a real hardship for the people of our
region of Brazil, as they are not prepared or accustomed to this type of
cold weather. Many of the very poor live in tents made of plastic and have
only one blanket to divide between their entire family. We are indeed
blessed.

The construction of the Novo Horizonte Church is well underway. We are

still able to have our weekly services and Sunday school in the existing
building for the time being. The future building will take up three of the
four lots that the church owns. The existing building is on one lot and is
now surrounded by concrete beams and steel wires on the outside and
other support structure on the inside. We plan to meet in that building
until walls and a roof can be put on the new building, at which time we
will destroy the existing building. The Sunday school rooms are all on the
fourth lot, and as of now we only have four rooms. Some of the Sunday
school classes are meeting in houses of members that live close to the
church. Despite this, the congregation is excited to see that construction
has actually started. Please keep the construction of the Novo Horizonte
Church in your prayers, that God will provide funds to complete the
building.

Our work with the young people is going very well. We baptized six
teenagers into Christ in July, and have had ten more decisions for Christ.
Our youth meetings have been averaging sixty to seventy young people.
The youth are taking advantage of their one month holiday in July by
participating in church camp in Goianira. We expect seventy to onehundred junior highers to attend.

Lives are being changed through our small-group ministry! We currently

have eight couples from the Novo Horizonte congregation, five coupleS
from the Vila Boa congregation, and four couples from the Jardim
Planallo congregation that arc participating. Our goal is to work with these
couples this year, who will in turn start their own small groups the
following year. Please be in prayer for this powerful ministry.
As always, we would like to thank you for your support of the MichianaBrazil Christian Mission. Please continue to keep our ministry in your
daily prayers and in the prayers of your church.
In Christ,

Michael and Debbie Haubner
