1. A new company with just two employees, Sanchez and Patel, rents a floor of a
building with 12 offices. How many ways are there to assign different offices
to these two employees?

2. The chairs of an auditorium are to be labeled with an uppercase English letter

followed by a positive integer not exceeding 100. What is the largest number
of chairs that can be labeled differently?

3. How many bit strings of length 7 are there?

4. Suppose that either a member of the computer science faculty or a student
who is a computer science major is chosen as a representative to a university
committee. How many different choices are there for this representative if
there are 39 members of the math faculty and 89 computer science majors of
which 2 computer science majors are members of the faculty?

5. How many license plates can be made using either three uppercase English
letters followed by three digits or four uppercase English letters followed by
two digits?

6. How many ways are there to select a first prize winner, a second prize winner
and a third prize winner from 100 different people who have entered a
contest?

7. Suppose a saleswoman has to visit 8 different cities. She must begin her trip
in a specified city, but she can visit the other seven cities in any order she

these cities?

8. Suppose there are 8 runners in a race. The winner receives a gold medal, the
second place finisher receives a silver medal and the third place winner
receives a bronze medal. How many different ways are there to award these
medals, if all possible outcomes of the race can occur and there are no ties?

9. How many permutations of the letters ABCDEFG contain the string AB?

10.How many different committees of three students can be formed from a

group of four students?

11.In how many ways are there to select five players from a 10- member tennis
team to make a trip to a match at another school?

12.Suppose that a department contains 10 men and 15 women. How many

ways are there to form a committee with six members if it must have the
same number of men and women?

13.A certain lottery consists of selecting 5 numbers (any order) from a set of 40
numbers.
a) How many different sets of 5 numbers can be selected from a set of 40
numbers?

c) What is the probability that the ball chosen is red or yellow?

17.An urn contains four blue balls , five red balls and one yellow ball. Two balls
are selected with replacement from the urn. Find the probabilities:
a) Probability that both balls are blue?

b) Probability that exactly one ball is red? (Hint: there are two possibilities here)

c) Probability that both balls are yellow?

18.Two dice are rolled.

a) How many possible outcomes are there for the sum of the number of points
on the top faces of the two die?

b) When playing craps, you win if the sum of the points on the die is seven or
eleven. What is the probability that a player will win on one roll of the two
die?
c) When playing craps, a player loses if on the first roll the sum is 2, 3 or 12.
What is the probability that a player will lose on the first roll?

19.A certain code consists of 7 characters. The first character must be a 0 or a 1.

The next character must be a letter of the alphabet. The remaining 5
characters must be a digit from 0 to 9 with repetition allowed of the digit.
