As we know in every company, either small or big company and in every country,

there is always a leader to lead them to be a success and the strong one. By having a
leader, the work will still on the track, because the leader controls the work. The success
of a company or a country is depending on the leader, the leader ability, the thinking way,
the leader personality. There are many Presidents in Indonesia, and we can see under
whose authority Indonesia getting better and got worse. The first president of Indonesia is
Soekarno, the second is Suharto, Habibie, Abdurrahman Wahid, Hamzah Haz, Megawati,
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. And for me the ideal leader is Abdurrahman Wahid and he
is a Democratic Leader. He is a open-minded man, democratic leader, active and hard
working man. He never discriminate people. Because of him we as a Chinese can learn
mandarin, the discrimination on Chinese is getting decrease.we are more secure, and also
easier for us to get a job already or doing business.The anti between Christian and
Muslim getting decrease too. He is the first democratic leader in Indonesia then followed
by the fifth, and the sixth President. Because of him we as the citizens have a right to
speak up what we want and Indonesia economy getting better at that time since he
became the President and also more develop.

Abdurrahman Wahid was born on 4th August 1940 in Jombang, East java. He has five
siblings and he is the eldest. He was born into a very well- respected family in the East
Java Muslim community. He is a clever and diligent students. While he was still primary
school,Wahid has liked to read a non-Muslim book, magazines and newspaper and his
hobby is playing football.He was a scholar. He received a scholarship from The Ministry
of Religious Affair to Cairo, Egypt in 1963.(Wikipedia,2007)He was the forth President
of Indonesia. He sat for 3 years from 20th October 1999 until 23rd July 2001. Before he
became Indonesias President, he join the Institute for Economic and Social Research,
Education and Information (LP3ES) which this organization worked on consisted of
intellectuals with progressive Muslims and social-democratic views; then he worked as a
journalist writing for magazine Tempo and Kompas newspaper; then his articles were
well-received and since that time he became popular. He became a social comentrator and
also he was offer to give lecture and seminar. Although he has been so busy with his
work, but he still didnt think so that his earning was enough for the family and to help
his wife small business then we sold peanut for the extra income .(Wikipedia,2007) and
then he became the Chairman in NU,Nahdlatul Ulama, the worlds largest Muslim
Organization which was pioneered by his grandfather. Then in 1999 he became the forth
President of Indonesia.
Abdurrahman Wahid is an Democratic leader. The decision that he made was
shared between the leader and the group. He guides and encourages the group and
citizens to spoke up what they want to say. He gave a right for the citizens, for the
subordinate to talk. We can see from one case : While he was travelling to Europe on
february, he asked a resignation of Wiranto but while he came back from Europe, Wiranto

try to talk with him and he success convinced Wahid. And he was not replaced at that
time.(Wikipedia,2007) He is brave and he was not scared to criticize people if there is
something not fair or bad thing that the people have done. He didnt scare to criticize the
previous rule of Soeharto. Soeharto is an autocratic leader and he was the second
President of Indonesia. There has been quite a long time already the conflict between
GAM and the Government and still cannot be solve by the previous Presidents, but under
his, the problem with GAM was solved. They negotiate and it took two months.After
GAM told him what they want and after they came to an agreement the government sign
a Memorandum of Understanding.
He used transformational leadership, by his charisma and his open minded, he
able to transfrom or to change ones mindset. He is an inspiration for many of Indonesias
citizens and because of him, most of us are motivated to work harder, because see
although he is blind but his desire (enthusiasm) is very high. Because of him the
discrimination on Chinese getting decrease and the Muslim thought about Christian, has
changed. NO discrimination. In addressing Muslim Audience, he always reminds them
that they must respect others' beliefs, and to avoid any form of discrimination or
fanaticism towards those who worship differently religion from themselves. He told the
Muslim that the reason why Christian needs to build many churches is because they are
divided into many part. So although if there are only five worshippers they still need a
church to pray, it is not same with Muslim. Although they are divided into 2 different
part, they still can pray in one mosque and also he told them that the Countrys
regulations permit and guarantee the building of churches. (libforall,2005) On 30th
December, Wahid visited Irian During his visit, he was successful in convincing West

Papuan leaders that he was a force for change and even encouraged the use of the name
Papua. (Wikipedia,2007). After he has been be Indonesias President he always defend
Non-Pribumi or Non-Muslim citizens and he fight for a rights for them.
What he has done to Indonesia are very worth it. While in his hand Indonesia
economy was getting better but after he was not a President of Indonesia already, the
Indonesia economy got worser. He is a ideal leader because beside he is a democratic
leader, who always open with all people and citizens, want to hear what the thought of
the citizens, encourage, guides people and he also a pure leader, he didnt think of him
selves, he didnt take advantage with his position.But unfortunately he must lost his
position. People slander him that he did a corruption, but actually he did not. What he has
done for Indonesia especially for the Non-Muslim and Non-Pribumi is very worth it and
we wont forget it. Until now although he is not the President of Indonesia already, but he
still defend on Non-Muslim and Non-Pribumi people. If there is any problem to them,
and they find him, hell defend them and help them.
