If A = m + ni and B = p + qi, find

1. A =

2. A = the number of distinct arrangements of the letters in YALE

B = the number of distinct arrangements of the letters in BULLDOG
C = the number of distinct arrangements of the letters in BOWWOW
D = the number of distinct arrangements of the letters in ELIHU
D
Compute B
C + A.
3. Each of the following statements has a value in parentheses next to it. Let T be the sum of the values
of the true statements and let F be the sum of the values of the false statements.
(2) If log(y) is directly proportional to log(x) then y is directly proportional to x.
(-1) If A is a square matrix with determinant 10, then it has an inverse matrix.
(3) f (x) = 2x is an odd function.
(5) A cubic polynomial with real coefficients has at least one real zero.
(4) If k and m are inversely proportional real numbers, then neither of them can ever be zero.
Find T F .
4. I enjoy eating pizza, but the more I eat, the more slowly I eat. Suppose I have a pizza. In the first
minute, I eat 31 of it, in the second minute I eat 14 (of the whole pizza, not of the remaining piece), and so
1
on (that is, until the pizzas gone, in the nth minute I eat n+2
of the pizza). How many minutes does it
take me to eat this pizza? (assume that during each minute, I eat at the same rate; for example, after 20
seconds Ill have eaten 19 of the pizza and after 30 seconds Ill have eaten a total of 16 of the pizza)
5. The Cavaliers and Spurs play a series of games against each other. The first team to win three games
wins the series. If the Cavaliers have a 23 probability of winning any given game (assume each game is
independent), what is the probability that theyll lose the series? (Hint: the series can take either 3, 4, or
5 games. Have different team members compute the probability for each of these.) Also, 33 = 27, 34 = 81,
and 35 = 243.
6. This question is in relay format. On your answer sheet, write down the value of D.
A is the product of the zeroes of the polynomial x3 + 2x2 + 4x + 6.
B is the point where the lines y = Ax + 37 and y = 13 Ax intersect.
C is the line passing through point B with slope 3.
D is the y-coordinate of the y-intercept of C.
7. I pick a random integer between 1 and 10 (inclusive) and you do the same. We then compare numbers.
Find the probability that my number is higher than yours.
8. A is the number of intersection points of f (x) = 2x and g(x) = x2 .
B is the sum of all real values of x that satisfy log2 (x + 1) + 2 log4 (x) = 3 log8 (3x)
C is the sum of all real values of y that satisfy 4y 2y+2 = 12.
Find AB + 2C .

9. I have 37 coins, which are all either nickels or dimes.

A is the number of nickels I have if my coins are worth $2.25.
B is the number of dimes I have if my coins are worth $3
C is the number of dimes I have if my coins are worth $2.65
D is the number of nickels I have if my coins are worth $2.40
Find A + B + C + D
10. Let [x] denote the greatest integer less than or equal to x.

If [ x] = 12 and [ y] = 8 then A is the greatest possible value of [x + y].

If [log2 (w)] = 6 and [log2 (z)] = 5 then B is the greatest possible value of [w + z].
What is A + B?

12. Consider a 3x3 grid of squares. Allen and Kevin take turns placing the letters X and O into any
empty square (Allen places X, Kevin places O), where Allen goes first. If one of them gets three in a row
(i.e. three Xs in a row/column/diagonal or three Os in a row/column/diagonal), they win and the game
immediately stops (even if all nine boxes arent filled). If both of them play perfectly (i.e. they never
mess up), whos going to win? (if neither player is going to win, write draw on your answer sheet)
Note: the game in question is basically tic-tac-toe.
13. Suppose we number the days in the year 1, 2, 3, ..., 365 (with 1 corresponding to January 1, 32 to
February 1, 365 to December 31, etc. Its not a leap year.). Im not a huge fan of cleanliness, so I only do
something hygienic every third day. Every ninth day I take a shower, and on the other hygiene days, I
brush my teeth. Let A be the number of times I brush my teeth during the year and let B be the number
of times I take a shower during the year. If my first shower is on January 9th, what is B
A?
14. A is the greatest prime factor of 410
B is the greatest prime factor of 420
C is the greatest prime factor of 430
D is the greatest prime factor of 440
Find the distance between the points (A, B) and (C, D).
15. The points (3, 3) (0, 6), and (2, 8) are on the parabola y = Ax2 + Bx + C. Find B A+C .
