WESSAGES FROM MARY AND BERT

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALLI This is a bit of late greeting, but heartfelt. As I have been reading
through, the Psalms, and reflecting back over the year, there are many verses that show the
Lord's working and guidance. I would like to share a few: "You are forgiving and good, 0
Lord, abounding in love to all who call on you. . . . In the day of ray trouble I will call to
you, for you will answer me. . . . Among the gods there is none like you, 0 Lord; no deeds can
compare with yours. . . . For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God. . . .
For great is your love toward me. . . . But you, 0 Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,

slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness."

Psalm 86

As I look back, this has been a year full of Joys and sorrows, excitement and fear, blessings
and times of discouragement; it has been a time of growing and learning to lean even more upon
the unchanging love of our Lord and His faithfulness to us. How we praise Him for all He has
done in our lives and the lives of our children this last year, and how His Word has been
working and spreading to those vho had not yet heard of Him. There certainly is no other God
that can compare with the true and living Jehovah God I "Diere are many who still worship idols
and spirits and the unknown, or those whose god is their riches, etc., but there is no god,
full of love and mercy, except our Lord!

FAMILY NEWS;

We have received 6 new children.

Leonardo turned 2 Just a few days after his

arrival. His mother had died a month before and the family is very poor.
and not able to walk alone. He still is not walking, but
is standing, and Just needs a little more confidence to
set out on his own. Dante was 3 weeks old when his grandmother brought him. He is now fat and healthy and full of
smiles and talk.

He was very thin,

He is an unwanted child bom from an-

other man, not the husband.

Just a few days ago we re-

ceived 4 siblings, from a family of 7*

The father is

dying of cancer and practically bedridden. The mother

has found work, but imast live out.

The two older child-

Jay, Just over 1 year. None of them have been in school
yet. Pray that we will be able to teach them the love
of our Lord in the time that we have them, which could.'

o'

We have also had 5 children leave our Home in these

last three months. Victor, 3 yrs., was able to go

home.

We pray that he will remember the Lord, and

V <

Jesus, of v^om he was taught. Our big boy, Michael, who

had been sent away one time before, and we decided to

take him back and help him, has again been sent home.
He was studying in high school (4th yr.) and doing well,

Dantefat
Daiitefat and Sassy {I

when all of a sudden he started skipping classes and misusing the money, and got with a bad

group. He had been warned against such behavior, but it was his choice. We were again sad to
have to send him out, but we find comfort in knowing that he knows the Lord and idiere to turn

for help vAien the world fails to meet his needs.

Harilcris and Jerald, two of a group of 6

brothers living here, went home at Christmas. Harikris, 13, asked to go home to be with his
father. The mother came and got him and decided to take Jerald, 5,
is not yet in school,
also. We pray that Harikris will continue to read his Bible and to follow Jesus. Ihe tempta
tions have been strong in his life, and living in the way of the Lord has not always been his
first choice. As he goes out and lives among the world we pray that he will not forget the
Lord. Our girl, JoAnn. one of our first children, married her boyfriend from the Seminary
during Christmas vacation. We pray that they will be great servants of the Lord together.

When our children are strong in the Lord, as JoAnn is (and Bhoy is also), we can praise the
Lord for the beginning of another Christian family and trust that our "grandchildren" will be
raised in His Wbrd and love.

]ji the Satellite Home in Solano there has not been much change, except the children are all
growing. One boy, Rio, did go home and another will be going home in March after school is
closed. They have made improvements on the olace they are renting, and are happy with it. A
new church has started in a nearby town and they are very happy to be active members and enJoy the fellowship very much. Dick and Kay Davidson are doing well, but need continued prayer
for their health as well as in carrying out their duties in the Home. Dick's cancer has not
increased and he feels fine. Kay's back has it's good and bad days, but it is improving. They
have 18 children there.

the NECHUTO OUTREACHES continue to grow. We praise the Lord for you who make it possible for
us to bring the gos^oel to them. One of the pastors that we were helping to support suddenly
passed away Just before Christmas.

He was in his late 30's.

but Joyful in the fact that he is with the Lord.

We were saddened by his going,

As we celebrated the birth of our King, he

was with the King. Please keep his family in your prayers. He had 2 children. Please con
tinue to pray for these outreaches and those who are working with the Negrito people.

In Dagupan (village) we were able to acquire land for the Negritos, and they are putting a lot

of it into gardens. Vfe were able to borrow a tractor that is plowing for them, for this first'
time. Ihey will be planting vegetables and fruits (like pineapple). This will greatly in
crease their resources for living. Obtaining land for the peoole and chapel in Bgsan is still
in progress. Please keen this in your prayers.
GOOD WHEELS I

Ws are in the process of obtaining funds to purchase a new vehicle.

This is

badly needed, as the old one needs some body work done on it, and often one vehicle is not
really enough. The Lord has been so gracious to us, through His people, and has provided all

but about $2,500 or $3, 000. Please keep this in your prayers.

Wb may be able to borrow that

amount, but it will have to be paid back in monthly installments.

Wb praise the Lord for you

who have provided for this special need that we have.

Our CHRISTMAS was a very special one. Ihe Lord really gave us a good spirit and an enjoyable
time. Things were rushed and busy at times, but the attitudes of the children were great and
we had a lot of fun. Two of our staff married each other and that took some of our "time", but

all went well and we were all blessed for it. Ifidth the Lord's help we had a very nice school
program, which we performed for the worship service on the 19th. Ws had invited the parents
of the school children to come for the program and were happy to see a good number of them able
to come. We did a lot of baking, with the big kids overseeing most of it. It is wonderful to

have big kids idio can be such a help. We baked about 2,000 cookies, besides a big wedding
cake. (Wb gave a lot of cookies as gifts, but enjoyed eating plenty as well.) We also had a
good time making plenty of popcorn balls just before the new year.

We probably made more than

200 of them. We were able to purchase another cow this year, and enjoyed a big barbecue
again. Li fact, we enjoyed the meat for many days. We did not have any visitors this year,
and it was just a nice family Christmas. The hi^ school kids went to a Christmas camp right

after Christmas for a few days, and were blessed' by it. Several of the children were able to
go home for a. visit, tdiich is good. Some of the staff also took others to their homes for a
few days.

All in all, our Christmas, the time of rejoicing! in the birth of our Savior,

God's gift to

us, was a really peaceful, joyful, relaxed, enjoyable time. We praise the Lord for hearing
and answering our prayers concerning this. Vfe h^ve close to 20 teenagers and many other

adolescents.

They were all great 1'

TORIflUea PLAHS Vfe are planning our furlou^ starting some time in May this year, for a few

months . If you are interested in us coming and jsharing with your church the work of the Lord

here, please contact the forwarding agents at the address on the heading of this letter.

Our simple words are not enough to express an appropriate thank you to all of you idio are

partners and supporters in "^s work and nujiistry. Wb are so thankful fnr* ymi onH \mr>v that

what has been done for the lord this year could not have been accomplished without each one of
you \dio has given and lifted us up in prayers. Vfe really praise the Lord for you and pray for
His blessings upon you, as you have greatly blessed us. Tfe look forward to seeing many of
you on .our coming furlough, but know there are m^y we will never meet. We pray you feel the

Lord's blessing in your life as you make it possible for us to share His love with others over
hero. May you all have a year full of rejoicing as you live for, serve, and feel the joy of the
Lord this- year.

The last three months have been busy. Now we are very busy getting ready to leave. By the
time you receive this letter we will be either in Manila or Cebu. T^fe appreciate the prayers of

The mother died last Jan., and the father brought him to us so that he can take advantage of

Domingo came 10 days old, 3 lbs.

The mother was suffering from eclampsia and severe

anemia. She was able to be released from the hospital

and went home to Ganzano (they are Negrito). Vfe took

Domingo to the Dr. 2 weeks later; he was up to U- lbs.,
and has steadily gained. The mother has now gone to be
with the Lord, having died of heart failure at the end
of the Agta Convention. Praise the Lord, she was a
Christian, and is with our Father in heaven. The father
has slight mental retardation. Joshua came at 3 weeks,

went home, but to her heavenly home. Dolores had cerebral palsey, and life has been hard for
her. Bat now she is free of this crippling disease and running free in heaven singing praises

to our God and Savior. Althou^ she could hardly talk, she had learned to read and could pray,

CONVENTION TIME

Ihe end of March was our second Annual Agta Convention.

It was a good con

vention. There were about 400 Agtas attending, | most of them Christians. There was good

fellowship and teaching and sharing. Praises flow to the Lord for the harvest that has come
throu^ this work. Two accepted the Lord at the convention.
At the end of the Convention they had a special program honoring Roy and Qeorgialee Mayfield,

VIFycliffe Bible Translators, \dio have been in the country nearly 40 years, and have translated
the New Testament and other parts of the Bible into the Central Agta language. Ue are reaping
the harvest of their many years of untiring labor. They are now returning to the States.
Vfe will miss their fellowship and sharing together, but know they will be active in the Lord's
work where they are. life appreciate their donation of a small generator for the Negrito work.
ENTERTAINING ANGEIS The last few months we have had many visitors, providing good fellowship
and sharing together in the Lord, life enjoyed Ken and Donnajean Davis from Portland, OR,

followed closely by Eldon and Sue Potts and thejir 14 companions. Again they brou^t a present

for each child (provided by individuals and churches), a magic program, and many other goodies

and enjoyable hapnenings. Vfe appreciate this party that Eldon and group put togetherthe
work of many people that goes into it, and having them here long enou^ for some fellowship
also. Next, Bert's newly married niece and husband came for about 10 days, a very enjoyable
visit. Eduardo, the husband, is a pastor of a yeiy active and growing church in Roxas,
Isabels, and they are the ones who have often come and brou^t food and money donations for the

Home.

Tak, from Tokyo Union Church in Japan, visited also.

He is pastoring a small church now,

and is having a difficult time, but we praise the Lord for his dedication and were very happy
to have him here with us. Bert's brother, Arman, is now here and will be staying here idiile
we are in the States. He will be a driver and help in many other ways. Pray for him as he

adjusts to our Ilocano life, as he is a Cebuanoj.

SCHOOL HONORS School is closed \mtil June 6. |It has been a good year. Jessie is no. 2 in his
medical school class.

Arcenio graduated from hi^ school and will be going to Seminary.

Joy-Joy received 9th honors in her 3rd year hi^ school class. In our own school our Jacob

received honors for the highest grade point average of 99*^* In ziy class Gil had the hi^est
GPA with 999*

Now it is summer and we have 113 kids home.

Please pray with us that it will

MESSAGES FROM MARY AND BERT

Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are my disciples. Then you will know the truth,
and the truth will set you free." ... "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to
sin.

Now a slave has no permanent olace in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.

if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

So

(John 8:31 & 32, 3^36)

Today we celebrated America's Lidependence Day. Being back in the States, we enjoyed the
hapnenings of the day, and also thought of the freedom that we have in this country, and what
this country was founded on. But, as our country and its leaders are turning away from the
Lord, much of that freedom is getting lost in the idea that "I am free to do vrtiat I want!" Bit,

as the scripture says, if we are in sin (doing our own will) then we are *-slave to that- sin.
But if we are in Christ and doing His will, then we are free, whether our country is free or
not. Let us all pray for our country and for our leaders, that they may return to following
the Heavenly Father and His will, so the country will not be lost to sin and destruction.
HAPPY RETURNSt We praise the Lord for the safe journey back to the States. Vie were also very
ha poy to be met in Seattle and then again met by many in Portland as we came in there. Most of
the family was there, and much family in the Lord. It is good to be here and see everyone, and
it is wonderful to have the chance to express our thanks to those of you we are able to see.
We do miss the Fhilinpines and our family and work there, but we are content that the Lord is
taking good care of them there also. Thank you for your prayers for our travel, and we ask
that you continue to pray for us as we continue to travel, and pray for the work and workers,
and children in the Philippines.

In April, before coming to the States, we attended the First All-Asia Missionary Conference,
held in Manila.

There were about 100 in attendance, including the countries of Japan, Taiwan,

India, Singapore, Australia, and Guam, as well as many from the Philippines, and some visitors
from the States. It was a great time of fellowshipping, singing, praying, and sharing together.
The next conference will be in Taiwan in 1996, and we are praying we will be able to attend,
and missionaries from many other countries as well. It was a great gathering of God's people.
From Manila we went to Cebu to visit Bert's family and friends and have a few days of good

rest before heading to the- States, and the busy schedule here.

take refuge in him. For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock exceot our God? It
is God vriio arras rae with strength and makes ray way perfect." Psalm 18:30-32 What a wonderful
God and Father we have and we oraise Him because we can trust in Him.

Vfe praise Him for His

many wonderful blessings and for His keeping watch over our work in the Hiilip'^ines while we
are here in the States. Wb oraise Him for all of you vrtio are so faithful in praying for us
and supporting this work of our Lord's.
FURLOUGH BLESSINGS AND NEEDS

Vfe are enjoying our time here in the States, getting to see

family and friends and many of you who are faithful supporters. Vfe are enjoying the blessings
of meeting together with God's people on this side of the world. Bit we are also missing our
family and work in the Philippines and are getting anxious to get back, although it will be
some time yet. Thank you for your prayers for us as we are traveling and we ask that you
continue to pray for our safety and health.

Back: at the home: Again there have been many changes in the Homes. In the main Home four more
children have gone home. Charito came to us at age 12 and is now 26 years old and has gone out
on her own. We pray that she will be a light for the Lord and stay close to Him. Jovelie
came as a tiny infant and has now gone home at the age of 3* Her family is happy to have her
home.

Ann Ann and Tony have been with us about 4 years and have now gone to live with relat

ives and seem to be happy there.

They are 8 and 10 years old.

Please pray that these children

will stay close the the Lord and show His love to their families.

A SWELL TIME I Things seem to be going well in the Homes, except

for a imimps and chicken pox epidemic.

Dianne

None seem to be too sick,

except Bert's brother, Arman, and he is now improving. We go through these epidemics every now
and then. We are thankful that we are now able to get the measles vaccine so that has cut
down greatly on that sickness.

We are inneed of hiring more pastors; and the ones we have only work oart time, as vre cannot
afford to hire them full time. They will soon be having a leadership training seminar with

the men of these villages.

Because we were able to have a literacy training for many of these

villages some of the adults can now read and can read their Bibles. Please keep this leader
ship training in your orayers, as it may provide some of the needed pastors for their churches.
We also need to purchase several Coleman-type lamos for the evangelistic work at $50.00 each.
Thank you all again for your wonderful support and prayers for us and the Lord's work going on
in the Philippines,

We eraise and thank the Lord for each of you.

It has been a joy to meet

some of you and to give our thanks to you first hand. I am sure we will meet more of you, but
some of you we may never meet this side of heaven- We are so thankful for you and appreciate
all of your"oart in the oartnership of this ministry. May the Lord bless each one of you as
He

has so greatly blessed us through you.

MESSAGES FROM MARY AND BERT

Our Dear Friends,

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him
shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) This verse is so familiar to all of us,
yet it carries the message of God's love for us in sirrple form and in full power. At this time
of year as we have celebrated the time when God came to earth as man, and as we look forward to
a new year in His love, again the magnitude of God's love amazes me.

much that He came and gave His life for us.

He loves each of us so

May your year be one filled with the joy of the

Lord each day.

Thank you to all of you who have helped us to be able to make known to the 123 children of the
two homes of the Cagayan Valley Children's Home this love of our Lord. And thank you to all of
you who have helped us be able to malce that love known to the Agta people in the 15 villages
that we are working with. And not only are we able to tell all of than the love of our Lord,
but are also able to help them have their physical needs met as well, and this because of your
loving and generous support and prayers for this ministry. Thank you for. your partnership with
us in this work of our Lord.
FURLOUGH PRAISES

IN THE STATES: We praise the Lord for our good furlough we have had. Thank you all for your
prayers for us.
We have had safe travel and good health the whole time.
We have been so

blessed by the good fellowship in the many churches and homes we have been in. The traveling
was hard and busy, but the love of the Lord shared with us has been a joy and upbuilding for us.
We know of the sacrifice many of you make to help support the Home and the Agta work, and we are
humbled by it.
We are sorry that we have not been able to see all of you and thank you
personally, but our thanks goes out to you. We are about to leave (and will be gone when you
receive this), and are excited to get back to the Philippines. It is hard to say goodbye to our
family and friends here, but we loolt forward to getting back to our family in the Philippines.
Jordan and Jacob have really enjoyed time with their cousins and have grown very close to them.
It has been great to be with parents, brothers and sisters, and other members of the family.
But we have also seen even more that we are in the great and wonderful family of God, all
brothers and sisters in Christ, and have felt that love in great abundance. Thank you to all.
IN THE PHILIPPINES: We praise and thank the Lord for
the great care and help He has been to the staff and
workers in the Hcme while we were gone. Things have
gone well for them although they are anxious for us
to get back. We have again received 3 new children
IN THE MAIN HOME. Jovelvn came to us at 2 yrs. and
6 mos. She was very anemic and malnourished and not
yet able to stand or walk alone.

The mother is

having some emotional problems because of problems

with parents and in-laws and problems in her past.

Pray that we will be able to help the parents as

well as the child.

Jesus and Joseph, ages 7 S 9,

came to us after their father died and the mother

became so emotionally distraught that she could not

care for them and send them to school.

Pray that

God and that He can give them peace and comfort in

this time of loss and upheaval in their lives.

Jovelyn and Mother

THE AGTA WORK is moving along, they are starting Leadership Training Seminars with the leaders
of the congregations. Many of the adults have taken literacy training classes and can now read.
They have the New Testament in their language so they can now study God's Word themselves and

will be able to lead their own churches in their own language. Pray for these two training
programs, and pray for the leaders to come forth and to be strong in their faith and leadership.
GRATITUDE: We want to thanJi all of you who responded to the need for the braces for Gener. We
received more than needed and were touched by your love and generosity. The extra funds have
been applied to other medical needs. Some of you have asked for project ideas, and we are in

need of a wheelchair with special supports for one of our cerebral palsy children (could cost

up to $700, but we do not )mow the price yet), and we also need mattresses for our nursery,
which are about $10 each.

DOLLARS MD PESOS AND INFLATION

While we have been gone there have been some changes in the financial needs. The prices have
jurrped and the exchange rate has gone way down. We are now in need of $12,500 per month instead

of the $10,000 that we were operating on before.

We thank you all for your faithful and

generous gifts, and ask that you would pray with us for the needed funds, because the Lord knows
the need and where the people are who can share with us in this work. General funds are a
constant and growing need.
We also have many areas of ministry and work that are vital and
essential, that will require designation on your check if you wish to help in these areas of
need, as general funds are not sufficient for them.
Jessie's Medical Education

Jessie is a fine dedicated Christian young man with a desire to serve his people and his Lord,
and has a strong comdtment to becoming a doctor to facilitate this service. He is in his
second year of medical school.

He has been No. 1 in his class, but because of illness at finals

time has dropped back to No. 2. But the cost of his education is such that designated funds are
needed to keep him in school. He is very worthy of support, but he may have to drop out.
Funds for Bible Saninarv and other training;

Many desire to attend Bible Saninary for a year or two for basic training for life and service,
while seme wish to make ministry their vocation. Many need some training for a vocation so that
they may support themselves in life.
Funds for the Agta work:

The growth of this work is amazing, and yet it could be so much more if funds were available.

Funds for this work must be designated. It is a thrilling opportunity to bring salvation and
irrprovement of physical life to aborigines who have lived in spiritual darkness and economic
depravity.

Again we thank you for your gifts and praise the Lord for each of you who is a part of this
work, whether through financial giving, prayer, giving of material goods, or your time to help
out in certain ways.

You are each important to us and to the Lord's work.

We want to thank each of you who sent Christmas gifts, for the Home and children, and for us

personally.
also.

Your love touches us deeply and helps our children to learn to give generously

Your gifts helped us to purchase needed items to take back with us.

Your actions show

that you know God's great gift and His love, and how to apply it to help others.
Amy Forsbero frcm Cornelius, OR, is coming back with us to work with us for six months,

especially with the handicapped.

She and her family have been long time supporters and Amy is

lexcited about coming and helping with the work and meeting the children they have sponsored for
(many-years. Trease pray for her as she adjusts to life in the Philippines and at the Hcnie and
as she serves the Lord there in her special way.

Let us praise the Lord together for His wonderful love shown through Christ, bom in a manger,

(^ead on a cross for our sins, risen again to bring us eternal life with Him in heaven. May our
f^ives in the year 1995 show that love and praise to all we meet.

in Christ,

Bert and Mary
