Red ribbon week winner

National Family Partnership, formerly the National Federation of
Parents for Drug Free Youth, was established as a grassroots, nonprofit
organization in 1980 by a handful of concerned and determined parents
who were convinced they should begin to play a leadership role in drug
prevention. Nancy Reagan was an Honorary Chair of NFP. NFP is a
national leader in drug prevention education & advocacy. Our mission is
to lead and support our nations families and communities in nurturing
the full potential of healthy, drug free youth. Officer Enrique Camarena
was killed while working undercover in Mexico for the Drug
Enforcement Agency. His family and friends wore red badges of satin to
honor him and his desire to make a difference. In 1988, NFP sponsored
the first National Red Ribbon Celebration.
Honey Island Student, Kendall Remerow decided to enter a contest
on www.redribbon.org, which is sponsored by NFP. The rules were:
Students and families decorate their homes front door, mailbox or
fence with a double-looped red ribbon and the theme, Love Yourself. Be
Drug Free. Schools may decorate any part of their campus.
Take a photo with your decoration and upload it to RedRibbon.org/
contest from Oct. 1 Nov. 4. You must be 18 years or older to

upload the photo and can do so from any desktop or mobile device.
Ask family and friends to vote for your entry beginning Nov. 5.
Eleven winners will be announced Dec. 5.
We sent fliers home with every student encouraging families to vote for Kendall, who was the only
candidate from Louisiana. To our
delight, she won the contest! An
officer from the local DEA came and
delivered the $1,000 check to Honey
Island on December 16th during our
morning announcements. Kendall also
won an iPad for her family.
Congratulations Kendall!

We received the following commendations:
Honey Island has a safe and positive environment where children develop a
love for learning.
Children are actively engaged and work as teams.
The teachers role is that of a facilitator of learning while students take an
active role in learning.
We also received the following recommendations:
Continue to communicate assessment results (DIBELS, District Checkpoints, Curriculum Based
Assessments) with parents.
Bring teachers in on the transition plan to support children and families as them move from and to the next
school (Cypress Cove/Little Oak).
Technology is emerging. Continue to work to put technology in the hands of children to enhance learning.
Our positive school community of students, parents, faculty and staff reflects the constructive report. I am proud
of our commendations. We will work as a school team to develop an action plan to address the recommendations.
It is our mission to ensure that Honey Island is a school where Every Day, Every Child Succeeds!
