Mrs. Smiths Scoop
Welcome to Honey Island Elementary School. We have gotten off to a great beginning this year. We
have over 670 second and third graders enrolled to date. That is exciting! Our school theme for the
2014-2015 year is Saddle Up for Learning Honey Island Style!

Our teachers are dedicated and put in many hours preparing lessons that are engaging for their
students. All teachers have websites that are linked to our school site. Please contact your childs
teacher with any questions you may have.

The PTA has been so welcoming to our faculty and staff. I appreciate the
support of the PTA Board and encourage all of you to join as members and
active participants at our school. There is a place for your contribution!

I am available by phone (985-641-3557) or email (mary.smith3@stpsb.org).
Please feel free to stop by the office. I look forward to meeting you and working
with you!

Welcome back to school Honey Island
community! I hope everyone had a wonderful
summer vacation, although it seemed a bit
short! Every year, our summer flies by, but
thats okay, because we are Rounding Up for
a great year this year!

Our Positive Behavior and Intervention
Support Program (PBIS) has kicked off the year
by having our students learn about Honey
Islands school-wide expectations Be There,
Make Someones Day, Choose Your
Attitude, and Have Fun! The rules and
procedures we have in place are all based on
these four expectations. And how do our students learn
these expectations? Our students learn our expectations
through purposeful lessons, modeling, and our Morning
Meeting Character Education lessons. Everyone on
campus uses the above expectations in our daily
language, too! For example, a teacher might tell a
student, Thanks for being there for your friend today,
when he or she helps someone out! Using those words
over and over helps students to make them a regular
and important part of their thinking and their
conversations. Parents, you too, can use the same
language with your child at home, reinforcing those
positive behaviors that we all desire in our children!

Honey Island always wants to focus on getting our
positive message out to our local community. Our
faculty and our PBIS team are busy looking for ways to
share our positive message about our students and our
school. We will plan several opportunities this year to be
out in the local community, such as at restaurant
nights. Miss Honey, our mascot, often makes
appearances at these events, and the students get a kick
out of that! This year, our PBIS team will have monthly
spotlight videos on our website for you to view. These
videos will discuss a PBIS topic, so it will be informative
for both you and your child. The video will also tell our
monthly school-wide behavior goal. So dont forget to
check them out every month!

Do you like to get good news calls from your childs
school? One student reward I love giving out is our
Good News Calls! Every week, teachers turn in a good
news call to me for students who are showing
exceptional behavior or improvement. Then I get to
make the positive phone call home! This is my favorite
time of the week! So when you see that Honey Island
phone number pop up on your phone one day, it may be
your child getting a good news call!

I am looking forward to a great year getting to know all of
our students and our parents as well! If I can ever do
anything for you or your child, I am always glad to lend a
listening ear and to help solve problems. You can
contact me through the schools front office!

PTA Presidents Corner
Welcome to Honey Island Elementary School where this
year the PTA is ready to Saddle Up for Learning! PTA
has had a great beginning so far and has already been very
busy. We welcomed back the staff by hosting a Back-to-
School lunch and gave away some great door prizes! We
also had our first Honey Hive Store on Thursday, August
21 where the children were able to spend their Buzz Bucks
that they have been working so hard to earn!

The PTA works very hard to give back to our children
every day! We fund programs that allow teachers to keep
the necessary technology in classrooms. As the year
progresses, we will be planning and supporting great events
such as the Accelerated Reading Program (ongoing all
year), Grandparents Breakfast in September, Bus Driver
Appreciation Week in October, the Library Book Fair,
Positive Behavior Support (PBS), Arts Festival in the
spring, Staff Appreciation Week in May and much more!

PTA is where we as parents can get more involved with
our children and our school! It is an organization you can
be a part of by joining as a single, family, or corporate
membership. Each class that earns 100% membership will
receive a special reward. Please consider joining PTA
today to stay informed and being a part of a great group
supporting the education of our children.

We are looking forward to a fantastic year!

Tips for a Successful Box Tops/Labels Drive:

1. Check expiration dates.
Box Tops expire! If they have expired or the expiration date
has been cut off they won't be accepted by the Box Tops
For Education (BTFE) group.

2. Completely fill your collection sheet before turning it in.
Make sure each of the 25 blanks for Box Tops is filled before
returning it to school. Only completed sheets can be turned
into BTFE. Also, only single Box Tops can go on collection
sheets. Please keep Bonus Certificates separate!

3. Be sure to put your teacher's name.
Whether you turn in completed sheets or a bag of loose
Box Tops/Labels, make sure you write your teacher's name
on it! If there's no teacher name, your class won't get credit
for your labels!

4. Keep clipping and turn in often.
Check all your favorite brands and be sure to clip all Box
Tops, Bonus Certificates, Campbell's Labels for Education,
and Community Coffee UPCs. Be sure to clip the whole Box
Top and the entire UPC on the other labels. If it isn't whole, we
won't get credit!

Reflections, is a program that promotes learning in the arts and is sponsored by the National PTA. Students are
encouraged to submit entries in one or more categories (visual arts, literature, dance choreography, film
production, music composition, and photography). Each entry will be judged on artistic merit, creativity, mastery
of the medium and interpretation of the theme. Winners will be given awards and will move on to district
judging. Entries can progress onto state and national levels. Participants will have their art displayed during the
Art festivities at HIE.

All entries must be original art work by student. Each entry must include a completed Student Entry Form and
for rules for each entry category is available on www.PTA.org/Reflections. Links can also be found on HIE's
PTA website.
This year's theme is "The world would be a better place if...." and entries will be due at the
school office on
Friday, October 24, 2014.
