and its muscular ''foot''. When the tide is high, the foot is contracted,
allowing it to move around and graze the rock for algae. Their ability of
being able to clamp themselves to the rock, seals their shell edge
against the rock surface, protecting them from desiccation.
Sea Squirts- At low tide the Waratah Anemone looks like a small red
blob on crevices near rock pools. In this state it has all its tentacles
drawn in to minimise its exposure to the air while it waits for the return
of the tide.
Tube Worm- they have a shell made of calcium carbonate this provides
protection.
Brown algae- anchors allow them to stay in one place and not fl oat off
to places where the conditions may not be as advantageous to their
survival, waxy blades prevent them from drying up, pigment
fucoxanthin well adapted for absorbing wavelengths of light in their
environment to maximize effi ciency of photosynthesis reproduction by
fl agellate spores allow off spring to be anchored in places where the
environment is equally advantageous for their survival.
Periwinkle- it has a light coloured shell to refl ect the light from sun so
their body keep in the same temperature, it has a shell to protect their
body from being eaten by predators, it is small in size so its body
(shell) can fi t in rock platform fi ssure, it lives in rock platforms, far from
the beach to avoid waves.
Limpets- It can clamp itself down on the rock face with pedal mucus
