Task D Part Two (10 marks)

Writing criteria apply
The following points should appear in the prcis:
Use of art and media to promote for and against guns
Against: cultural installations carried out by Reyes to include
o Use of TV ads
o Remodelling guns into garden tools
o Remodelling into musical instruments
For: ways in which guns are promoted to include
o Film
o Social media
o Video games
Example prcis:
A project in Mexico shows how art can demonstrate alternative uses for guns.
Pedro Reyes, a Mexican artist believes in using art to educate people about the dangers of
guns. He made TV advertisements showing the danger of handguns and persuading gun
owners to give them up voluntarily. He melted the guns down and transformed them into
garden tools which he used to carry out public tree plantings. He made other guns into
musical instruments.
Reyes is trying to counter the promotion of guns in other media. For example, in teenage
films the use of guns has tripled in the last 30 years, video games using violence regularly
come top of international charts, and gun runners pose for photos with their guns in social
media.
In his work, Reyes has competed with promoters of guns in the cultural arena by showing
how guns can be remodelled into transformative tools.
