Licensing
Licensing
Rift Software licensing is flexible, allowing licences to be exchanged between computers via an
internet connection.
The following limitations are imposed:
Computers must be on the same Internet Protocol (IP) network.
Computers must be on the same physical network.
You are required to register Rift TD when first running it following a new install. Information
gathered during registration is used for:
Licence validation.
Licence exchange.
User licence tracking.
To exchange an active Licence it is first released. By default licences are automatically released on
exiting Rift TD. They can however be locked to a computer and manually released as required; this is
useful you expect to use Rift TD remotely or you expect to lose your internet connection.
Following release the Licence is available to other users connected to the same Company Account.
NOTE:
Licences are purchased based on physical location i.e. licence cost is based on the number of
Licences that will be used primarily at the same physical location.
You are allowed to use licences remotely as long as you are working for the same office that
purchased the licence. This does not include long term secondments (in excess of three
months).
For up to date licence costs visit our website.
3.1
Registration
The Register Dialog is displayed when first activating a Rift Software product on a new computer.
Data gathered during registration:
Allows us to contact you when updates are available should you elect to receive product
information.
Allows Rift TD to assess active licence location(s) (for licence exchange).
Allows licences to be linked to Company Accounts (for licence exchange).
During registration you are required to provide User and Company data. Existing Users/Companies
should log on to their existing accounts.
Following registration an evaluation licence is generated and your Rift Software product is activated.
On expiry of the evaluation period it's possible to activate released full licences that are linked to the
Company Account. Alternatively it will be necessary to arrange for an extension of the evaluation
period or acquire a Full licence.

6.1.1
Beach Profile
Beach Profiles define a longitudinal section along a tailings beach. They are used during
deposition modelling to generate the tailings deposition surface.
Rift TD defines three Beach Profile Types:
Cyclone Profiles
Sub-aerial Profiles
Sub-aqueous (or general) profiles
Beach Profiles may be linear or non-linear.
During material definition a combination of these profiles are strung together to form a Complex
Beach Profile.
Rift TD defines two Beach Profile Models:
Master Profile
Defined Profile
The Profile Models define how non-linear beaches are developed during deposition modelling.
79
Data
X (CHAINAGE)
The Chainage is a length measure from the beach profile head into the deposit i.e. in the direction of
the supernatant pond. Typically the following convention is adopted:
Zero chainage is entered at for the beachhead.
The total beach length is entered as the maximum chainage.
The Chainage is entered in the x-column on the Data Grid.
For Master Profiles, chainage is a dimensionless value; the following convention is typically applied:
The beachhead has a chainage of 0.
The maximum beach extent has a chainage of 1.
For both Master and Defined profiles, interim values are entered to define the beach profile shape.
Y (ELEVATION)
The elevation is the relative beach elevation along the beach profile. Typically the following
conventions are adopted:
A value corresponding to the total beach fall is entered at Zero chainage.
Zero elevation is defined for the lowest beach elevation; it corresponds to the maximum
chainage.
The Elevation is entered in the y-column on the Data Grid.
For Master Profiles, elevation is a dimensionless value; the following convention is typically applied:
The beachhead has an elevation of 1.
The maximum beach extent has an elevation of 0.
For both Master and Defined profiles, interim values are entered to define the beach profile shape.
DESCRIPTION
An optional description can be entered to assist with profile identification when defining a complex
profile on the Material Data-tab.
Enter the description on the Beach Profile Data-tab.
80
Defined Profile
These define how the X (Chainage) and Y (Elevation) values are used when generating a beach.
BEACH SLOPE
The Beach Slope is only relevant to Master Beach Profiles; the edit boxes are disabled for the
Defined Beach Profile model.
Enter the Beach Slope on the Beach Profile Data-tab.
Beach Profiles; or
DATA GRID
The chainage (x) and beach elevation (y) are entered on the Data Grid. Generally the downstream
beach extent has a beach elevation of zero.
For Defined Profiles these are the physical beach length and elevation along the beach. For Master
Profiles chainage and elevation are dimensionless values; a User defined Beach Slope is used to
determine where the profile intersects topography.
81
Data
NOTE
The Beach Slope parameter is only relevant to the Master Profile model. the Slope edit boxes
are disabled if a the Defined Profile Model is selected.
Rift TD incorporates a non-linear beach profile generation tool; it can be used to generate both
Master and Defined Beach Profiles.
The non-linear beach profile tool is based on the Blight and Bental's dimensionless beach profile
(Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineering, Jan 1994, " M aster Profile for Hydraulic Fill
Beaches"):
82
83
Data
CYCLONE PROFILES
Cyclone profiles are only used to during upstream cyclone deposition. It's extent is iteratively
calculated during a deposition model run using a user defined underflow percentage.
SUB-AERIAL PROFILE
Sub-aerial profiles are used to define the beach from either the deposition point, or the cyclone beach
downstream extent, to the edge of the supernatant pond. It's downstream extent is defined either by
its intersection with natural topography by the supernatant pond definition.
84
The beach is generated from the beachhead until it reaches its maximum extent, or it intersects
surface topography.
If necessary, the final beach profile segment is extended to the topography if no intersection is
found within the defined profile length.
Beach Profile - Beach Profile Models - Master Profile
For a Master Beach Profile the defined dimensionless profile is fitted to a User defined beach
slope.
Master Beach Profiles are based on Blight and Bentals dimensionless beach profile model
(Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineering, Jan 1994, " M aster Profile for Hydraulic Fill
Beaches").
A used defined slope is used to generate a linear profile between the Beach Profile beachhead
and its downstream extent.
The non-linear profile is draped between the beachhead and its downstream extent.
BEACH EXTENT
The beach toe is defined by the beach slope and the Beach Profile Extent.
The Beach Profile Extent is defined by Beach Profile Type.
85
Data
CYCLONE PROFILES
The cyclone beach profile maximum extent is defined by:
The volume of cyclone underflow material; or
The cyclone beach profile's intersection with surface topography.
NOTE:
For volume estimation an iterative algorithm is used to define the cyclone profile extent.
Surface topography overrides if the surface intersection is encountered prior to the
desired tailings underflow percentage being achieved.
Cyclone profiles may extend below the pond surface; if this occurs the sub-aerial profile
will not be generated.
SUB-AERIAL PROFILES
The sub-aerial beach profile maximum extent is defined by:
The supernatant pond elevation; or
The sub-aerial beach profile's intersection with surface topography.
NOTE:
Surface topography overrides if the surface intersection is encountered prior to the
supernatant pond elevation being reached.
SUB-AQUEOUS PROFILE
The sub-aqueous beach profile maximum extent is defined by its intersection with surface
topography.
86
The profiles defining a complex profile are set on the Material Beach Definition Tab-sheet, which is
active when editing Materials.
NOTE
The entire beach profile can be defined using only the General (Sub-aqueous) Profile type. Enter
it as the first profile when defining the Material Complex Profile.
6.1.2

Materials
Materials define:
Deposition Rate: The rate at which solids is deposited (dry solid tonnage per day).
Material behaviour (flowable or not).
Cyclone deposition parameters.
99
Data
Beach Data:
Material Densities: The consolidated tailings dry density.
Complex Beach Profiles: The Complex Beach Profile may comprise a number of Beach Profiles.
Materials are specified by:
Deposition Lines
Deposition Nodes
THROUGHPUT
Deposition rate parameters define the daily dry solids throughput (dry tonnes per day).
It may be varied over the modelling period; throughput values apply from their start date to the next
throughput start date.
Parameters are:
Start Date.
Daily Throughput (dry tonnes per day).
Values are entered on the Data Grid.
ENABLE FLOW
The Enable Flow parameter specifies whether the material will flow or not; set this value using the
Enable Flow Check-box on the Material Data-tab sheet.
Flow Sensitivity Parameters are set using the Flow Parameter link on the Material Data-tab sheet.
CYCLONE DEPOSITION
Specify whether cyclone deposition will occur. This can be upstream, centreline or downstream
cyclone deposition.
The Cyclone Deposition data field is set on the Material Data-tab.
Cyclone Deposition to Embankment
This option is used to specify:
Beach cyclone deposition; or
Downstream or centreline cyclone deposition (cyclone underflow is used to construct a
downstream or centreline embankment):
100
CYCLONE DATA
Cyclone beach data comprises:
The cyclone material dry density (following deposition and consolidation).
The cyclone Beach Profile.
Underflow percentage.
The underflow percentage defines the quantity of underflow material that is used for upstream,
downstream or centreline embankment construction.
For upstream deposition an iterative algorithm is used to determine the cyclone beach extent.
A constant cyclone material dry density is assumed throughout facility development.
Cyclone data is set on the Material Data-tab.
NOTE
A sub-aqueous (general) beach profile can be specified in the sub-aerial beach profile
field.
The general profile will define the entire beach profile from the sub-aerial beach head to
the profile's intersection with topography.
The sub-aerial beach profile selection box is disabled.

Raise Data
Rift TD is elevation driven, raising Deposition Vectors from a start elevation to an end elevation in
a defined number of increments. Raise Data defines these raises and the raise increments.
Raise Data is used by the following Data Types:
Deposition Lines
Deposition Nodes
Raise Data can vary at each Node; when applied to Deposition Lines, linear interpolation is used to
interpolate Raise Data between Deposition Line Nodes. This results in a slopes beachhead
between along the Deposition Line segment.
Input data on the Data Grid.
129
Data
Raise Increments.
RAISE ELEVATIONS
Raise Elevations define the elevation to which the deposit will be raised. At least two elevations are
required per Raise Data record; more can be defined for more complex models.
RAISE INCREMENTS
Deposition intervals are set for each raise data record. Deposition takes place from the start elevation
to the end elevation in the defined number of Raise Increments. A

Deposition Modelling
Deposition Modelling
Rift TD is elevation driven; deposition surfaces are generated by raising Deposition Points from a
start elevation to an end elevation in User defined raise increments. Deposition occurs at each raise
increment providing detailed deposition results over facility development.
Various data types define a deposition model:
Deposition Lines and Deposition Nodes are used to generate Deposition Vectors.
Deposition Vectors are raised from an initial elevation to a final elevation using in raise
increments; Raise Data defines the raise increments.
Deposition Vectors generate Deposition Points as they are raised; deposition occurs from the
Deposition Points.
Deposition Vectors can move in space as they are raised; Vector Slopes define this movement.
Deposition Nodes also require a Horizontal Angle.
Cyclone, sub-aerial and sub-aqueous beach profiles define a Complex Beach Profile; the Complex
Beach Profile defines the tailings beach surface.
Materials define:
Deposition Rates.
Material Dry Densities.
The combination of Cyclone and/or Sub-aerial and/or Sub-aqueous beach profiles that define
the Complex Beach Profile.
Fill volumes and fill times are calculated during deposition using Material dry densities.
Deposition Results are presented graphically and on the Data Grid following a model run.
11.1

Deposition Embankment
Rift TD features the ability to develop Centreline or Downstream Deposition Embankments,
either manually, or automatically, during tailings deposition. Deposition Embankments are defined
using deposition line geometry.
For downstream or centre-line cyclone deposition, underflow material is directed to the embankment
until the embankment fill volume is achieved. Thereafter all tailings is directed to the tailings storage
basin.

Multi-Material Deposition
Deposition in Rift TD is sequential. For multi-material deposition the throughput rate is that of the
material being deposited, and not the sum of all materials being deposited.
Fill times for deposition from a particular deposition point are calculated using:
Fill volume.
Material density.
Material deposition rate.
The deposition sequence may impact significantly on the fill volume at a particular deposition location.
In particular, it should be noted that:
224
Deposition changes the base topography; earlier deposition may impact significant on deposition
later in a deposition cycle.
Fill times are dependent on the fill volume; the deposition order may have a significant impact on
deposition results.
The guidelines below were developed for simultaneous (parallel) deposition of multiple materials.
SIMULTANEOUS DEPOSITION
Deposition Vectors with the same Deposition Order are considered to have simultaneous deposition.
Deposition is however still sequential, with the vector higher up in the list being deposited from first.
The longest fill time from each vectors is reported in the modelling results, which will affect the total
throughput to the TSF. This option may be useful if attempting to calculate a make up volume to
achieve a particular elevation during parallel deposition; in this case assign a very high throughput to
the make up material to ensure a short fill time. Detailed results provide data on fill from individual
vectors.
We generally recommend that the simultaneous deposition guidelines are followed.
11.7
Supernatant Pond
The Supernatant Pond defines the interface between the sub-aerial and sub-aqueous beaches. Define
the supernatant pond elevation using the Supernatant Pond Tab on the Model Options Dialog.
225
