Rift TD Features
Rift TD is an advanced three-dimensional Digital Terrain Model
specifically developed to model tailings deposition.
Rift TD:
Is independent and not reliant on other software packages.
Has a sophisticated editing environment that supports both manual and
visual data entry.
Data is easily copied to the clipboard for reporting or for use in other software.
Tailings Deposition Features include:
Model tailings flow down valleys and around obstacles.
Model upstream, centreline or downstream deposition.
Model cyclone deposition.
Define multiple deposition nodes and/or deposition lines.
Define cyclone, sub-aerial and sub-aqueous beach profiles.
Define non-linear beach profiles.
Define multiple materials.
Deposition points move in space as they are raised.
Regenerate deposition surfaces following a deposition model run.
Automatic or manual deposition modes.
Surface Modelling Features include:
Import ASCII or DXF data files.
Multiple surface support.

Rift TD User's Manual

Glossary
Basin (Tailings):

A basin into which tailings is deposited. It may natural or

constructed.

Beach Profile:

The linear or non-linear profile (longitudinal section)

along a tailings beach. Rift TD defines three Beach Profile
types:
Cyclone Beach Profile (applicable to upstream cyclone
deposition)
Sub-aerial Beach Profile
Sub-aqueous Beach Profile
These are combined to form a complex beach profile that
defines the entire beach from the deposition point to the
pond base.

Beachhead:

The location at which deposition occurs i.e. the start of

the tailings beach.

Complex Beach Profile (Complex Profile):

The profile describing the tailings beach from the

deposition point to the pond base. It comprises one or
more beach profiles. Rift TD defines three beach profile
types:
Cyclone Beach Profile (applicable to upstream cyclone
deposition)
Sub-aerial Beach Profile
Sub-aqueous Beach Profile

Consolidation (Tailings)

The process during which the tailings mass decrease in

volume due to an applied stress; soil particles are packed
more tightly together. During tailings consolidation this is
generally accompanied by water expulsion.

Cyclone/Hydrocyclone

A device used to classify or separate tailings particles.

The incoming stream is divided into to streams:
Underflow comprising coarser particles with a lower
water content than the incoming stream.
Overflow comprising finer particles with a higher
water content than the incoming stream.

Cyclone Beach

The section of beach developed using tailings underflow

from a cyclone during upstream cyclone deposition. These
beaches tend to be relatively steep and short.

Cyclone Deposition

The process whereby tailings is classified into underflow

(coarser/dryer) and overflow (finer/wetter) components
prior to, or during tailings deposition. Cyclone deposition
may be:
Upstream;
Centreline; or
Downstream.

2015 Rift Software

Glossary

Deposition (Tailings)

The process whereby tailings is deposited as a slurry. The

slurry typically flows down a tailings beach to a
supernatant pond. Material segregates along the beach,
with coarser material settling closer to the beachhead
(deposition point). The beach-material typically becomes
progressively finer along the beach in the direction of the
supernatant pond.

Centreline Deposition

Deposition points are raised vertically. A downstream

embankment is constructed to contain tailings; this
embankment may be constructed of tailings. A centreline
embankment contributes significant to facility stability.

Downstream Deposition

Deposition points move in the opposite direction to which

tailings is deposited. A downstream embankment is
constructed to contain tailings; this embankment may be
constructed of tailings. A downstream embankment is
often a containment structure that provides facility
stability.

Upstream Deposition

Deposition points move in the direction that tailings is

deposited. A small embankment may be constructed to
contain discharged tailings; it has little or not contribution
to facility stability.

Deposition Line

Rift TD definition: A line used to generate a series of

Deposition Vectors. Deposition Lines are lines in space
through which Deposition Vectors pass. Deposition Points
are generated along the Deposition Vectors as elevations
are raised.

Deposition Node

Rift TD definition: A node that is used to generate a

Deposition Vector. The Deposition Node is a point in space
through which the Deposition Vector passes. Deposition
Points are generated along the Deposition Vector as
deposition elevations are raised.

Deposition Point

A point in space from which tailings deposition occurs.

Deposition Vector

A line in space along which deposition points are

generated. Deposition Vectors are generated using
Deposition Points/Deposition Lines and Vector Slopes.

Lift (Raise)

Rift TD definition: A complete deposition cycle from all

active Deposition Vectors.

Raise (Lift)

Rift TD definition: A complete deposition cycle from all

active Deposition Vectors.

Raise Data

Rift TD definition: Data that defines how deposition

elevations are incremented along a Deposition Vector.

Raise Elevation

Rift TD definition: A defined elevation that deposition

Licensing

Licensing
Rift Software licensing is flexible, allowing licences to be exchanged between computers via an
internet connection.
The following limitations are imposed:
Computers must be on the same Internet Protocol (IP) network.
Computers must be on the same physical network.
You are required to register Rift TD when first running it following a new install. Information
gathered during registration is used for:
Licence validation.
Licence exchange.
User licence tracking.
To exchange an active Licence it is first released. By default licences are automatically released on
exiting Rift TD. They can however be locked to a computer and manually released as required; this is
useful you expect to use Rift TD remotely or you expect to lose your internet connection.
Following release the Licence is available to other users connected to the same Company Account.

NOTE:
Licences are purchased based on physical location i.e. licence cost is based on the number of
Licences that will be used primarily at the same physical location.
You are allowed to use licences remotely as long as you are working for the same office that
purchased the licence. This does not include long term secondments (in excess of three
months).
For up to date licence costs visit our website.

Beach Profile
Beach Profiles define a longitudinal section along a tailings beach. They are used during
deposition modelling to generate the tailings deposition surface.
Rift TD defines three Beach Profile Types:
Cyclone Profiles
Sub-aerial Profiles
Sub-aqueous (or general) profiles
Beach Profiles may be linear or non-linear.
During material definition a combination of these profiles are strung together to form a Complex
Beach Profile.
Rift TD defines two Beach Profile Models:
Master Profile
Defined Profile
The Profile Models define how non-linear beaches are developed during deposition modelling.

Beach Profile - Data Fields

Beach Profile data fields are:
X (Chainage)
Y (Beach Elevation)
Description
Slope
Use the chainage and beach elevation to specify non-linear beach profiles.
Beach Profile parameters are discussed below:

X (CHAINAGE)
The Chainage is a length measure from the beach profile head into the deposit i.e. in the direction of
the supernatant pond. Typically the following convention is adopted:
Zero chainage is entered at for the beachhead.
The total beach length is entered as the maximum chainage.
The Chainage is entered in the x-column on the Data Grid.
For Master Profiles, chainage is a dimensionless value; the following convention is typically applied:
The beachhead has a chainage of 0.
The maximum beach extent has a chainage of 1.
For both Master and Defined profiles, interim values are entered to define the beach profile shape.

Y (ELEVATION)
The elevation is the relative beach elevation along the beach profile. Typically the following
conventions are adopted:
A value corresponding to the total beach fall is entered at Zero chainage.
Zero elevation is defined for the lowest beach elevation; it corresponds to the maximum
chainage.
The Elevation is entered in the y-column on the Data Grid.
For Master Profiles, elevation is a dimensionless value; the following convention is typically applied:
The beachhead has an elevation of 1.
The maximum beach extent has an elevation of 0.
For both Master and Defined profiles, interim values are entered to define the beach profile shape.

DESCRIPTION
An optional description can be entered to assist with profile identification when defining a complex
profile on the Material Data-tab.
Enter the description on the Beach Profile Data-tab.

DATA GRID
The chainage (x) and beach elevation (y) are entered on the Data Grid. Generally the downstream
beach extent has a beach elevation of zero.
For Defined Profiles these are the physical beach length and elevation along the beach. For Master
Profiles chainage and elevation are dimensionless values; a User defined Beach Slope is used to
determine where the profile intersects topography.

Beach Profile - Linear/Non-Linear

Rift TD incorporates a non-linear beach profile generation tool; it can be used to generate both
Master and Defined Beach Profiles.
The non-linear beach profile tool is based on the Blight and Bental's dimensionless beach profile

Beach Profile - Beach Profile Types

Rift TD defines three Beach Profile Types:

Cyclone Profiles
Sub-aerial Profiles
Sub-aqueous profiles
During modelling these profiles are strung together to form a Complex Beach Profile.
When generating a new beach profile you are prompted for the profile type.

CYCLONE PROFILES
Cyclone profiles are only used to during upstream cyclone deposition. It's extent is iteratively
calculated during a deposition model run using a user defined underflow percentage.

SUB-AERIAL PROFILE
Sub-aerial profiles are used to define the beach from either the deposition point, or the cyclone beach
downstream extent, to the edge of the supernatant pond. It's downstream extent is defined either by
its intersection with natural topography by the supernatant pond definition.

SUB-AQUEOUS (GENERAL) PROFILES

The sub-aqueous profile defines the section of the beach that is submerged by the supernatant pond.
It's downstream extent is defined by the profile's intersection with topography.
The sub-aqueous beach type may also be defined in the sub-aerial beach profile field if one profile is
to define the sub-aerial/sub-aqueous portions of the complex beach profile.

Beach Profile - Beach Profile Models

Rift TD defines two Beach Profile Models:
Master Profile
Defined Profile
These define how the X (Chainage) and Y (Elevation) values are used when generating a beach.
For a Master Beach Profile the defined profile is fitted to a User defined the beach slope.
For a Defined Beach Profile the profile as entered on the Data Grid.

2015 Rift Software

Rift TD User's Manual

84

Beach Profile - Beach Profile Models - Defined Profile

For a Defined Beach Profile the profile as entered on the Data Grid.

The beach is generated from the beachhead until it reaches its maximum extent, or it intersects
surface topography.
If necessary, the final beach profile segment is extended to the topography if no intersection is
found within the defined profile length.
Beach Profile - Beach Profile Models - Master Profile
For a Master Beach Profile the defined dimensionless profile is fitted to a User defined beach
slope.

Master Beach Profiles are based on Blight and Bentals dimensionless beach profile model
(Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineering, Jan 1994, " M aster Profile for Hydraulic Fill
Beaches").
A used defined slope is used to generate a linear profile between the Beach Profile beachhead
and its downstream extent.
The non-linear profile is draped between the beachhead and its downstream extent.
BEACH EXTENT
The beach toe is defined by the beach slope and the Beach Profile Extent.
The Beach Profile Extent is defined by Beach Profile Type.

Beach Profile - Beach Profile Extent

The Beach Profile Extent is governed by the Beach Profile Type.

2015 Rift Software

85

Data

CYCLONE PROFILES
The cyclone beach profile maximum extent is defined by:
The volume of cyclone underflow material; or
The cyclone beach profile's intersection with surface topography.

NOTE:
For volume estimation an iterative algorithm is used to define the cyclone profile extent.
Surface topography overrides if the surface intersection is encountered prior to the
desired tailings underflow percentage being achieved.
Cyclone profiles may extend below the pond surface; if this occurs the sub-aerial profile
will not be generated.

SUB-AERIAL PROFILES
The sub-aerial beach profile maximum extent is defined by:
The supernatant pond elevation; or
The sub-aerial beach profile's intersection with surface topography.

NOTE:
Surface topography overrides if the surface intersection is encountered prior to the
supernatant pond elevation being reached.

SUB-AQUEOUS PROFILE
The sub-aqueous beach profile maximum extent is defined by its intersection with surface
topography.

Beach Profile - Complex Beach Profile

A Complex Profile may comprise:
A cyclone profile (if upstream cyclone deposition is being modelled)
A sub-aerial profile (above the supernatant pond water level)
A general (sub-aqueous) profile (below the supernatant pond water level)

Deposition Vectors are generated; their Deposition Order and Deposition Elevation are on
the Data Grid.
Enter the Deposition Order and Deposition Elevations for each Deposition Vector on the
Data Grid.
Deposition will occur in the specified order at the specified elevation.
NOTES:
Deposition is always sequential. If two vectors have the same sequence deposition will
initially occur from the vector higher in the order (lower No.).
Refer to simultaneous deposition guidelines for multi-material simultaneous deposition.

Deposition Sequence/Elevation - Simultaneous Deposition

Deposition Vectors with the same deposition order are considered to have simultaneous
deposition; deposition is however still sequential with the vector higher up in the list (i.e. with the
lowest No.) being deposited from first. This may have significant impact on calculated deposition fill
times during multiple material deposition.
We recommend that simultaneous (parallel) deposition guidelines are followed when modeling
simultaneous (parallel) deposition of multiple materials.

6.1.5

Deposition Vector
Deposition Vectors are an internal data type that are used to generate Deposition Points from
which deposition occurs.
Deposition Lines and Deposition Nodes are used to generate Deposition Vectors. Required
geometric data includes:

Nodes - Node Values

Node Values allow you to store node elevations (z-coordinate). They can then be restored at a alter
date. This is useful should you wish to record of node elevations prior to altering a surface; the
values can be restored following modelling to restore the original surface. Node Values can also be
used to highlight model change via elevation shading.
Node Values may be a parameter other then elevation. This may be useful should you wish to plot
environmental parameters e.g. groundwater elevation, element concentrations etc.

Raise Data
Rift TD is elevation driven, raising Deposition Vectors from a start elevation to an end elevation in
a defined number of increments. Raise Data defines these raises and the raise increments.
Raise Data is used by the following Data Types:
Deposition Lines
Deposition Nodes
Raise Data can vary at each Node; when applied to Deposition Lines, linear interpolation is used to
interpolate Raise Data between Deposition Line Nodes. This results in a slopes beachhead
between along the Deposition Line segment.
Input data on the Data Grid.

Example 1: Data Start Elevation (El. 1) at Surface Elevation
Assuming:
A Deposition Vector surface intersection of 100 m.
An initial elevation, El. 1, of RL 100.0 m.
An interim elevation, El.2, of RL 125.0 m.
A final deposition elevation of RL 135.0 m.
2.5 m lifts.

For this example:

Set El. 1 to RL 100.0 m
Set El. 2 to RL 125.0 m
Set El. 3 to RL 135.0 m
Set 10 Deposition Intervals between El. 1 and El. 2

2015 Rift Software

Rift TD User's Manual

132

Set 4 Deposition Intervals between El. 2 and El. 3

This yields a 2.5 m Raise Height:
(RL 125 m - RL 100 m) / 10 = 2.5 m
(RL 135 m - RL 125 m) / 4 = 2.5 m
Similarly, for 5.0 m Raise Heights, specify 5 Deposition Intervals.

EXAMPLE 2
Data Start Elevation (El. 1) Above Surface Elevation
Assuming:
A Deposition Vector surface intersection of RL 97.0 m.
An initial elevation, El. 1, of RL 100.0 m.
An interim deposition elevation, El. 2, of RL 125.0 m.
A final deposition elevation, El. 3, of RL 145.0 m.
2.5 m lifts between El. 1 and El. 2.
4.0 m lifts between El. 2 and El. 3.
Rift TD increases the number of Deposition Intervals internally, maintaining the specified Raise
Height of 2.5 m.

For this example:

Set El. 1 to RL 100.0 m
Set El. 2 to RL 125.0 m
Set El. 3 to RL 145.0 m
Set 10 Deposition Intervals between El. 1 and El. 2
(RL 125 m - RL 100 m) / 10 = 2.5 m
Set 5 Deposition Intervals between El. 2 and El. 3
(RL 145 m - RL 125 m) / 5 = 4.0 m
During Modelling:
The number of Deposition Intervals for the first deposition elevation, El. 1 to El. 2, is
increased from 10 to 12 internally.
El. 1 is to an elevation of RL 95.0 m internally to ensuring that it is below the surface.

2015 Rift Software

133

Data

For this vector first deposition occurs at an elevation of RL 97.5 m (0.5 m above the surface).
The number of Deposition Intervals between El. 1 and El. 2 is increased to 12 for all
Deposition Vectors to ensure raise compatibility.
Deposition only takes place once the Deposition Point Elevation is above the Surface.

Deposition Modelling

Deposition Modelling
Rift TD is elevation driven; deposition surfaces are generated by raising Deposition Points from a
start elevation to an end elevation in User defined raise increments. Deposition occurs at each raise
increment providing detailed deposition results over facility development.
Various data types define a deposition model:
Deposition Lines and Deposition Nodes are used to generate Deposition Vectors.
Deposition Vectors are raised from an initial elevation to a final elevation using in raise
increments; Raise Data defines the raise increments.
Deposition Vectors generate Deposition Points as they are raised; deposition occurs from the
Deposition Points.
Deposition Vectors can move in space as they are raised; Vector Slopes define this movement.
Deposition Nodes also require a Horizontal Angle.
Cyclone, sub-aerial and sub-aqueous beach profiles define a Complex Beach Profile; the Complex
Beach Profile defines the tailings beach surface.
Materials define:
Deposition Rates.
Material Dry Densities.
The combination of Cyclone and/or Sub-aerial and/or Sub-aqueous beach profiles that define
the Complex Beach Profile.
Fill volumes and fill times are calculated during deposition using Material dry densities.
Deposition Results are presented graphically and on the Data Grid following a model run.

11.1

Deposition Surface

The Deposition Surface is the base surface on which deposition takes place. Set the Deposition
Surface on the Deposition Toolbar using the Deposition Surface Drop Down Box.

Beach Cyclone Deposition
Downstream Cyclone Deposition
Centre-Line Cyclone Deposition

Rift TD User's Manual

220

HINTS:
Cyclone beaches typically are short and have a steep beach angle. Refining elements in
the cyclone beach area prior to modelling may produce better results.
The cyclone beach toe point is assumed to rise vertically. Increase the number of raise
intervals to mitigate against this.

BEACH CYCLONE DEPOSITION

Beach Cyclone Deposition is an iterative process:
A deposition surface is developed.
The cyclone underflow percentage is compared to the User specified value.
If not within a specified limit the process is repeated.
Note:
The cyclone deposition profile takes precedence over the sub-aqueous profile; it may
extend below the sub-aqueous profile (depending on the specified cyclone underflow
percentage).
Beach cyclone deposition results are included in the sub-aerial results regardless of
whether the cyclone beach extends below the specified pond elevation.

11.4.2 Downstream/Centreline Cyclone Deposition

Tailings underflow is used to construct a Deposition Embankment during Downstream or
Centreline Cyclone Deposition. Deposition vectors either:
Move up the embankment upstream face (downstream); or are
Raised vertically (centreline).
Tailings underflow is deposited in the basin upstream of the embankment.
Rift TD's implementation of Downstream/Centreline Cyclone Deposition:
Generates Deposition Embankments at User specified intervals prior to tailings deposition
commencing.
Merges the final Deposition Embankment geometry into the deposition surface.
Deposits tailings in the tailings basin upstream of the embankment.
Calculates the underflow volume; this material is directed to the deposition embankment until the
embankment volume is achieved. Thereafter all tailings is directed to the tailings basin.

Multi-Material Deposition
Deposition in Rift TD is sequential. For multi-material deposition the throughput rate is that of the
material being deposited, and not the sum of all materials being deposited.
Fill times for deposition from a particular deposition point are calculated using:
Fill volume.
Material density.
Material deposition rate.
The deposition sequence may impact significantly on the fill volume at a particular deposition location.
In particular, it should be noted that:

2015 Rift Software

Rift TD User's Manual

224

Deposition changes the base topography; earlier deposition may impact significant on deposition
later in a deposition cycle.
Fill times are dependent on the fill volume; the deposition order may have a significant impact on
deposition results.
The guidelines below were developed for simultaneous (parallel) deposition of multiple materials.

SIMULTANEOUS (PARALLEL) DEPOSITION GUIDE

For simultaneous (parallel) deposition, the total throughput is the sum of each material throughput
rate. For this scenario we recommend that:
All material are assigned the same deposition rate; equal to the sum of each material throughput
rate (for all materials being deposited).
Material densities for all materials are identical; equal to the weighted average density of all
materials being deposited.
As the deposition sequence has an impact on deposited material tonnage it is necessary to validate
that the surface can be developed at the proposed individual material throughput rates. To do this:
Run the model multiple times, ensuring that each material is deposited first and last (see
Deposition Sequence).
Model run results provide the minimum and maximum tonnage required for each material to
generate the deposition surface.
Ensure that the proposed material deposition tonnage for each deposition raise falls within the
minimum and maximum range.
If the proposed deposition tonnage for each material falls within the minimum /maximum range it
should be possible to generate the deposition surface.

SIMULTANEOUS DEPOSITION
Deposition Vectors with the same Deposition Order are considered to have simultaneous deposition.
Deposition is however still sequential, with the vector higher up in the list being deposited from first.
The longest fill time from each vectors is reported in the modelling results, which will affect the total
throughput to the TSF. This option may be useful if attempting to calculate a make up volume to
achieve a particular elevation during parallel deposition; in this case assign a very high throughput to
the make up material to ensure a short fill time. Detailed results provide data on fill from individual
vectors.
We generally recommend that the simultaneous deposition guidelines are followed.

Supernatant Pond
The Supernatant Pond defines the interface between the sub-aerial and sub-aqueous beaches. Define
the supernatant pond elevation using the Supernatant Pond Tab on the Model Options Dialog.

2015 Rift Software

225

Deposition Modelling

Two Supernatant Pond elevation modes are defined:

Freeboard: The pond elevation is calculated using a specified freeboard. Freeboard is the
elevation difference from the beach head to the pond elevation.
Fully Defined: The pond elevation is entered on the Data Grid as a function of the deposition
elevation. Linear interpolation is used when necessary to define interim elevations.

Pond Elevations are relative to the the Deposition Point Elevation; three options are available:
The Minimum Deposition Point Elevation.
The Average Deposition Point Elevation.
The Maximum Deposition Point Elevation.
Deposition Point elevations are calculated during deposition using Raise Data during automatic
deposition; or are based on User entered values during manual deposition.
