Dr.

Hayes Wicker, Senior Pastor

Living Large
Joe Ehrmann played defensive tackle for the Baltimore
Colts and the Detroit Lions before retiring from professional
football in 1982. When his baby brother contracted cancer
and eventually died, Joe asked questions that only God
could answer and found eternal life in Christ. He determined
to live life large for the Lord. He realized that success as
concentrated in the NFL was just a shell game. So you have
money, fame, and strength? Bucks just buy more stuff. You
can crack heads with the best of them? Big deal, because
eventually you will retire to age fast as you nurse your
arthritis.
This desire for a mission with meaning compelled Joe and his wife, Paula, to
plant their family at street level on Baltimores nasty east side. We have heard
so much lately about the murders, the racial unrest, and the hatred of police in
that city. It has a great history and has been strategic in the life of our nation. Joe
saw the boys in the streets as sheep without a shepherd. He was convicted by
the saying of Edmund Burke, The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil
is for good men to do nothing.
Joe founded The Door, an afterschool ministry of athletics, tutoring, and
mentoring, as well as a Ronald McDonald House and a racial reconciliation
project, Mission Baltimore. Then came Building Men for Others. Through that
program he seeks to pop the success illusion bubble and debunk the worldly
yardsticks of culture athletic ability, sexual conquest, and economic success.
Then he returned to football and came alongside his best friend, Biff Poggi, the
head coach of the Gillman Greyhounds. Joe then served as defensive coach of
this high school team in the projects. Like the coaches at First Baptist Academy
at our church, he constantly urges them to ask of each other, What can I do for
you? Before the opening kickoff, they would hear him ask his players, What
is our job as coaches? In cadence, the team yells, To love us! What is your
job? Joe asks, To love each other. Their tough-as-nails defensive players
not only penetrate and pursue, but also love. Three out of six seasons they
went undefeated and were ranked number one in Maryland for years. May we
continue to challenge all of our young people to love one another, to impact our
community, to understand true success, and to pursue the lost by living large
for the Lord.
*There is a guest reception in the Commons following the Saturday night and
Sunday morning worship services. Pastor would love to meet you!
