A. NARRATIVE TEXT
PURPOSE/ AIM
The purpose of narrative is to amuse and to entertain the readers.

GENERIC STRUCTURE
1. ORIENTATION
To introduce the audience to the characters, the setting and the conflict.

2. EVALUATION
A stepping back to evaluate the conflicts/troubles

3. COMPLICATION
A crisis arises

4. RESOLUTION
To tell how the problem is solved for better or worse and how the solution
affects the characters.

LANGUAGE FEATURES

Focus on specific and usually individualize participants


Use of material processes
Use of relational processes or mental one
Use of temporal conjunction and circumstances
Use of past tense

EXAMPLE
SNOW WHITE
Once upon a time there lived a little girl name snow white. She lived with
her aunt and uncle because her parents were passed away.
One day she heard her uncle talking about leaving her in the house
because they both wanted to go to U>S and dont have enough money to take
Snow White.
Now White didnt want to be left behind. So she decided to run away. The
next morning she ran away into the wood. She was very tired and hungry. She has
walked for miles.
Then she saw a little cottage. She knocked no one answered so she went
inside and fell asleep.
Meanwhile, the seven dwarfs, owner of the house, were coming home from
work. They went inside and met Snow white sleeping.
The Dwarf felt pity to her so that they allowed her to stay in their house.
Then Snow White told the whole story. At the end, Snow White and the Dwarfs
finally lived happily ever after.

B. RECOUNT TEXT

PURPOSE/ AIM
A recount is a piece of text that retell past events, usually in the order in which
they happened.
The purpose of the recount is to relate events for informing or entertaining
people.

GENERIC STRUCTURE
1. ORIENTATION
First paragraph that helps the reader understand the recount, who,
where, when, and why.

2. EVENTS

Series of paragraph that tell what happened in chronological order.

3. RE-ORIENTATION
Summary and the closure of events

LANGUAGE FEATURES

use of past tense


focus on individual participants
use of connector of time to maintain the flow ; first, next,
then, finally, on the weekend etc.

EXAMPLE
Dear May,
I just want to tell you about my tour to Botanical Garden, on Thursday 24
April, year seven students went to Botanical Garden. We walked down and got into
the bus.
After we arrived at the garden, we walked down to the Education center.
First, we went to the orchid farm. Then we looked at the lovely plants. After that,
we went down to a little spot in the Botanical Gardens and had a morning tea.
Next we took some pictures and then went back to the Education centre to
have lunch. After that we went for a walk.
Soon after we had finished we went back outside. Then, we got into the bus
and returned to school.

C. ANECDOTE TEXT
PURPOSE/ AIM
This is a kind of stories that makes you laugh or probably a smile .
It deals with something unexpected or unordinary. It usually contains or amusing
incidents.
The purpose of this text is to share with others an account of unusual or amusing
incidents.

GENERIC STRUCTURE
1. ABTRACT
: signals the retelling of an unusual incidents
2. ORIENTATION : sets of scene
3. CRISIS
: provides details of the unusual incidents
4. REACTION
: reaction to crisis
5. CODA
: optional reflection of the incident

LANGUAGE FEATURES
- use exclamation
- use of temporal and conjunction
- use of action verbs
- use of relational and mental processes to evaluate events

EXAMPLE

Vegetables in it. She looked after them very carefully, and when
the summer came, they looked very nice.
One evening, Mrs Ahmad looked at her vegetables and said,
Tomorrow I am going to pick them and we can eat together.But early
next morning, he son ran into kitchen and shouted, Mother, mother!
Come quickly! Our neighbours duck are in the garden and they are
eating our vegetables!
Mrs Ahmad ran out, but it was too late! All the vegetables were
finished. Mrs Ahmad cried and her neighbor was very sorry, but tat was
the end of the vegetables.
Then a few days before Lebaran, the neighbor brought Mrs
Ahmad a parcel. In it was beautiful, fat duck, and it was a piece of
EXERCISES!
I had never thought of climbing Mt. Kerinci. I hesitated when friends of mine
asked me to join them on a one-night camping and mountaineering activity. Frankly, I
had never done this type of challenging activity before. I could not really refuse
because I had a lot of spare time in my semester holidays. I went there with five of my
friends-Antok, Rio, Angga, Danang and Indra.
We started to walk upwards through the bushes first and then into the real
jungle. As we moved, we heard wild animal noises and we saw monkeys jumping from
branch to another. Judging from the plants, we were sure that we were in a rainforest
area.
At midday, we came to the peak of the mountain and saw the large crater.
There was a white flag there to remind visitors of dangers. We took our photos and
then we began to rush down the mountain.

him in a couple days. While theyre apart the husband sends his wife an email, but
accidentally sends it o a woman whose husband has died recently. After reading the
message, she passes out cold.
Her daughter, wondering what had disturbed her mother so much, reads the
email: Dear Darling, I have really missed you! I am looking forward to your arrival
tomorrow. Oh, and its really hot down here!

I had a bad experience when I did shopping because of the shop assistants
fault. However, the security officer of the shop really embarrassed me. He accused me

That was a Sunday afternoon. I went to a fashion shop with my friends. I choose
a pair of blue jeans to buy and paid for them at the cashier. Unfortunately, the shop
assistant was careless. So, he forgot to take the censor clip on the blue jeans. So, when
I left the shop, the detector beeped. The security officer shouted at me, Hey, you!
Stop! Then, he took me to the managers room.
After examining, the security officer and the manager realized that it was not my
fault. They said they were very sorry about what happened. Finally, the manager asked
me to take one piece of clothing for free.

The tiger asked the mouse deer to help him. But the mouse deer turned and ran away into
the forest.

THE GOLDEN TREE


Once upon a time a long, long, long time ago in a little village there was a big
place bigger than the village it self and in the palace there lived a King. The King wanted
to be rich.
Now one day the King promised one of his gardeners three million gold coins if he
could grow a tree all year round which bore rich golden fruit.
The gardener searched all over the countryside but he could not find the right
seed to grow a tree which would bear golden fruit.
So at last he went to see the wise old owl lived deep in the forest and knew all
about many things. The wise old owl told him what to do and where to go to get the right
seed to plant. The gardener went exactly where he was told and did exactly what he was
told. He planted the seed and gave it some water, some fertilizer and he waited.
Suddenly the tree sprang u so quickly that it made the gardener jump.
The gardener watched as the tree began to bear rich golden fruit. He ran back to
the palace and took the king to see the tree. When the king had stood there for a long
time, starring at it open-mouthed, the gardener asked for his three million coins. So the
King agreed to the request and the gardener took his money and went home and lived
happily ever after.

The Ant and the Grasshopper


Long ago on a sunny hillside, there lived an ant and a grasshopper. The grasshopper
was a handsome insect with a glossy green coat. All day long he sat in the sun and made
music, filling the hillside with his summer sounds.
I dont believe that winter will ever come! he chirruped.
The ant was small and dark. She bustled about everyday, collecting grass seeds to
store in her nest.
Oh yes, it will! she said
But soon the leaves began to fall from the trees. It grew colder and colder. At last one
day, feathery flakes of snow began to fall across the hillside.
The ant was snug in her nest under a stone. She had enough food for the winter.
Outside she heard a faint sound. It was the grasshopper.
Dear Ant, he croaked. Please give me some food.
But the Ant was firm. I am sorry,she said. I need this food for my family.
A thick layer of snow settled over the hillside, and the grasshopper was heard no
more.
