MAKING YOUR LEGEND MATCH WHAT IS ON THE MAP

Option #1) Look at each layer you have listed in the legend by itself and note what is
being displayed. If there are no features on the map, just check off the layer in the TOC.
It will not show in your legend if you have not changed your legend properties.
Option #2) Eyeball what is on the screen. Bring up the layer properties window for
that layer and click on the Symbology tab. Manually remove each symbol that is not on
the screen by clicking on the symbol (or multiple, by holding down the control key), and
clicking Remove. Once you have removed all of the unwanted symbols, click OK.
I use option #2 for the ownership layer, if you choose to only show the ownership colors in
the legend that are on the map. Ownership parcels are easier to eyeball
You will need to re-add the ownership layer (or keep an extra in your TOC) when you
move to a different area on the ground and your ownership changes.

Option #3) This is a more accurate way of isolating your data to the area of interest, and
making your legend match. It takes a few more steps, but it is well worth it
First of all, check the layers in your TOC to see which ones actually have data on the map.
That will eliminate any unnecessary work.
We are going to add a new tool to an existing toolbar. It is the Select Screen button. Go to
Tools>Customize, click on the Commands tab. Click the Selection menu on the left, and
then scroll down under Commands to find Select Features on Screen.

Click on Select Features on Screen

with the left mouse button and drag it
up to an existing toolbar.
It will look like the icon on
the left.
Click Close.

The above method shows you how to customize your toolbars with additional functions and
commands. You may have noticed that there are many commands available that are not on
the existing toolbars. Take some time to check them out.
Set your selectable layer (s) to the layers that
you want to modify in your legend. You can
choose more than one. Selection>Set
Selectable Layers

-2-

Once that is done, click on the Select Screen icon that you just added. It should turn
everything from your selectable layer(s) on the screen blue.
Right click on each selectable layer that you
chose, click on Selection>Create Layer
from Selected Features. Notice at the top
of your TOC you will see XXXXXX
Selection. This is a subset of the original
layer.

-3-

Now its just a matter of symbolizing your subset. Open the layer properties of the
selection, and click on the Symbology tab. Choose Unique Values under Categories, and
then choose the value you want to symbolize on. In this case it is PROJTYPE. Click on
Add All Values. Your layer will now only show what is in the extent of the screen.
Symbolize the values. Click OK.

Certain layers, and in this case, Range Improvements, have a standard style set we apply.
Other layers with standard style sets are:
Proposed Improvements
Ecological Status
Range Condition
PFC
Fire Year

-4-

We do have an ownership style set, but when you apply a style set you lose the text for the
legend-- it defaults back to the layers attributes (i.e. BLM Administered Land goes back to
PD). So, we usually just bring the ownership layer back in again, or import symbology from
the layer file, either by browsing to the layer file directory or keeping an extra copy of the
layer in the TOC.
