Johannes BRAHMS

Symphony No. 4
Hungarian Dances Nos. 2 and 4-9
London Philharmonic Orchestra • Marin Alsop
NAXOS is proud to present the fourth and fnal release in the major new cycle
of Brahms Symphonies featuring the London Philharmonic and Marin Alsop.
Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 won immediate success at the time of its 1885 première
and was praised by the critic Hanslick for its demonstration of the composer’s
mastery of ‘all the secrets of counterpoint, harmony and invention’. The symphony
is coupled with seven of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances imaginatively orchestrated by
Peter Breiner in a special Naxos commission for this recording.

Recognized as one of America’s
fnest song composers, Ned
Rorem has also written music
for orchestra, including three
Symphonies, a Violin Concerto
and a Flute Concerto. Composed
in Morocco in 1951, the Second
Piano Concerto has a distinctly
American character.
See page 12 for more details.
From TDK, Julian Reynolds
conducts the Orchestra della
Fondazione Arturo Toscanini
and the Coro Lirico Amadeus
in a wonderful and inspired
performance of Puccini’s
Il Trittico
See page 39 for more
details.
Penderecki’s choral works are
known for their emotional appeal
and contemporary compositional
techniques. While his recent choral
works have tended to be monu-
mental in scale, he has also written
several of a more compact nature
which maintain the power and
impact of those more epic pieces.
See page 3 for more details.
Euroarts presents a New Years
Eve celebration like no other.
Daniel Barenboim conducts the
Filharmonica de Buenos Aires
in a remarkable performance
of Tangos by Piazzolla, Gardel,
Ginastera, and others.
See page 30 for more
details.
In these performances by José
Serebrier and the Bournemouth
Symphony Orchestra, these
tone poems have a unique
sumptuousness of sound and for
those who love this evocative
music gloriously played, there
is much here that will ravish
the ear.

“A measure of her artistic accomplishments
may be gleaned from the present release
… Haskil exhibits vibrant tone, clean
articulation, evenness, and an immense
palette of tonal color. And special mention
must go to Fricsay, whose crisp and bright
Mozart renditions are among the all-time
treasures of classical music recordings.”

—Robert Croan,
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
“Stephen Hartke’s opera ‘The Greater Good
or the Passion of Boule de Suif’ was warmly
received at its world premiere last summer at the
Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown, N.Y., and
this engaging live recording makes clear why.
Hartke’s music is vividly theatrical, with a wide
range of dramatic effects and stylistic resources
that bring the characters and situations to life, and
he can write a simple and alluring vocal melody
when that’s what is called for.”

—James Oestreich,

“The work typifes Tower’s splendid
ear for sonority and her subtle
harmonic sense, not to mention her
ease and authority operating within
the American symphonic syntax as
defned by Copland and his circle …
Naxos’ frst-rate engineering mirrors
the music’s excitement and immediacy.
Enthusiastically recommended!”

The 5@H9FB5H=J97@5GG=75@ sub-genre is music that stands outside of the classical music tradition as a response
to - and departure from - its conventions. Alt-Classical composers question accepted notions of beauty and even the
concept of music itself; they encourage performers to create new sounds in previously unimaginable ways from old
instruments; they find new places to perform their music beyond the concert hall. 5@H9FB5H=J97@5GG=75@ doesn’t
represent one particular compositional school or style: rather, it sums up an attitude, a mindset shared by composers
who want to do things differently, and whose influences and influence can be heard not only in their own approach to
music and sound but also in all forms & genres of alternative minded music, from jazz, to electronica, to punk rock &
post punk, to out-rock & post-rock, as well as all out noise (Japanese style and beyond).

JOHN CAGE's father once advised him: “If someone says ‘can’t,’ that shows you what to do.”
It’s a safe bet that the 16 iconoclastic composers on this aptly named BUlcgcZ5aYf]WU compilation
would agree wholeheartedly with that defiant sentiment.
Sonic rebels in any genre of music or sound experimentation have consistently challenged accepted notions and
standards of composition, performance, and even sound itself. Some have dedicated themselves to the subversion
of existing musical forms; others have rejected those forms outright and created new ones of their own. Their anti-
authority stance has been rooted as much in the social as the personal, directed at the dissonant trajectories of the
century past as well as present. Faced with the uncertainties and complications of modern life, the onrush (some might
say onslaught) of technology, and the growing instability both between and within nations, these artists have chosen
to communicate their personal visions in a musical tone and language that is controversial, often confrontational, and
always compelling.
Experimentalists like JOHN CAGE and GEORGE CRUMB utilized instruments in surprising and innovative
ways to create radical new sound worlds. Minimalists such as
PHILIP GLASS
and
TERRY RILEY
took repetition to extremes in their quest to build bridges between disparate music genres. European modernists
KRZYSZTOF PENDERECKI and GYÖRGY LIGETI revolutionized classical music forms with mind-
warping atonality.
ARVO PART

SOFIA GUBAIDULINA
