TEACHERS HANDBOOK
THE ROLE OF TEACHER
It is not easy to teach English to those for whom English is not the first language. The
role of a teacher teaching English as a second language is crucial. He needs to keep in mind
the following basic assumptions :
L No two languages are structured alike.
L The structure of the language to be taught should be understood properly.
L Speaking comes before reading and writing.
L The minimum use of mother-tongue should be made in teaching English.
L Translation and grammar help at a later stage.
SITUATIONAL APPROACH
The teacher of English in a typical Indian school must create culturally relevant
situations to teach. It means that everything, from the teaching of the word or the sentence
to the paragraph, must be related to a specific situation. This is particularly relevant to the
teaching of grammar. Isolated sentences should be avoided as far as possible while teaching
an item of grammar such as determiners, prepositions, the change of voice, etc. The language
study is, and ought to be, interesting, and the situational approach makes it so.
READING THE TEXT
It is important for a teacher to introduce a lesson to his class in an intelligible and easy
English. He may read the whole lesson or a part of it. Thereafter, he should ask his students
to read the lesson silently. If it is not possible in a large class, the students may be asked to
read it at home and come prepared to answer basic questions. Relevant, multiple-choice
questions should be put to them to enhance their understanding of the text. The wordattack exercises must be prepared carefully. Let the students guess the meaning of new
words/phrases in the context. They can be asked to go to the library and look for these
words in the dictionary.
TEACHING HOW TO WRITE
Reading is a passive process, while writing is active. The teacher in the current
examination-oriented system must evolve effective techniques to make students learn to
write English. As it is not possible to learn about writing at once, he needs to control the
purpose of the writing. He must focus on the teaching of what we call expository prose
that is, reporting, explaining and evaluating. In the beginning, clues or notes must be
provided. Needless to say, the effective writing requires thinking, reading, grammar, and
much more. The teacher must have a lot of patience to enable his students to make a sure
and visible progress from speaking and reading to writing stage.
IMPORTANT TEACHING TASKS :
L Focussing on the spoken language, before undertaking reading and writing tasks.
L Relating words/phrases to specific culture-oriented situations.
L Encouraging independent reading of the text.
[2]

[Teachers Handbook P.Papers Eng. XI]

L Promoting interaction, discussion, group activities, etc.

L Helping to cultivate reading and thinking habits.
L Building on the exercises given in the textbooks.
SECTION AREADING COMPREHENSION
TEACHING OBJECTIVES
The teachers should enable the students to develop the major reading skills skimming,
scanning and inferential reading. They should also help them with the technique of
developing word attack skills and answer the multiple-choice questions (MCQs) properly.
Skimming is the first step in the proper comprehension of a given passage to test the
learners reading skills. It implies rapid reading to determine the main idea/ideas. The
learner should be advised to ignore the difficult words at this stage.
Scanning implies slow and alert reading to facilitate a complete understanding of the
passage. It is a good strategy to ask the students to look through the questions and underline
the portion relevant to the answers.
Inferential reading aims at making a deduction or drawing a conclusion based on the
information given in the passage. The students should be asked to read between the lines for
possible clues. To draw an inference one may have to read the entire poem or passage carefully.
Word-attack skills require the student to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words/
phrases from the context in the passage itself. The teacher should ensure an extensive drill in
this area. The occasional use of dictionary may be made to facilitate learning.
Note-Making : Note-making is an important skill. Notes are made with main headings,
sub-headings and sub-sub headings in different formats. The student should be given an
adequate practice in making notes on different types of paragraphs. He should be explained
as how to use standard abbreviations (U.S.A., e.g., Dr., etc.) and abbreviate key words in
the passage (bks. for books, intnl. for internal, etc.)
The Reading Section will have two questions. Question 1 will have a long passage
of VSAQs 350-400 words for comprehension. It will have two sets of questions :
(a) 6 MCQs carrying 1 mark each
(b) 6 VCQs carry 1 mark each
Question 2 will have reading passage of 550-600 words for Note-making (3 marks)
and Summary (5 marks)
The teacher should help and guide the students to do the various assignments given in
Evergreen Practice Papers, Vol. I. They should train them to :
(i)
(ii)
(iii)
(iv)
(v)
(vi)

read at varying speed depending on the purpose of reading,

identify the main points of a text,
understand relations between different parts of a text,
deduce the meaning of unfamiliar words or expressions in a given context,
analyse, interpret and infer the ideas in the text, and
write complete sentences as answers.

[Teachers Handbook P.Papers Eng. XI]

[3]

The students should be asked to concentrate on the usual testing areas :

(a) Sequence of events
(b) Relationships
(c) Cause and effect
(d) Facts and figures
(e) Data
(f) Dates
(g) Names
(h) Places
Then, they can be drilled to answer Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).
Some Useful Tips
L Ask the students to proceed step by step : skimming, scanning, underlining the
relevant portions for answers, writing the answers, and revision. The same procedure
is true in the case of note-making.
L Help the students to choose the most appropriate option out of the ones given as
answers.
L Encourage the students by telling them that they can get hundred per cent marks.
SECTION BWRITING SKILLS & GRAMMAR
WRITING
TEACHING OBJECTIVES
In the writing section, the student is required to attempt one out of three short
compositionsnotice, poster, advertisement. He is also to write one out of two compositions
in the form of article, speech, report writing or a narrative, and one out of two letters
business/official letters, letters to the editor, application for a job and letter to the school or
college authority.
The teacher should help the students to :
(i) think and express ideas in clear and grammatically correct English,
(ii) write in a style and format appropriate to a particular type of composition,
(iii) expand notes into a piece of writing,
(iv) write a composition based on clues provided by a given stimulus such as a diagram,
picture, graph, map, cartoon or flow chart.
Short Compositions : The student should pay attention to the proper format to be
used to draft a notice, poster or advertisement.
Letter : The students make many mistakes in the punctuation of the name and address
of the sender. They also use wrong forms of date, salutation and subscription. For example,
they write 12-10-2008 or 12/10/2008, or Dear father or Yours sincerely or Your sincerely.
The teacher should check and monitor such mistakes in the layout. He should point out the
correct layout, appropriate format, style and tone.
[4]

[Teachers Handbook P.Papers Eng. XI]

Article/Speech/Report/Narrative : The teacher must encourage the students to read

articles in newspapers and magazines. He should discuss some topics in the class, clearly
explaining how to introduce a topic, develop and conclude it. He should also tell how to
develop the given hints or clues from a visual.
The role of the teacher in the area of writing is immense. The teacher is to encourage,
guide and help the students. He must monitor, check and revise the written work.
GRAMMAR
TEACHING OBJECTIVES
The teacher is to help the students in learning the following items by clarifying the
relevant rules with the help of examples from real-life situations. The focus should be on
the correct usage.
Determiners : The student is to be helped in using determiners correctly, particularly
articles (a, an, the). He should be told where to use determiners and where not to use them.
Examples : Death is inevitable.
The death of his father was sudden.
Tenses : The teacher is to focus on the correct use of verb. He should give a lot of
practice in various tense forms past, present and future.
Modals : Modals (can, could, may, might, etc.) express possibility, permission, command,
duty, obligation, request, etc. The teacher can tell how different modals are used to convey
one idea. For example, we can use could or would to express polite request, and may or
might to express possibility.
Clauses : It is important for a learner to know different types of clauses and their
grammatical functions. The teacher should give the students a lot of practice in this regard.
He can take up one sentence each having a noun, an adjective or an adverb clause, and
tell the difference.
Examples : He knows he is a thief. (noun clause)
This is the pen that belongs to him. (adjective clause)
He left when I came. (adverb clause)
Common Errors : The student should be made aware of a large number of minor but
serious errors in the use of different parts of speech, determiners, modals, infinitives, etc.
Integrated Grammar :
Editing Task : Two types of editing tasks are set in the question paper : correcting an
error and supplying a missing word.
Examples : (i) A parent may made this mistake.
(ii) A parent may/this mistake.
The teacher should tell the students why made is wrong in the first sentence and is to
be replaced with make, and that the word make is missing after may in the second line.
It requires a constant practice to edit a passage.
Reordering of Sentences : The student must be given a thorough practice in
identifying and properly placing subject, verb and predicate.
Example : him/well/I/know
I know him well.

SECTION CLITERATURE AND LONG READING TEXT

TEACHING OBJECTIVES
Fiction : It is the most popular genre of literature, covering novels and short stories
which are basically imaginative or fictive. While dealing with short stories, the teacher
should help the students with the understanding of the main features of fiction story,
plot, theme, characters, etc. Most of the questions pertain to these features. While a story is
an account of a series of events, a plot is an account of how these events are inter-related
and to what effect. The theme is the main idea that a writer wants to project through the
story. A story may have more than one idea or theme. Characters are revealed through
physical features, mental traits, action/events, dialogues, etc.
Non-fiction : Non-fiction includes essays, biographical and autographical pieces,
reports, descriptions, etc. It is often factual and objective. The teacher should ask the students
to focus on the ideas and their development in non-fictional works, and encourage them to
think of other situations in life to which these ideas can be related.
Poetry : It is difficult to interpret a poem correctly simply because its structure is often
complex, and language metaphorical. A poet does not express his ideas directly. Often he
uses imagery to convey his meaning. Each and every word in a good poem adds to the
totality of meaning. Therefore, the task of the teacher becomes all the more difficult. He
has to help the students to know what the poet is trying to say. Then he is to explain how
the poet expresses his experience. Thus, he is to deal with both content and form. In order
to understand the form or structure of a poem, we have to take into view the poetic devices
employed by a poet such as simile, metaphor, rhyme, rhythm, pun, repetition, alliteration,
etc.
The teacher must not merely point out a particular simile or metaphor in a poem but
also explain its function. For example, in the poem The Laburnum Top the poet compares
the goldfinch to a lizard sleek as a lizard because the way the bird sneaks into the
thickness of the tree reminds him of a lizard nimbly passing through a narrow slit. In The
Voice of the Rain, Walt Whitman uses the metaphor Poem of Earth for the rain. As a
poem is characterized by music and rhythm, so is the rain.
Drama : A drama or a play presents a story in a form that can be enacted before an
audience. Like a short story or a novel, it has a plot, characters, dialogues, an atmosphere,
and an outlook on life. Most of the questions on a play pertain to these features, and the
teacher must ask the students to concentrate on them to understand and appreciate a play.
While discussing a character in a play, it is important to take into view the opinions of other
characters about him or her. While discussing the theme of a play, we have to consider the
play in totality and not rely on what one particular character says, or what the playwright
himself says outside the text.
The student should be encouraged to read the long reading text (one out of two prescribed
by the CBSE) and help in its overall understanding, with the particular focus on content,
form, theme, characters, etc.

Long Reading Text Novels please consult Evergreen Practice Papers-Volume II.

SUMMARY
Books have left no field unexplored.
They are available on almost all topics,
big or small. They are helpful in
spreading knowledge and advancement
of civilization. Thus, they are the mines
of intellectual wealth. But the things
were different in the absence of books,
when few people could read. Rocks[11]

pillars and parchments served the

purpose of books then. As now, books
provide permanence to the ideas of the
scientists and philosophers. They cater
to the varying tastes of people.
Libraries, big publishing houses
reprinting old classics in paperbacks
have popularised reading.

river, which in the dry weather was a
dusty nullah, in flood. This mystery

and he began to speculate on wave
motion. It was when his father, a
conscientious magistrate, was away to
a village to provide relief to the people
there. The boy who had annoyed his
grandmother by taking her clay image
of Shiva did not want to go home when
in the company of his father, he always
got frank and satisfactory answers to
his queries. Once on seeing a bush on
fire and seeing myriads of tiny flies, he
wanted explanation for all such things.

1.

Dear Sir
I want to draw your kind attention to
the illegal extraction of stones being
done by some unscruplous and greedy
trade mafia engaged in construction,
buildings, roads and bridges. The result
is that the ecology of the region is badly
affected. Moreover, many public
monuments are in very bad condition.
The walls of the old fort are crumbling.
The famous Chaar Minaar needs
immediate repairs.
Immediate steps should be taken
against those who indulge in illegal
stone extraction. Valuable heritage
buildings must be saved from wear and
tear, and air and water pollution.
I hope you will initiate the desired steps
to remedy the problem.
Thank you very much.

Sir
I want to draw your attention to the
rise in the number of violent incidents,
robberies and murders in our city. The
people feel totally unsafe. It seems as if
there were no law and order in the city.
Only yesterday an old couple was found
murdered in a posh colony. The police
seems to be clueless and ineffective.
During the last week at least five
incidents of chain-snatching have been
reported from various parts of the city.
In one incident the woman fell so badly
from the Activa-scooter that she
received a head injury and died a day
later.
My request to you is that you should
take immediate steps to restore the
confidence of common man in the
effectiveness of policing. For example,
patrolling by constables in sensitive
localities should be intensified. The
proactive steps are also needed to be
taken. The ruffians should be rounded
up. The bikers should be thoroughly
checked. The intelligence network of
the police should be more active and
effective.
I hope you will look into the matter and
take necessary steps to control the rising
crime graph in our city.
Thank you very much.

Sir
Let me express my concern about the
malpractices indulged in by the
[23]

managements of private schools in our

city through the esteemed columns of
your popular newspaper.
Private schools in our city are highly
exploitative. Most of them are being
run in residential areas without any
facilities. The students are cramped in
small, dingy rooms. They have no
playgrounds to play. To make matters
worse, these schools harrass parents at
the time of admission forcing them to
pay donation and high tuition fees.
Small kids are given difficult tests for
admission. Some schools force extra
coaching and extract high charges.
The authorities must take steps to
regularise these schools. There should
be a board to check the malpractices of
these schools.

In the name of freedom of expression,

the TV channels seem to be overlooking

The authorities must look into the

Sir
Let me express my views on terrorism
which, I feel, is a global problem now,
in the columns of your esteemed

Terrorism has gripped the world so
completely that there seems no escape
from it. No continent can boast of being
free from terrorism. Whatever may be
the ideology of terrorism, it leaves
behind death, destruction and
suffering. Keeping in view the terrorist
happenings like W.T.C. attack, we can
say that the life of an ordinary citizen
is all the time in danger.
Clever politicians, religious leaders and

Sir
Let me express my views on the scenes
of sex and violence being shown on TV
these days through the columns of your

a routine. Some dialogues and dance
forms have obvious sexual overtones.

5.

Dear Sir
Kindly allow me to express my views
on the increasing crime against women
in big cities through the columns of your
esteemed newspaper.
[Teachers Handbook P.Papers Eng. XI]

It is a matter of concern for us all that

women do not feel safe anytime,
anywhere in our big cities. It appears
that molesters, kidnappers, chainsnatchers, rapists and murderers have
been let loose on innocent women. These
ruffians move about in buses, trains or
on their motorbikes. Whenever they get
an opportunity, they indulge in
criminal activities. In many instances
such ruffians are caught and beaten
by the public. But once they are handed
over to the police authorities, there is
no mention of their names. The attitude
of the police authorities is highly
deplorable and dismissive. Surprisingly,
some members of political parties try to
defend such ruffians, which only encourages criminal activities.
The government should take immediate
steps to ensure the safety of women in
every city. The criminals deserve no
pity. Women too should take precautionary measures while going out alone.

Respected Sir
I am a student of XI-A, Roll No. 55. I
want to draw your attention to the
painful case of ragging of junior
students by some senior students in and
outside the classrooms. These senior
students force the innocent, helpless
students to do impossible tasks such as
climbing a tree or wall, or go naked.
They sometimes ask them to sing vulgar
songs or abuse them. They make fun of
them, slap and abuse them. They also
threaten them against reporting their
behaviour to anyone.
I hope you will depute some teachers to
discipline these senior students so that
the image of our school is not sullied.
Thank you very much.
Yours obediently
Karanvir

Global Terrorism
Global terrorism is at its worst these
days. Terrorism in the name of religion
has spread fast in many countries of
the world, taking huge toll of human
lives. Most of the terrorists are young
people who have been wrongly
indoctrinated in believing that they are
fighting for a cause. Religious prejudices,

The degradation of our environment

continues unabated. Deforestation on
a large scale has led to droughts, floods,
landslides and land erosions. Rapid
urbanization is responsible for the
disappearance of green belts. The
ecological imbalance results in such
disasters as earthquakes and tsunamis.
Polluted environment is becoming a
health hazard. The need of the hour is
to take urgent steps to protect the
environment. To preserve our forest
wealth we should plant more and more
trees. Trees bring rains and keep the
upper soil intact. They help in keeping
ecological balance. Industrial houses
should take care not to pollute rivers and
lakes with dangerous chemicals,
industrial waste, garbage and dirt.
There should be curbs on those vehicles
which emit excessive smoke in the air.
Unplanned urbanization must be
checked by the government. People
[27]

should be made aware of the dangers of

polluted environment. They should be
encouraged to protect the environment
in every possible way. Holding of
exhibitions and seminars on the hazards
of air, water and noise pollution will go
a long way in educating the people. The
media can play an important role in
highlighting the need to preserve
environment and ecological balance.

The Relevance of Newspapers

Most of us are happy with the 24-hour
TV news channels. They provide us
with instant news from every nook and
corner of the world. But the news
telecast on these channels are only
informative and sometimes quite
misleading. The newspapers, as such,
have not lost their importance and
utility. Their number has not dwindled
as was once thought that it would.
Newspapers have time to verify and
analyse the news. So what we read in
newspapers is quite objective and
authentic. Moreover, we can read a
newspaper at our leisure. Newspapers
are important not only for news but
views also. Most of them publish good
articles on issues of public interest. They
can be preserved as historical
documents. Then, they cater to the
needs of many categories of readers
such as employers, traders, job
aspirants, educationists, writers, etc.
Thus, the relevance of newspapers is,
and will remain, intact for a long time.
With the on-line appearance their reach
has rather expanded and the utility
increased.

Use the following points to develop the

It is rightly said that to use latest

technology the right way is in the
hands of the youth of today. Every
technological advance has its plus and
negative aspects. It is up to us to ignore
the negative aspects and make use of
what is good. The cellphone, for
instance, is perhaps the best
technological gadget in recent times. We
can use it to contact anyone wherever
we are, do business, send messages and
e-mail, browse the internet, listen to
songs, and can even enjoy a movie now.
But we can misuse it if we use it for
violent and unlawful activities. The
excessive use of the cellphone can cause
serious ailments like cancer and
arthritis. Similarly, the computer is
very useful but it can be misused in
several ways. The hackers can do great
harm to anyone and anything by
misusing a website. The need of the
hour is to use such devices to promote
harmony and goodwill in society.

One of the most important problems

that the teachers and parents are facing
is the rapidly increasing indiscipline
among boys and girls. Young boys and
girls have become so unruly, wild and
indisciplined that they openly oppose
their parents and teachers for whom
[Teachers Handbook P.Papers Eng. XI]

they have no respect. They openly bunk

classes, sit in the canteen for long hours
and waste the hard- earned money of
their parents. At home, they spend their
time watching TV or chatting on the
computer. If their mother or father
forbids them, they become so angry that
they stop talking to their parents. It is
not a healthy state of mind. They are
extremely restless and appear to be lost.
Perhaps they take for granted the love,

Friends ! Good morning ! I am here to

stand to speak on an important topic :
Too Much Video Games are Harmful.
There is no doubt that video-games are
greatly in vogue these days. Many such
games are quite interesting and
thrilling. They are also somewhat
educative. They broaden our outlook.
But the problem arises only when we
become addictive to such games. There
are many of us who spend hours
together on playing these expensive
games. We do so at the cost of our
health, studies and social life. By sitting
before the screen for long, we invite
many diseases such as obesity and
diabetes. Sedentary habits may lead to
many other fatal diseases. We also
neglect our studies. We fail to do our
regular homework. We remain cut
away from our friends, relatives and
even parents. Therefore, we should
limit playing video-games and instead

Honourable Principal, worthy teachers
and dear friends !
I am here to urge my friends to say No
to plastic wares which we are in the
habit of using daily. There is no doubt
that plastic wares are quite handy,
cheap and popular. What is not realized
is that plastic being non-biodegradable
cannot be disposed of. We simply throw
away plastic glasses, plates, boxes, etc.
These block water channels. Sometimes
the stray cattle swallow plastic and get
a painful death. Water is polluted by
the heaps of plastic waste. In case,
someone burns plastic, air is badly
polluted and gives out poisonous stench.
Therefore, it is high time for plastic
wares to be replaced by the ones made
of paper or jute. Jute bags are coming
into fashion once again. The authorities
must put a ban on the use of plastic
bags, and ensure its strict compliance.
Thank you.

Patiala, June 10 : Five people lost their

lives and over ten received 70% burns
in a major fire that engulfed ABC Mall
here on the Cool Road yesterday at
about 4 pm. The fire-brigade had to
struggle hard to put out the fire. The
police personnel helped the trapped
persons save their lives.
[29]

2.

According to an eye-witness, the fire

started on the 3rd floor of the shopping
mall, perhaps due to short circuit. It
spread to other floors in no time.
However, an unconfirmed source says
that the fire was caused by the
explosion of a gas cylinder.
Those who have received burn injuries
are under treatment at the Civil
Hospital. Some of them are still
struggling for survival.
An inquiry into the incident has been
ordered by the Deputy Commissioner.
He has also announced an ex-gratia
grant for the families of the deceased
and the injured.
In order to impress upon the students
the necessity of clean surroundings, our
school organized a cleanliness drive
from 1st to 7th May this year. The
senior students of the school
participated in this campaign. They
devoted two hours each in the
mornings and the evenings to clean the
school campus. The students worked
under their house leaders. Inter-house
cleanliness competitions were planned.
It was a pleasant surprise to see the
students with dusters, brooms and
buckets. The students cleaned the
classrooms thoroughly. The woodwork
was properly dusted. Weeds were
removed from lawns. A heap of rubbish
from a pit was removed. The pit was
filled with earth and levelled. On the
last day, a paper reading contest
regarding the need for cleanliness was
also held. The Principal presided over
the concluding ceremony. The Yellow
House was declared first and awarded
a trophy.

our school on 14th November as usual.

A function was arranged in the school
hour after the morning assembly. Our
Principal underlined the importance of
the day in his brief speech. He told the
audience that the day coincided with
the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal
Nehru who was extremely fond of
children, and who wanted his birthday
to be celebrated as the childrens day.
Sh N.K. Sharma, Vice Principal of the
school, also spoke on the occasion. He
said that the children are the future of
the nation. The government and
society, he said, must take necessary
steps to make affordable education to
all children. He emphasised the need
of abolition of child labour and female
foeticide. Sweets were distributed

function.

Mr V. K. Sharma, chairman of the
school managing committee, inaugurated the sports meet. The students
participated with enthusiasm in
different events like sack-race, long
jump, high jump, musical chair race,
obstacle race, pillow fighting and tug of -war. At the end of the function, the
chief guest Mr B. N. Joshi, Deputy
Commissioner, gave away the prizes to
the winners. The titles of the best
athletes were bagged by Rajesh (XI-Sc)
and Kamini (XI-Com) among boys and
girls respectively. The chief guest

A workshop on Effective Writing was
organised by the Young Writers Club of
our school on 14th May, 20.... in the
school auditorium. Sh. Santokh Singh
Premi, eminent Punjabi story writer,
was the chief guest at the inaugural
ceremony of the workshop. In his keynote address he gave some very useful
tips to the budding writers. He
underlined the importance of reading
good literature. Almost all the writers
who took part in the workshop laid stress
on rich vocabulary and proper
expression in effective writing. A few
writers and poets read out their writings
and pointed out their unique features.
The young writers learnt a lot from the
workshop. A few student writers also
read out their stories and poems and
received critical appreciation from
experts. On the whole, the workshop was
a unique experience in itself.

Kapurthala, June 6 : The local Rotary

Club celebrated the World Environment Day yesterday by holding a
seminar and undertaking relevant
activities to promote awareness about
the environment among the common
people. The seminar which was held at
the Lions Bhawan at 10 am was
attended by a large number of citizens.
Dr K. S. Khurana, a noted environmentalist, called upon the people to take
little steps on their own to reduce global
warming. Another expert on the subject
highlighted the importance of trees in
conserving ecology.
After the seminar was over, a treeplantation campaign started. As many
as 100 saplings were planted. Then the
literature global warming, pollution
and related topics was distributed.

On the whole, the Rotary Club initiated

Last Sunday we shifted to our newly

built house in Model Town. A house
warming was performed in the
morning. We have invited all our
relatives and friends. A havan
ceremony was arranged in the lobby.
Afterwards, Father took all the guests
on a formal round of the house. He
looked very happy and proud as he
showed our house. All the guests were
full of praise of the design and style of
each and every room. Some of them
wanted to know the name of the
architect engaged by us. Then a
sumptuous brunch was served to the
guests. Some of our friends and
relatives gave suitable gifts on the
occasion. These gifts included three
excellent wall clocks, five full-size
framed sceneries, wall hangings, etc.
Mother was delighted to receive a shawl
from one of the relatives. When the
guests departed, we got busy in
arranging things in the house. It was
a memorable day for all of us.
I was lucky to visit the Taj at Agra on a
full-moon night. Along with my friend,
I entered the premises at about 10 p.m.
The sight was simply enchanting. It
sent me into a dream world. The white
dome of the Taj was shining in the cool
light of the moon. It looked like a lotus
on a pond. The four minarets around it
looked like alert sentries to guard the
exquisite beauty and grace of the
monument. Long shadows of trees fell
making the whole scene mysterious. A
number of visitors including those from
the West were enjoying the beauty of
[31]

the Taj. They were spell-bound and

wondered at the architectural beauty
of the monument. We spent about two
hours there and took some snaps with
our digital camera. When we came
home we could hardly remove the
images of the Taj from our mind.

filled all the details. I affixed two of my
latest photographs. I also attached a
copy of our ration card, as advised by
Father. Then I got the form
countersigned by Father who is also a
bonafide depositor of the bank. I handed
over the form to a bank officer. After
recording my particulars, he asked me
to deposit the money with the cashier.
I deposited < 2000, and then collected
my pass book and a cheque book from
the officer. I came back home with a

two young boys on their motorbike came
there. As the driver neared the bike to

his hand towards the woman. In a flash
he caught the gold chain, which the
woman was wearing and tugged at it
so forcefully that the chain broke and
the woman fell on the ground. She cried

SUMMARY
Tourism is one of the worlds largest
industries. It employs 100 million
people and generates immense revenue.
Tourism provides the people recreation
and change of environment. Moreover
it brings the people of different countries
together and leads to mutual
understanding and tolerance. But
tourism has certain disadvantages also.
It disrupts social cultural life. Excessive
construction of hotels disturbs
ecological balance. It pollutes culture
and adversely affects wild life. Political
disturbance poses a serious problem for
tourism.

4.

Sir
Let me express my concern over TV
programmes which are badly
affecting our youngsters. There are
many avoidable programmes being
telecast by Doordarshan these days.
These are mostly song and dance
sequences. Such programmes use
highly erotic body movements. The
dancers, both male and female, are
often clad in indecent, scanty clothes.
The vulgar gestures and sexual
overtones have a bad effect on the
minds of younger viewers.
Then some films and serials show
excess of violent behaviour. The
scenes of brutal murder and rape
should better be avoided. They can be
suggested in a subtle manner. Then
there are some ads which are simply
vulgar, and fill our minds with
feelings of disgust. The latest CocaCola ad is a glaring example of it.

Raman
Or
Sir
I am writing this letter to draw your
attention to the wretched condition of
the house occupied by me. The ceiling
of the drawing room leaks at all the
corners. As the rainy season is
drawing near, it needs immediate
repairs. Moreover the whole house
needs whitewashing. If you
remember, it is now four years when
it was white-washed.
Another problem that I want to bring
to your notice is the condition of the
water taps. They are all the time
dripping water. Moreover, the doors
and windows are being eaten by the
termite; the hinges are loose and the
doors do not shut properly. I request
you to undertake necessary repairs at
the earliest so that the rot is stemmed
before it is too late.
Your sincerely
Raman
Democracy cannot be thought of
without elections. People exercise their
rights to elect the rulers.
Unfortunately, they are so confused
now that they do not know exactly
whom they should elect. They find all
parties and leaders equally bad. No
wonder, many a time no political
party gets majority in a legislature.
[43]

The result is that elections are

frequently held in our country.
Recently Delhi saw a hung legislative
assembly. It is going to have another
election soon. Crores of rupees, thus,
get wasted. It is the public money
which goes waste in holding elections
repeatedly. India is a poor country.
The money which should be used for
building roads and bridges, power and
water supply is diverted to hold
elections for unscrupulous politicians.
Steps should be taken to avoid
frequent elections. If politicians fail to
unite and form a government in a
hung legislature, there should be no
election for five years. The President
rule seems to be the best option in such
a case. Such a step will avoid
squandering of public money on
holding elections frequently.
Or
Dear Friends ! The trip to Bakhra Dam
tomorrow, I hope, will be a memorable
one. It will be recreational as well as
educative. It will be a sort of picnic.
But all of us need to take some
precautions before we undertake the
trip. First of all, take care to wear
enough woollen clothes to ward off the
intense cold of the season. The
morning time has turned quite chilly.
Then carry with you some eatables.
The fruit will be the best. Though the
arrangement has been made for
breakfast and lunch, some homemade dishes will add to the charm of
the visit. Then all of us are to desist
from taking any photograph of the
dam, particularly in the prohibited
areas. No one should insist on boating
down the deep waters. Rather it will
be better if boating is not done at all.

SUMMARY
Artificial intelligence is linked to the
question whether robots and computers
think. The first electronic computers
were dubbed as electronic brains. They
were called high speed idiots. Even
human idiot is considered one of the
most intelligent forms on earth. Some
people can really think more than others
though people are considered thought
less or unthinking beings. The degree
of thinking varies in non-human forms.
Higher mammals show complex brain
activity. Research on artificial
intelligence scrutinizes human working
rigorously. Computers developed by
human intelligence are the worlds best
players.

Sir
I want to express my concern about
the growing cases of malaria and
dengue in the capital on the eve of
the Commonwealth Games. The
digging work for the construction
work has left behind many deep pits
and pools which are filled with rain
water. These pools and pits of water
are the breeding grounds for
mosquitoes which are responsible for
the spread of malaria and dengue
among Delhites. The news of these
diseases have alarmed the players and
guests which are expected to arrive
shortly in Delhi.
Urgent steps need to be taken to curb
the onslaught of mosquito-bitten
diseases. There should be regular
fogging of the critical areas to wipe
out colonies of mosquitoes. People
should take extra precautions to save
themselves from mosquitoes. They
should keep their surroundings clean,

Prices of petrol and diesel have
witnessed a steep hike over the years.
Due to rise in the international prices

[Teachers Handbook P.Papers Eng. XI]

of crude oil, the government feels

helpless in avoiding any hike in
petroleum products. Unluckily, any
price hike in petrol and diesel has a
cascading effect. It has a direct
bearing on the prices of essential
commodities such as vegetables, fruits,
pulses, foodgrains and many more
items. The rise in these commodities
of daily use adversely affects the poor
people. With increase in overall taxes,
the poor are finding it difficult to make
both ends meet. They feel hardpressed. The employees feel the pinch
of the price hike the most. With the
increase in the prices of petrol and
diesel, the Railways and the
transporters are likely to increase the
passenger fares. The industries which
use petroleum products in the
manufacture of various goods are also
going to increase the prices of their
products. Therefore, steps must be
taken to curb this overall price hike.
The government should desist from an
excessive increase in the prices of
petrol and diesel. It should reduce
excise duties on the export of crude
oil. Oil companies should be asked to
bear a share of the burden by
lessening their profits. Profiteers and
hoarders of essential commodities
should be severely dealt with.

peeled off. There is no grass worth
the name in the park. The
playground is now patchy and dusty.
There are no trees to provide shade
and shelter in summer. A few benches
which were fixed are now almost
broken. Therefore, my earnest
request is that the society should
constitute a committee to collect
money and rebuild the park again.
In addition to the playground, a seesaw and a swing should be installed
for the recreation of small children.
The footpath should be properly
cemented. Let us take immediate
steps to make the park worthy of our
dear children.

Meanwhile cracks were widening in the
snow. The author was lifted up with
great force and he found himself
hanging in the cleft with a rope round
his neck. With a frenzy he freed his left

matter of grave concern. Some of the
senior students residing in the hostel
are indulging in ragging of junior
students. They start their nefarious
practices after 9 p.m. when there is no
one to watch them. Some of the victims
are so terrified that they have decided
to leave the school and go back to their
homes. These senior students, some of
whom are wrestlers, harass the juniors
physically and mentally.
I hope you will look into the matter
personally and take urgent steps to
stop ragging which may bring bad

Smoking is a bad habit. It is injurious
to health. It is, however, sad that a
large number of people all over the
world smoke. Worse, even the
educated and well-awakened persons
have fallen a prey to this habit. The
spread of this evil is mainly due to its
glorification in films and T.V. serials.
The hero who lights a cigarette or
[49]

cigar and takes a few puffs with rings

of smoke rising in the air has become
an object of imitation for the
youngsters. Only a few people are
aware that smoking has many
adverse effects on mans health.
Smoking causes a number of
respiratory problems. Asthma is one
of the most dreadful of diseases caused
by smoking. Lungs of the smokers get
badly affected in due course. When
lungs are affected, one may catch T.B.
which in many cases is still fatal.
Smoking can even cause lung cancer
which leads to painful and slow death.
There are hundreds of other ailments
which are caused by smoking.
Moreover, smoking is a public
nuisance. Smokers fill the rooms with
suffocating smoke. Non-smokers also
get affected for no fault of their own.
The government has already banned
smoking in public places, but many
people can still be seen smoking in
offices, buses and trains, and on
college and school campuses. Such
people should be severely dealt with.
One wonders if the governments are
against smoking, why dont they ban
cigarette manufacturing ?
Or
Corruption has immensely harmed
our country. It is so rampant that the
fair name of our country has got
sullied. Everybody, from top to bottom,
has become corrupt or mute and
helpless victim of corruption. Top
officials of the government have
become so money-minded and corrupt
that they have forced their
subordinates to toe the line or quit. It
is a matter of shame when we daily

read about scams involving ministers,

politicians and top-ranking officers.
Many posts considered to be lucrative
are on sale. No wonder, drug mafia,
smugglers and criminals are
flourishing. Terrorists strike
anywhere and anytime at will. It is so
because such criminals can get
anything by bribing anyone, from a
clerk or a cop to a D.G.P, a minister or
a general. Unless and until people
revert to good old days and values like
simplicity and honesty, no law can end
corruption.

Dear Sir
Let me express my concern about the
insanitary conditions prevailing in
our city through the columns of your
popular newspaper.
There is hardly any area in our city
which is neat and clean. The open
garbage dump before the entrance of
Nikko Park in Model Town, a popular
place for recreation for children and
their parents, is a testimony to the
carelessness of the civic authorities.
Heaps of garbage, dust and rubbish
could be seen everywhere. Needless
to say, they are breeding grounds for
flies and mosquitoes which cause
epidemics like malaria, dengue and
many other diseases. The drainage
system does not function properly. All
roads and streets get flooded within

5.

minutes of rain. Moreover, the

sweepers are careless and rude. They
rarely do their duty because they have
no fear of any authority because of
their strong union. Whenever any
alternative way of sweeping and
cleaning is planned they go on strike
and cause trouble for all the residents.
The authorities must take immediate
and effective steps for the cleanliness
of the city, otherwise epidemics would
break out jeopardising the health of
the common people.

Money and happiness seldom go
together. It is a misconception that
money
and
happiness
are

[Teachers Handbook P.Papers Eng. XI]

proportionately related to each other.

Had it been so, all the rich people
should have been contented and
happy and all the poor people and
malcontented and miserable. But it is
not so. The reality is that many rich
people are extremely unhappy on
several counts. Some have no
satisfaction with what they have.
They want to grab more and more.
What they do not or cannot obtain
makes them unhappy. Some are
unhappy because of poor health.
Others are unhappy because of their
unworthy children. On the other
hand, all the poor people are not
unhappy. There are many among the
poor who are contented with what
they have. The reality is that material
possessions do not and cannot
guarantee happiness. Health is real
wealth. A chronic unhealthy richman
can readily agree to exchange his
place with a happy and healthy poor
person. Then stable and good human
relationships ensure our happiness.
Good moral values are a must to prop
us up. Last but not least, limited needs
and desires and contentment are more
important than material prosperity for
lasting happiness.

Through the columns of your

awaken the readers about the wrong
teaching methods being followed in
schools. The techniques adopted these
days encourage rote learning.
Students are asked to memorise
maximum number of facts and
figures. The habit of original thinking

I strongly feel that this technique
which encourages cramming is going
to be very harmful for the future of
the students. When we send our

should have a balanced development

It is the duty of all those persons in

Drug-Addiction
The abuse of drugs is now a major
problem that our country is facing.
Young boys and girls are virtually
being crippled by the spread of drugs.
To start with the addict takes a fill to
alleviate pain or get a thrill at the
persuasion of his friends. Quickly he
develops a mental dependence to the
thrill. Gradually he becomes
physically dependent on the drug. He
requires increasing does daily. In the
absence of drug he shows withdrawal
symptoms. Ultimately the addiction
becomes a habit.
If we study the lives of drug addicts,
we see that they are completely self
centred people. They care least for
others. The consciousness of a drug
addict is clouded and he loses will
power, concentration, memory and
judgement capacity. When a drug
addict is in need of money, he does
not hesitate to steal or indulge in
antisocial activities. More drugs, more
crime shows the graph. A new addict
develops friendship with fellow addicts
and slowly enters the so called drug
structure. Once he enters this drug
structure he is regarded as an
outcaste. It is seen that lack of healthy
education, uninspiring lectures by
teachers, unhealthy books and
cinema are responsible for degrading
the youth and leading them to
addiction.
Or
Dignity of Uniform
Uniforms are impersonal clothes. They
mark the part that people play in the
drama of life. They distinguish a
postman from a policeman, the air
hostess from the mere passenger or

the school prefect from the rank and

file. Uniforms glorify the wearer, who
stands out in public catching the eye
by the splendour of his attire.
It is not easy to know what the
students think about the uniform.
There is no doubt that the first
uniform is put on with pride. It is the
badge of success. It advertises the
triumph of having earned admission
in a new school. But this warmth does
not last long. In two three years the
boys and girls feel fed up with it. They
want to wear something much more
glamorous. They begin to resent the
wearing of uniform.
But we must realize that uniform
helps in establishing a spirit of unity
and co-ordination in the school. It
makes pupils look neater and tidier.
It also enables them to be recognised

as members of the school outside its

walls. Uniforms do not suppress
