only the arrival of a beautiful warrior boy saves Mio and
her best friend, Jack, from the monsters claws. Their
savior, Shinobu, has been trapped in the sword for five

extra strength and speed by the katana, yields to rage

FAREWELLS
Now that all matters of business have been discussed, I thought you would wish to return home. We
shall summon your other companions from their rest,
and a new rupture from my throne to your place of residence in the mortal realm will be readied.
In other words: Get lost, humans. Fine by me.
Your Majesty is very thoughtful, I said. Thank you
again.
The king inclined his head once, stood, and was gone.
I blinked. Either he was very, very fast, or hed just gone
invisible. Something to bear in mind for the future . . .
Then I saw Jack and Rachel heading down the green
terraces toward us and Rachel was walking under her
own power, without hanging on to Jack. Long, damp hair
fell around her face in thick curls that the world usually
didnt get to see. There was a faint flush in her goldenbrown cheeks, and the blank stare from earlier was gone.
She looked better than Jack, even, since Jack still had a
black eye. Relief brought a huge grin to my face. The fox
spirits medicine and music had done an amazing job.
Hiya, She-Ra! Jack called cheerily, dodging around
a couple of giggling Kitsune.
Hey! I ran to meet them. How are you ?
The words choked off as the sight of Rachels neck hit
me like a hammer to the gut.
The Kitsune had given her some dark trousers and a
clean white shirt. The last time I saw her, the shirt had

Whats happening to her? I cried out over the wailing. Cant someone help her?
Hikaru didnt even look at me. He lifted his face to
the canopy of trees above and howled.
I felt Shinobus hand grasping mine, trying to pull me
toward the rift. Shaking my head, I yanked myself free. I
couldnt leave. They needed help!
The kings tails flicked in my direction. It was as if a
massive hand had scooped me up and tossed me straight
at the waiting blackness of the open rupture. I tumbled
inside. Shinobu landed half on top of me with an oof.
Wait! I shouted, struggling to get up.
It was too late. The light had vanished and the rupture closed.
The Kitsune Kingdom was gone.
Klara Wozniak pulled the little cloth cap off her head in a puff
of our and stuffed it into her locker with one hand, swiftly
undoing her tight French braid with the other. Long, curling
strands of dark hair fell around her face, and she shook them
out, sighing with relief.
You think youre in a shampoo commercial or something? Sharon, the other bakers assistant, sneered as she
walked into the back room.
Sharons blond hair was about three inches long, raggedlooking, and tipped with orange after an ill-fated home-dyeing

out of the bakerys rear door into the small back street the
business shared with a book/coffee shop and a pub. It was
frosty cold, but the sky Klara could see between the roofs was
primrose-yellow, tinged with baby blue. It was going to be a
beautiful day. Even the strong smell of burning and rot in the
air probably from the Dumpster couldnt ruin her mood.
Hey, Klara! Sharon shouted, shoving the door open just
as Klara was about to slip past the Dumpster and out onto the
main road. You didnt wipe down its your turn.
No, it is not. Klara turned back reluctantly. It is yours. I
did it yesterday.
Youre always skiving off, Sharon whined without,
Klara noted, bothering to deny it.
You would get your own work done faster if you spent less
time worrying about mine, Klara said rmly. She was already
reaching into her pocket for her mobile. Stephen would be
waiting.
Sharon muttered something nasty under her breath about
immigrants. Klara hesitated just for a second, the urge to
respond rising up like bile in the back of her throat. She bit it
back. Shes not worth it. Shes not worth it . . .

e have to go back, I said. I reached the livingroom wall, spun around, and paced back to the
fireplace. We have to. Somethings horribly wrong there.
The king sent us through the rift himself. I do not
think they want our help, Shinobu said, very gently,
from his place in the corner by the bookshelf.
Maybe not, but theyre our friends, and you dont
just . . . leave your friends to die.
Come on, Mimi, Jack piped up from the sofa.
Theyre Kitsune. Theyre not that easy to kill.
Something was really wrong, I insisted, hitting the
fireplace with the flat of my hand and then pacing away
again. You didnt see that girl just lying there. You didnt
hear the noise they were making
No, but Ive been listening to you rant about it for the
past ten minutes, she interrupted. Look, dont you think
hers. Stop it! she shouted. Just stop it! This isnt helping. Mio, dont shout at Rachel shes been through
enough. Its not fair.
I shut my mouth with a snap. Rachel grinned. The
expression congealed as Jack turned on her. And you,
dont start bossing people around and giving orders. You
are not in charge here. Its Mios sword, and she saved
your life with it. She gets to make the decisions.
Wrong. The parents left me in charge, Rachel
snarled. Which means I get to make the decisions about
what goes on in this house.
I said stop it! Jack grabbed a handful of her own
hair and tugged. This isnt getting us anywhere.
Fine! Rachel screeched, her voice hitting a pitch
that raked up every fine hair on the back of my neck.
Take her side, then. Whatever!
She marched to the door into the hall and threw it
open, turning back at the last moment to stab me with a
vicious look. Her narrowed eyes glinted in the sunlight.
She was so furious, they looked almost yellow. Then the
door slammed behind her.
Jack grabbed me into a crushing hug. I hugged her
back, feeling her shoulders jerk just a little, exactly like
mine were. Itll be OK. Ill talk to her. I got your back,
Maverick, she whispered.
Oh my God, I managed to mumble. Seriously? Top
Gun quotes are never going to be cool, Jack.
