Dear Reader,
Welcome to Brills 2015 Philosophy catalog in which we present our
most recent publications in the field of Philosophy. We are pleased to
announce a new book series and two new journals, and the acquisition
of Editions Rodopi, in addition to numerous new volumes and issues in
existing book series and journals.
This catalog features two new journals: Journal of Chinese Humanities,
the English-language extension of Literature, History and Philosophy
(Wen Shi Zhe). The content is not restricted to one aspect of Chinese
culture but rather spans important topics within the fields of Chinese
history, philosophy, and literature. This journal is freely accessible for
individuals throughout 2015. For more information see p. 5. Another
addition to our journal publication program is Philosophia Reformata
with contributions that contain philosophical reflection in relation
to the Christian tradition. Together with our other journals they
constitute the vast collection of journals with Brill, on both classical and
contemporary Philosophy. This journal can be found on p. 11.
In 2014 Brill acquired Editions Rodopi, the Dutch publisher in
the field of Humanities. The acquisition includes a large list of
Philosophy publications, including twelve book series and one
journal, Contemporary Pragmatism. A listing of Rodopis most recent
publications on Philosophy can be viewed on pp. 40-44.

New Pauly Online features the complete sets of both Brills New
Pauly and Metzlers Der Neue Pauly. The encyclopedic coverage
and high academic standard of the work, the interdisciplinary and
contemporary approach and clear and accessible presentation
have made the New Pauly the unrivalled modern reference
work for the ancient world. Fifteen volumes (Antiquity, 1-15) are
devoted to Greco-Roman antiquity and cover more than two
thousand years of history, ranging from the second millennium
BC to early medieval Europe. Special emphasis is given to the
interaction between Greco-Roman culture on the one hand,
and Semitic, Celtic, Germanic, and Slavonic culture, and ancient
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam on the other hand. Five volumes
(Classical Tradition, I-V) are uniquely concerned with the long and
influential aftermath of antiquity and the process of continuous
reinterpretation and revaluation of the ancient heritage, including
the history of classical scholarship. New Pauly Online is the unique
dual-language online version of this standard reference work for
students and scholars.

In the medieval, late medieval and premodern world of Islam, Muslims, Jews and
Christians constituted a unique cultural
and intellectual commonality. They
shared a language, Arabic (and at times
Persian), which they spoke in daily life and
which they also used for their theological,
philosophical, legal and scientific writings.
Moreover, they often read the same books,
so that a continuous, multi-dimensional
exchange of ideas, texts, and forms of
discourse was the norm rather than the
exception. While this has been amply
demonstrated for some selected periods
and regions, scholars usually opt for a
one-dimensional approach with an (often
exclusive) focus on either Muslim, Jewish or
Christian authors and their writings.

An Introduction
to the Social and
Political Philosophy
of Bertolt Brecht
revolution and Aesthetics
Anthony SquIerS
Jewish Thought,
Utopia,
and Revolution
Squiers monograph makes the case that Brecht is the Missing Link in
Western Discourse, the link that connects philosophy to literature to
theater to politics to common sense[It] is an important contribution
to Brecht scholarship and follows a tradition established by Roland
Barthes and extended by Fredric JamesonBarthes, Jameson, and
Squiers see Brecht and dont stare at him (Glotzen ist nicht Sehen!).
This Trinity sees a type of Socrates Complex, a Socratex if you will,
i.e. an entity (Brecht) that navigates, mediates, illuminates the most
important ideas, philosophies, ideologies, histories, mythologies, and
theories of the Western Mind without trying to make Brecht into some
type of commodity, or answer. This is a difficult and necessary measure,
but Squiers pulls it off with critical rigor in a lucid, cohesive, and
engaging intellectual-writing style. Squiers re-discovers a Brecht that
we desperately need and makes it look easydialectically speaking.

Over the last few years there has been a resurgent
interest in various scientific disciplines in Poppers
arguments. To gain a greater appreciation of Poppers
scientific arguments, they need to be viewed in relation
to his broader philosophy and where this stands within
the history of ideas. This book aims to take seriously
those aspects of Poppers writings that have received
less attention and wherein he advanced metaphysical,
speculative, mystical-poetic, aesthetic and Platonic
arguments. Such arguments are crucial for an appreciation
of his scientific and political writings. I argue that Popper,
much like Wittgenstein previously has been misconstrued
as an Anglo-analytic philosopher. This book provides an
interpretation of Poppers mature philosophy within his
Central-European intellectual context. The aim of which
is to open up a fruitful line of investigation into Poppers
thought that I hope would continue over the coming
years.

Philosophy of Peace
(POP), in conjunction with
Concerned Philosophers
for Peace, explores sociopolitical and ethical
perspectives on modern
warfare, peacemaking,
and conflict resolution,
including the many forms
of domestic and global
violence, such as sexism,
racism, and classism.

Indirect Politics
Peace Philosophy
and Public Life
This book argues that peace must
be a public thing. Philosophers of
peace have long worked for public
results. Opposing nuclear weapons,
organizing the disinherited,
challenging violence in the status
quo, such are the legacies of
engaged philosophers. Our authors
remember these examples as we
confront modern challenges such as
immigration, police interrogation,
or mental health.

Examining Brechts strategies for disrupting routine modes of cognition,
as well as the social ontology embedded in Brechts opposition of
individual being to species being, Squiers takes us far beyond narrowly
aestheticist analyses of Brechts famous alienation effect. This is an
important book, of interest to philosophers and students of drama alike.

This is the third volume of the new series Social, Political, &
Legal Philosophy and it deals with the relationship between
Law and The Philosophy of Action.
In this volume a number of legal issues are illuminated by
resource to the analysis of mental concepts. Issues in Criminal
Law, Contract Law, Acceptance of Legal Systems, and the
nature of Legal Norms are some of the main issues dealt in
the papers that constitute the volume. Conceptual analysis is
used and new overtures are made into current findings in the
Cognitive Sciences. All of this results in illuminating accounts
that throw new light on traditional fundamental legal issues.
This volume is a precursor in the powerful theorizing of
the Cognitive Sciences that is being brought to bear in
the Philosophy of Mind and in the theory of Law, and this
theorizing will increase in the coming years.

Against this background the book shows the effect of
Darwin on three important fields: the perception of
landscape in major writers (Zola, Lawrence, Jacobsen,
Benn and Brecht) before 1920; the portrayal of wild life,
as revealed in bird-painting; and the understanding of
the relationship between the human body and character.

The book brings together for the first time Darwins The
Expression of Emotion with the work of major European
novelists (Eliot, Gutzkow and Freytag), focusing on
the place of the older understandings contained in
physiognomy, which Darwin challenged, on the portrayal
of ethnicity, and on debates about acting, including for
the young Brecht.

Research4Life
Research4Life is the collective name for four public private partnerships that
seek to help achieve the UNs Millennium Development Goals. These programs
have given people at more than 6000 institutions in over 100 countries and
territories in the developing world free or low cost access to more than 35,000
peer-reviewed international scientific journals, books and databases provided
by the worlds leading academic and professional publishers.
INASP
Brill offers its journal content through INASP, an international development
charity working with a global network of partners to improve access, production
and use of research information and knowledge, so that countries are equipped
to solve their development challenges.
Association of Commonwealth Universities
Through the Low Cost Journals Scheme members of the Association of
Commonwealth Universities (ACU) in developing countries have access
to Brill print journals at deep-discount prices.
Publishers for Development
Brill supports Publishers for Development, a forum for information and
discussion around the importance of access to information for development.
Brills Adopt a Library Program
Brills Adopt a Library program each year donates a collection of books to one
or two libraries primarily in developing countries. Libraries actively approach
Brill or are recommended by Brill authors and editors. In the choice of libraries
Brill seeks to match the collection with the focus of the library or the university
they are part of. For more information, please visit brill.com/brills-adopt-libraryprogram
Brill recommends Author Aid for Authors in Developing Countries
AuthorAID is a global online network that provides support, mentoring,
resources, and training for researchers in developing countries. Academics
in developing countries that would like to receive coaching in their research
or academic writing for publication are encouraged to sign up with the Author
Aid network. Brill authors/editors also have the option to coach or mentor
a colleague in a developing country towards publication.
