Welcome to the third community newsletter of the year and
our fourth newsletter for the term. As you can see from the
cover we had our annual school cross country event yesterday.
Thank you to all those who helped out and thank you to Barry
Brown for allowing us to run across his land.
This term in the afternoons, the year 5-8s have been working
on finding solutions to local school issues. The issues students
have been working on have been:

Creative furniture solutions that improve our

environment for learning

Developing challenging physical playground equipment

for the older students

Improving the visibility and promotion of the school at

the road side

Improving our school website to make it a vibrant and

informative place to visit.
Having genuine issues to solve and being part of the decision
making and change process at school has been good for the
students. They have had to conduct research into existing
solutions, think about budgets, materials. Check out some the
student ideas in this newsletter.
This year Kaihere School has been involved in working towards establishing a Community of Schools, with Hauraki
Plains College, and schools such as Ngatea, Kerepehi,
Waitakaruru and many other Plains schools. This community
of schools is being considered under the Governments somewhat controversial Investing in Educational Success (IES)
initiative. Our school, and those involved, are interested in
providing the best learning opportunities for students in this
district. This has given me an opportunity to meet with and
share ideas with other school leaders and I have already had
some fruitful and enlightening meetings with College staff.
One of the questions that keeps cropping up is what
constitutes really good learning in this modern age? There has
been enormous focus on Numeracy and Literacy because of
National Standards (possibly to the detriment of other learning
areas). I believe that Numeracy and Literacy are crucial, but I
also believe creativity, the ability to learn and explore through
experiences, and the arts are also incredibly valuable. What do
you think?
As a community of parents, business people, employers, what
do you think our young people should be learning to take
districts such as Hauraki, the country and the world into the
future? I am always keen to hear feedback, so parent or not, if
you have an opinion drop me an e-mail or give me a call.
Wrap-up for the last weeks of Winter and remember that
Spring is just around the corner.
Regards
Terry Casey

26th Annual Fireworks Display
On Saturday 31 October 2015 our club will be
holding its 26th Annual Fireworks Display at
Paeroa Domain. For our 25th Annual Display in
2014 we increased the scale of the fireworks
display and we have decided to maintain that
standard with our suppliers to include some new
displays. We aim to provide a night of family fun
with a great fireworks display at an affordable
price.. Our gate charge remains at $15 for a family
ticket which covers 2 adults and 2 children. We
use the services of a longstanding Auckland
fireworks display provider and we also have food
stalls and other entertainment on site. NO
ALCOHOL OR PERSONAL FIREWORKS are
allowed on the grounds and this assists us in
making this a very enjoyable night of family fun.
This year our Display falls the same night as
Halloween and we will advise in due course as to
what we will be doing to encourage children to
wear their Halloween outfits.

Busy times in Mangawhero room (Years 6-8). Please enjoy reading

about some of the many learning activities we have been engaged in.
WRITING

READING

We have been looking at writing in the style of a

newspaper report. Here are some excerpts from student news articles.
Cecil the Lion
Palmer is an avid big game hunter who learnt how to
hunt at the young age of five and has been hunting
ever since. This is not the first time he has been in
trouble for his hunting. In 2008 he faced prison time
for lying to a federal agent about the killing of a black
bear. He was also profiled in the New York times after
he killed a trophy elk in California. Palmer's wife
(Tonette) also has an interest in hunting and hasn't
been seen since Palmer was accused of killing Cecil.
Palmer himself has received considerable negative
response because of his actions.

We have a class of really keen readers. Here are some

of the books we are loving in Mangawhero room at
the moment:
Paper Towns by John Green.
Shontelle has read this and Molly is reading this. It
was a good mature book. I liked it
because it was funny and had some
mysteries.

Nathan has been reading Driving a

Bargain by Fleur Beale.
I reckon this book has really great
humour. It has a
great storyline with
good characters.. I am now reading
Slide the Corner by the same author Nathan.
Damian has been reading another
Shark Attack
Fleur Beale book, My Life of
Australian Mick Fanning, 3 time world champion surf- Crime.

Another group has been looking at furniture concepts.

Here is a great idea they want to build and trial in the

Tube seat.
What is required is a tractor inner-tube, strips of fabric, and a cushion. This is a great way to make cheap,
comfortable classroom furniture for reading. Another great idea this team has discovered is that of
guttering for book shelves. If anyone has some old (but good condiCultural
tion) plastic guttering, could they
please donate it to the school.
