AIR CONDITIONING
INTRODUCTION
The air conditioning system supplies airflow to the cockpit and passenger cabin for ventilation and cabin pressurization. It also controls
the temperature and decreases the humidity of the cockpit and cabin
air.
DESCRIPTION
The figure AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM - MAIN COMPONENT
LOCATIONS shows the location of the main components of the
system.
The figure and table AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM - CONTROLS
AND INDICATORS show the positions and functions of the controls
and indications.
The AIR CONDITIONING includes this (these) subsystem(s):
DISTRIBUTION ................................................................. (21-20)

AIRCRAFT
MAINTENANCEMANUAL
COMPONENTS
DISTRIBUTION (21-20)

The distribution subsystem controls the quantity of conditioned air

supplied to the cockpit and passenger cabin.

The loss of the air conditioning system causes decompression of the

cabin and the loss of fresh air supply through the ECUs. If it occurs,
the emergency ram air system (Ref. 21-25) operates automatically to
supply secondary fresh air to the occupied compartment.
The figure AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM - OPERATION shows the
relationship between the main subsystems.

PRESSURIZATION CONTROL (21-30)

The pressurization control system keeps minimum cabin altitudes,

with minimum rates of cabin altitude change during transitions, with
minimum crew work load.
COOLING (21-50)

The cooling system receives hot bleed air from the engines or APU
(Ref. 36-00) and supplies cooled air to the distribution system (Ref.
21-20).
TEMPERATURE CONTROL (21-60)

The temperature control system adjusts the environment in the

airplane, subdividing it into two temperature controlled zones: the
cockpit and the passenger cabin.
OPERATION
Two Environmental Control Units (ECUs) control the cooling and/or
heating effects in the pressurized environment. The pneumatic system
(Ref. 36-00) or a ground support equipment supplies pneumatic power
to the system.
Each ECU has a modular configuration and independent digital and
analog temperature controls (Ref. 21-60).
The ECUs are attached to the fuselage with rods and brackets.
Some of these rods have flexible shock mounts at one end. This
helps decrease vibration on the fuselage.
