THE

BEST

YEAR

: .V >;

7 1974

For many people 1973 was the year of disappointments and trials. There were
all kinds of crises and i t seems that those crises did not end in 1973.

But in our lives and work there were no disapgointmeQts-_at all

there were

"no "crises "-"there were blessings and viStbrire'ST'^

We were very busy all the timet

In 1973 we were in touch with people in Poland, Czechoslovakia,

Germany,

England, Argentina, Paraguay, Australia, Canada and many other countries,

sending them messages of Christ through correspondence.

We preached also through 3 radio stations to thousands of people behind the
Iron Curtain and here in the States.

In summer we were able to make a glorious trip to Poland, Czechoslovakia,

East and West Germany and preach to thousands of people.

We helped to finance several weeks of Christian Service Camp
in Poland,
The Camp was a tremendous success with many responses to the Gospel invi
tation.

Like never before we were able to publish lots of literature, song books
and poem books and send them to Poland and other countries.
I preached 150 sermons, led 15 Faith Promise Rallies, visited many chur ches, preached at Rallies and attended conventions.

At the end of the year on D^j^^^2-nd our daughter Yvonne, who finished her
studies at Milligan College, was married to John Marr, a ministerial stu
dent at Milligan College.
.
And then we had glorious services in Baltimore during the Christmas Season
and New Year.

Indeed we can say together with Davidt "Bless the Lord, o my soul: and all
-

1 -

that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, o my soul, and forget
not all his benefits"

Psl.

103tl-2.

It is almost impossible to count our many blessings, and now, as we

entered

the New Year, we are not looking for crises but we are looking for more

vic

tories and achievements in building His Great Body - the Church.

We are so much blessed and achieved so much not because of our skill

and

a-

bilities but because of the grace of God who helps us

all the time,
be
cause you constantly pray for us and help us financially to carry the task of
our ministry.

Thank you very, very much!

"COMMITTEE ON OSTRODA PROJECT"

>^ct. 1, l973;j-'7 men met in our home for a special meeting.

After a lengthy

^ discuaairori and reports it was decided to establish a special "Committee

on '

'"^troda Project" in order to solicit, receive and forward funds to Poland for
the purpose of constructing and operating a Senior Citizen?', Home and Chris
tian Camp in Poland.'

1. The Committee is composed of 9 men: Paul Bajko, George Bajenski, Boleslaw

Winnik, Kenneth Meade, Desmond Tease, William Walker, Charles Steele, Robert
Philips and Max Ward Randall.

2. Kenneth Meade serves as secretary-treksurer for the Committee.

3. This Committee will meet once a

year.

-2-1

4, The money designated to Ostroda Project will be forwarded to Poland through

an official chanel the Polish American Agency.

5, Paul Bajko, George Bajenski and Boleslaw Winnik will be working closely
with this Committee.

6, The Christian people in Poland have to be informed of this Committee.

7, Money received by George Bajenski and Paul Bajko designated toward Ostroda
Project will not be deposited in Ring the Bell or Department of Missions ac
counts but with endorsement will be forwarded directly to the special Commi
ttee and receipts will be Issued by this Committee.
8, The Committee is incorporated for that purpose.
Because Department of Missions in the person of Bro. Paul Bajko is engaged in
wide missionary activities in Poland as well in U.S. and in many other under
takings liket publishing of literature, bulding and remodeling church
buil
dings, support of preachers, etc. what requires thousands of dollars, as

shown in our annual report, it was suggested that G^oi^e B^enski will give
more of his time for promotion and raising money for OstroSa fro^ect.
The Ostroda Project will require thousands of dollars but we believe that it
is a very important project which will help much in the growth of the Polish
work.

Please send your special contributions toward this project tot

LETTER

"Warsaw, Dec. 28.73.

FROM

KOSTEK

JAKONIUK

Dear Bro. Bajko, dear Brethren in Christ. Greetings in

the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

As the old year is coming to the end and New Year is approaching we lift up
our hearts to God with thankfulness and praise for His wonderful care of His
children and for the blessings we experienced here in Poland.

We have had a succesful 6 weeks camp program in Ostroda, where many

young

people from all over the country have come and learned much from the Word of
God, had a fellowship with each other anl also with the Christian
young
people from America .

During the evening evangelistic meetings aver 40 young people have accepted
Christ as their personal Saviour. We are grateful to God that He s t i l l saves the lost.

Finally the last fall we received from thse government permission for
property to be signed on the Churches namse and for making the project

that
for

the Old Folks Home.

The coming year 1974 will be a year of malciilg legal papers and of making the

final project of the Old Folks Home, and the project of the campus

The morning devotions In the camp

building activities will be there. We will plan building for 1975, If the

papers will be ready early enough then we will put a fence around the pro
perty. It will be an expensive work to do. Maybe we will be able to get
the money for the fence or at least part of it from the church treasury.

For this summer's camp

We still need about 70

air matrasses and about 60 blankets for the young
blanket with them but in the cold nights they need

another one. Both, air matrasses and the blankets cost about $ 5.- each.
We are not planing to buy all of them at once, but we would like to add
each year at least some. This year at least 20 blankets and 40 air
mat-

We have opportunity to buy and distribute the Bibles, New Testaments

and

other Christian literature. If you could help we would ask you

$ 100,00
for that purpose. We could use about 50 cassettes tapes for recording the
best songs, messages, youth programs to use them during the visiting
of
sick, old people who can't make to church, etc. These will be distributed 5
cassettesto a

Christian worker to those who are able to use them in their

work. One cassette costs $2.-.Some areas don'thave the cassette tape recor
der and they are expensive, about $70.00, It would be good to buy
at
least one for Muratyn.

Because we have just few workers, and preachers in some Churches don't

have theological education, they need help, so those who are able to help

sometimes

the public transportation but most of the time we use the few cars

we do havei

We have done much visiting churches holding evangelistic meetings. We visited

many radio listeners, visited sick and old, also those who are interested in

the Gospel. We have come many times to Ostroda to prepare the place for

the

camp etc. We distributed many Bibles, New Testaments and other Christian

li

terature.

Shortly speaking our needs here for 1974 are more or less?
1. Preparing and making documents in Ostroda - $ 500.-, 2, Two cabins - $200.-

3. Air matrasses - $ 200.-.

4. Blankets - $ 100,-, 5, Some additional equip

ment for the camp plus running of the camp in 1974 - $ 500,-. 6. Cassette ta
pes $ 100.-. 7. Bibles - $ 100,-,
We thank you very much for being interested in our work and our needs here in
Poland. May the Lord bless and reward you abundantly out of His riches above.

We ask you for your prayers and plaase

give our warm Christian greetings

to

all who love the Lord, Yours in Christ, Kostek Jakoniuk,"

Note from Paul Bajko,

Here Is a great opportunity to any Sunday School, Church or individual to help

brethren in Poland with spreading the Gospel through these special projects.
If you decide to help, issue your checks in the name "Committe on Ostoda Prolect".

Kostek Jakonluk

Many hundreds souls were won for Christ because of this ministry.
It was our great privilege to visit Poland several times and have great fel

lowship with the Brethren there and preach the Gospel*

In the last years many American preachers and Christians visited Poland
were impressed with the work and dedication of Christians.

and

For many years I had in mind to invite officially a group of Polish preachers
to visit USA, to see the work here, to have fellowship with American Brethren
and to thank in person American Christians for their vital interest and sup
port of the Polish work.

Last September at the annual meeting the Guidance Committee approved the pro
ject and we proceeded with our plans.
Invitations were issued for 7 persons: 6 preachers and one very dedicated
Christian lady - children and youth worker.

The Polish government approved

our invitations and Lord's willing they

will

come.

Kostek Jakonluk, who was brought by us together with George Bajenski to

USA
in 1958 to be'trained at Eastern Christian College and Lincoln Christian Col.
and Alina Lewczuk will come In the beginning of June in order to visit
Churches and present the Polish work.

more

The rest of delegation in persons of Jerzy Sacewicz, Konstanty Sacewicz, Stanislaw Krakiewicz, Piotr Bronowlcki and Kazimierz Muranty will arrive June 30,

With the whole group we plan to visit several churches In Florida and
then
will devlde them in two groups and take to Routes on the way to the North Ame>
rlcan Convention in Anaheim, Calif. We plan for them to stop in churches and
speak on the way to California.
They will appear at NACC and give greetings to the American Churches from the
Polish Churches.
-

Then from Anaheim we will travel to Mexico City to attend The World Conven
tion of Churches of Christ - Christian Churches.

In August the Polish Brethren will meet with the Guidance Committee of

the

Department of Missions and with the Coanmittee on Ostroda Project to discuss

the work in Poland,

Each preacher will take time to visit his living-link church in order
thank in person for support and give report about his work.

to

September 1st they will depart back to Poland to their posts to preach

the

Gospel.

We plan big and we ask for your prayers and help.

1974

After graduation from Eastern Christian Institute in Orange N, J, 1952 and

Mllligan College in Tennessee 1953, I began my ministry in the newly
orga
nized Department of Missions at the Eastern Christian Institute in in July
1954.

The

work of the Department of Missions was outlined in seven points by

the

Trustees of the Institute,

With fear and trembling but with great confidence and trust in my Lord,

began to work

Now, when I look back, I see in everything the Lord's guidance, presence and
power.

In those 20 years many young boys in America and in Poland were challenged
to dedicate their lives to the ministry of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and
my
heart is full of joy when in my travels I meet many dedicated young ministers
who tell me that they were challenged to go into the ministry in this or another camp, at this or another rally, where I was preaching.
My heart is filled with thanks to God when I see all foreign students, whom
we brought to this country to be trained for the ministry, serving the Lord.
I thank God when I see souls accepting Christ because of the Gospel preached
directly or indirectly through those preachers and workers whom we
support
on the mission field.

It is hard to describe my joy when for the first time I went with Dela to Poland in 1960. We met there many dedicated preachers but with many problems
on thsir hands and short of everything, I sat down with them and reviewed
their work, the conditions of the churches and their possibilities.
After our return to U.S. we plundged ourselves in the work?

/ We provided them with Bibles, Christian literature, material for children,

-

1 -

'

...

W'i

Our young people In fellowship with youns Catholic priests

and young people with Sunday School material, song books and churches with
doctrinal material.

We started to remodel and repair old houses of worship, we build new ones,
purchased grouds for the Christian Service Camp etc.
All the time we put much emphasis on teaching and preaching and, what a
difference there was between our 1960 and 1973 visit, when we met with the
old and young preachers, and then on the Lord's Day everywhere
we
met
around the Lord's Table,

How it thrilled our hearts when we heard the singing of youth and children,
and testimonies of young and old people, and saw them baptised into Christ.
Our radio ministry has a tremendous impact. We have thousands of

liste

ners in Poland and other countries, we receive many letters with requests
for Bibles and other Christian literature; questions about salvation
are
being asked.
We receive letters from people and pastors, ministers and priests from every denomination begging for song books, poem books and other literature,
thanking us for opening their eyes and drawing them closer to Christ.

In this country the Slavic Church of Christ in Baltimore was established,

-

where people of 4 or 5 different nationalities are united In one glorious fa

mily of God's children as a greatest testimony of God's power.
When we see all what was and is being done In the name of the Lord,
praise His Holy Name and our hearts are singing: "How great Thou art I"

we

Did we have failures and disappointments? 0, yes, many of them, but, even
In that time we praised God because He tested our faith and our faithfulness
and taught us a great lesson of trust. But all that was so small In compa rlson with victories, because even one soul won to Christ wipes out all dlsappoltments and failures.
We thank God for the wondrful

American Christians who never let us

down

and always bring us to God's throne of grace in their prayers and with their
sacrificial support help us build a Glorious Church of Christ. Thank YOU!

September, 1974,
Beloved Friends In Christ*

The busiest of summers is almost over.

Christian lady spent with us 62 days.

Six Polish preachers

There was no time for rest or talks. Almost from the first day

and
we

one
were

plunged into a very busy schedule of visiting churches across the

land.
Our Polish preachers and Alice Lewczuk spoke in 70 churches, appeared at 2
Conventions* The North American Christian Convention In Anaheim, Calif, and
the World Convention of Churches of Christ in Mexico City, spoke in
two

Christian Service Camps, visited campuses of several Bible Colleges,

and

took part during the first chapel and convocation service at Eastern Chris
tian College, and have been at several Rallies.
We also visited Brother and Sister K. Jaroshevich, who began the work

of
in
Va. Beach and attend Aragona Church of Christ. There were many tears of joy
the Churches of Christ in Poland In 1921 and now in their old age live

at the reunion because the Polish Brethren have not seen Bro. and
Jaroshevich since 1948,

Sister

The visit in USA was for our Polish brethren a truly great experience,They
saw our beautiful land, beautiful church buildings, attended for the first
time American services, Sunday Schools, Youth meetings, DVBS, Camps,Kallies,
prayer meetings, chapel services etc.
They learned many things but also through their presence,
preaching and
talks they contributed much to our churches in U.S.
They also attended and took part in the annual meeting of the Guidance Com
mittee of the Department of Hissions.
The day before their departure they spent in our Slavic Church of Christ in
Baltimore in services and fellowship and that day during the worship
hour

they surprised me and my wife by presenting to us beautiful bouquet of flo

wers and expressing their thanks and appreciation for bringing them to this
country and taking care of them. It moved us deeply.
For us personally It was a great privilege to host

those brethren, to talk

with them, to hear reports of their work and talk about their problems

and

help them with our advise and prayers, also to take them to churches and
share the Good News of Jesus Christ In many places.

It will be hard to list all churches and all people who helped us to bring
them to this country but I would like to express our great appreciation and
thanks to ALL of YOU, wonderful Christians, for your prayers, concern, love,
hospitality and offerings.

"Dear Bro. Bajko. Peace be unto you!

I would like to inform you that we ar
rived back in Poland safely. The Lord was with us. 0, how much we cherish the
memories of the great time we had in U.S.
Here we found much work to be done. First, as you said, we had to straighten
out the matter of Ostroda, so, myself, Bro. L. Lewczuk and Bro.
N. Jakoniuk
went to Bro. Kuba and had a long talk with him and he signed the
necessary

papers in order to transfer the Ostroda property to the Church.

/NOTE: Ostroda property - Christian Service Camp, was purchased in 1970

in

the name of an individual - a Christian farmer, becau'se at that time, accor ding to the Polish law, land could be purchased anly by the farmer. So it took
long time to prepare and draw necessary papers and obtain permission from the
government to transfer the property to the Church/

Now we will go on with full speed to prepare everything for development

building of a home for Senior Citizens and Camp. We thank you once more
everything you have done for us. Greetings to your lovely, hard working
always smiling wife. Yours in Christ, J. S."

of welcoming you and having you as dear guests in our country and homes.

Bro.

Konstanty Sacewicz was for a long time in the hospital but now the danger pas

and
recuperates home.

"The Norton Church of Christ in Columbus, 0. served gladly as hosts to ''the

Polish Delegation" on July 14,74. The names, Piotr Bronowicki, Kostek
Jakoniuk, Alina Lewczuk, and Kazimierz Muranty are difficult for us to remem
ber, but the precious souls whom we associate them are unforgetable. These
people were different somehow and we will never be quite the same.
It is difficult to say what is most memorable but we were impressed, first
of all, with the warmth and friendliness that came through the language bar
rier immediately. Kostek spoke fluent English, Alina spoke some but Piotr &
Kazimierz had to communicate entirely by means of the light in their
eyes
when they were not using an interpreter. In any case, the whole atmosphere
of their presence was easily and readily appreciated.
There was a very evident eagerness on the part of aech of our four guests
to take in as much as possible with regard to the church in this coutry.
There were times when they seemed to be all eyes and ears learning
every
thing they could about us and our work. But when they spoke, it was with a
zeal and a sense of urgency as they told us about themselves and the
work
of the Lord in Poland. They were equally anxious to make what contributions
they could to our lives as they were to receive a blessing from the Lord in
being with us.
We will never forget the wonderful sense of oneness we had that day
-

in

fellowship with them, worshipping and eating together. The time for them
to
leave came too soon. After our noon meal together, we stood by the door
and
sang, they in their language and we in ours, "God Be With You Till We
Meet

Again." In the parking lot I was deeply touched by still more personal

good-

bys. It seemed appropriate somehow as we embraced, men with men, and expressed
in that what could not be expressed in any language. They went on their

way

rejoicing and we still rejoice because of their having been here.

Wm. B. Walker, minister."

"Dear Paul,

We were greatly blessed by having Kostek with us last Sunday evening.

He

surely seems to have a pure faith and love for Christ and His Kingdom,
We appreciate the work you do in encouraging Christians in Poland and also
keeping us enlightened concerning the work and. needs there.
Enclosed you will find a check to go in the fund for "Polish Preachers".

Your brother in Christ,

I^y Linn, minister of Church of Christ

Heath, Ohio."

"Dear Bro. Bajko.

We certainly

were inspired by the visit of our Christian

Brethren from Poland. Their faith never ceases to amaze us.

Enclosed are two cheks that we trust will aid their work for Christ.

Douglas W. Currier, Chairman of

Finance Comm. Fairmount Christian

Church, Richmond, Va."

"Dear Bro. Bajko, Praise the Lord!

What a blessing we all received from our

brothers and sister in Christ!

What a great opportunity to be able to have fellowship with those from other
countries who share a common bond through our Lord. What great faith it must
take to witness for Christ in Poland! The visit from our Polish friends will

certainly enable us to give prayerful support on a more personal basis.

In Him, Terry Smelser, Miss.Comm."
