Our soldiers believed that if they did not stop the invaders on the Track,
they would eventually be fighting them on the Australian mainland. Today
we walk the exact war time Track in the footsteps of heroes. You will gain a
meaningful understanding of just what our soldiers endured. The qualities
these brave young men exhibited of courage , mateship, endurance and
sacrifice are qualities that all Australians should aspire to today as being
fundamental qualities defining a true Aussie.
The Kokoda Track Campaign is a monumental story relived in detail by your
Australian Guides as you traverse one of the most spectacular jungle trails
inthe world.
On the Track you have the daily choice of either sleeping in a mossie proof tent,
or a rest house. The trek crew erect, take down and carry the tents and attend to all camp
duties. All meals are provided with the main meal each day being prepared hygienically
withfresh healthy ingredients.

If walking the
Track is your goal,
the Back Track program could be the
difference between success and failure.
Back Track is fully insured to protect our trekkers. Our leaders and crew are trained in first aid
and emergency evacuation procedures. All necessary safety equipment is carried including
radios and satellite phone. Your safety, security and enjoyment while on your holiday are our
primaryconcerns.
Understanding the war history of Kokoda is also an important part of your trekking experience.
All Back Track trekkers receive a comprehensive history briefing at all the battle sites. There
is always plenty of time to stop and take photographs, rest, or chat with the locals you meet
along the Track and in the villages we pass through. We plan to reach our daily camps in a
relaxed fashion with enough time to wash and explore the area. You can then sit and chat
with your fellow trekkers about the days experiences before dinner. Most nights we camp
in or near villages with the occasional bush camp where necessary. Usually we are in camp
early ensuring a long rest. At night we may have a sing-a-long with our trek crew, or, we can
organise a concert with the local villages with a small donation towards one of their village
improvementprojects.
Our Team size is limited to 18 trekkers including our Back Track Australian leader, plus, our PNG
Trek Management Team and our trek support crew. Our trek crew live mainly in Naduri village,
but some come from other villages along the Track, ensuring a rousing welcome on arrival in
the villages and that a good income goes directly to benefit the Kokoda communities. Having
only small Teams ensures all trekkers are given maximum attention and assistance when
required and in addition, small teams do not place a burden on camp site and village facilities.

are in a North to South direction, commencing at Kokoda and finishing at OwersCorner.
PRIVATE GROUPS
Back Track take Private Teams across
the Track by arrangement.
Call 1300 669 780 for more details.
Historically, the Kokoda campaign started on the Northern beaches and moved in a North
to South direction from Kokoda to Imita Ridge. The courageous delaying tactics of the 39th
Militia Battalion followed by the brilliantly devised fighting withdrawal of the AIFs 2/21st
Infantry Brigade, comprised the first phase of the campaign. Later, when the Japanese were
ordered to withdraw from Ioribaiwa, the AIFs 16th and 25th Brigades fought the second
phase. The second phase of the campaign moved in a South to North direction.
We choose to walk the Track following the direction of the first phase of the campaign.
However, we do operate a few treks each year, that trek South to North. These are some
of our Anzac Day treks and a trek which incorporate the Fuzzy Wuzzy Day celebrations in
Kokodaon November 3.

Kokoda Track
Bydefending, withdrawing and counter attacking,
the Australians thwarted the efforts of the Japanese
to outflank and annihilate them. Had the Japanese
defeated the Australians, they would have taken the
prize of Port Moresby.
The Australian Diggers made the enemy pay dearly
for every metre of his advance. Conditions on
the battlefields of the Kokoda Track were horrific.
Unseasonable heavy rain turned The Track into a
wet, cold, miserable bog. Racked by malaria and
dysentery and having to live, fight and survive in
some of the most difficult terrain in the world, these
heroes kept fighting. Lt Colonel Ralph Honner DSO
MC, who commanded the gallant 39th on the Track
later wrote in the forward to Peter Brunes book,
Those Ragged Bloody Heroes, They have joined the
immortals and of those that did not survive he wrote;
Wherever their bones may lie, the courage of heroes
is consecrated in the history of the free.
This 2nd phase of the Kokoda campaign is detailed in
our pre-departure information and explained by your
trek leader while youre on the Track.
Following the final stanza of the Kokoda campaign,
the 2/16th Battalion left the Gona battlefield with less
than 50 fit men. When walking The Track today, we
do so in awe and with deep respect for the Diggers.
The sheer ruggedness of the terrain, the savage uphill
and brutal downhill sections, the heat, humidity,
the treacherous and ever changing river and creek
crossings are only appreciated when experienced.
Our soldiers sacrifice throughout the New Guinea
campaign is inspiring.
TRACK or TRAIL?
Either term is acceptable.
Both are respectful and
accepted by the majority of
campaign veterans.
REMEMBERING KOKODA: the Kokoda Track is as significant to the history of Australia as Gallipoli.
Like Gallipoli, Kokoda is symbolicof the remarkable values our soldiers displayed of mateship, courage, endurance
and sacrifice. These are basic values that all Australians can aspire to as part of the true defining character of an
Aussie. The privileged life we all enjoy today in Australia is due in no small way to the heroism of the men and
women who fought and died in foreign battlefields including New Guinea, and along TheKokoda Track.

with all the Track communities. Many people from Naduri Village are
now living in Port Moresby and some maintain homes in both locations.
In PortMoresby we store and warehouse all our trekking gear with the
Naduri community. As well as storage they are responsible for cleaning
and maintaining the gear after each trek. This provides an additional
business opportunity and additional employment throughout the season.
By hiring a personal porter to carry your pack throughout your Kokoda
trek, you not only increase your own enjoyment of the trek by eliminating
the effort required to carry a heavy pack over very challenging terrain,
but you are supplying additional work for a very thankful village member.
The wages of our carriers have contributed so much to the prosperity and
general happy enhancement to village life.

Anzac Day 2015: Back Track currently conducts the most remote Anzac Day
ceremonies held anywhere in the world. We avoid large crowds and associated
campsite overcrowding. Due to the demand for treks in the 100th Anniversary year
of the Gallipoli landing and the birth of the Anzacs, we have scheduled additional
Anzac Day treks. #Anzac Day Teams 2 and 3 commence trek at Kokoda and
Teams 4 and 5 commence trek at Owers Corner. All 4 Teams meet and camp on
the eve of Anzac Day on the summit of Brigade Hill for a never to be forgotten
dawn commemorative ceremony on Anzac Day. Brigade Hill is a beautifully
located, remote and sacred Kokoda Track battle site. Team 1 commences trek
at Kokoda and Team 6 commences trek at Owers Corner. Both Teams meet on
the eve of Anzac Day at beautiful Irobaiwa Village for a never to be forgotten
dawn commemorative ceremony on Anzac Day. Irobaiwa Village overlooks the
southernmost advance point reached by the Japanese invaders in 1942.
##
Kokoda Fuzzy Wuzzy Day: This is a longer itinerary (12 days). Team 24 treks
commences at Owers Corner. Team 25 commences in Kokoda and will arrive
in Kokoda 02 Nov to join with Team 24. Both teams will spend the full day in
Kokoda celebrating Fuzzy Wuzzy Day (03 Nov). An additional $150 is applied to
Teams24 and 25 as this trek is a 12 day itinerary.

Joe trekked Kokoda in 2012
Ive taken away serious values from the trek. The main one for me is
that work is not the be all & end all, but your friends are. The support
of people is immense & extraordinary if you open yourself up to let
people in. To truly understand the magic that happens there you really
need to experience it for yourself, nothing can or will compare. The
thrill will probably never be replicated & at the end of it all, standing
at the cemetery in our final ceremony where I was absolutely devastated
&shattered thinking about my mate Chris. Looking around at my fellow
Trekkers, they were inspiring, every single one of them Renea, Michelle,
Mark, Mark, Trace, Frank, Ian, Chad, Pete, James, Zac & John. Each
with their own reasons & stories.. I had a level of satisfaction & pride
that no one can ever take away from me!
The little big man from Melbourne. I took on Kokoda & I won.
Michelle trekked Kokoda in 2013
It was one of the most physical, emotional and spiritual challenges I
have experienced in my lifetime. The bonds formed by everyone in the
group will stay with us forever. There is nothing like being dropped into
the jungle, in a foreign country with a bunch of strangers and coming
out the other end as mates. Definitely life changing.
Jonathan trekked in 2013
Kokoda has always been on my bucket list for a very long time, ever
since I served in the Australian army. It wasnt until my brother decided
to go that we thought that we should do it together, so we did... Actually
being the first sons since our granddad to serve in the military and
the first ever to walk the Kokoda trail, it truly means a lot to me (and
always will) and to experience that with my brother is a moment in time
that Ill never ever forget.
So whatever your reason and whatever your goals are, walk the Kokoda
Trail. You will not regret it!
Marg trekked Kokoda in 2013
I walked Kokoda in May 2013. My father was a soldier in the
39thBattalion and I wanted to honour his memory and try to experience
some of what he went through. He spoke little of his time there but did
tell us as children the legend of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels. I expected
the trip to be arduous but in reality although hard and at times very
emotional it was a wonderful experience.
The shy friendly warmth of the trekking crew, porters and the people
of the villages was overwhelming and the amazing mountains and
forest vegetation just beautiful. I particularly remember my first night
surrounded by the sounds of cascading water, a cacophony of frog calls
and the harmonious singing from the crew. More stars in the sky than
Ihave seen, and the trees glowing with fireflies.
An unforgettable and life-changing journey.

Kokoda trek will operate. Back Track strives to ensure that our clients
are as best prepared as possible for their adventure no matter how
remote or exotic the location anywhere in the world.
TREKKING SEASON
It is possible to trek the Kokoda Track all year round. However, the
best period to trek is during the cooler, dryer, mid year months from
April to November. The trekking season commences on Anzac Day (25
April) and continues through to early November. Outside this period
the chance of rain increases dramatically, temperatures and humidity
are high and trail conditions can be rough and very muddy. As well,
creeks and river crossings can become increasingly challenging. Anzac
Day treks usually encounter significant rain falls with subsequent
muddy trails. However, because of the significance of Anzac Day to all
Australians, many trekkers are prepared to accept these conditions as
an added challenge. We do not recommend that you trek outside the
trekking season.
