BALTIC ODYSSEY
From Edinburgh to Helsinki, immediately following Wild & Ancient Britain.
Stretching a thousand miles in length the Baltic Sea bathes the shores of nine countries:
Germany, Denmark, Poland, Lithuania, Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, and Finland. From
Edinburgh, Scotland, continue aboard the Island Sky and join our Baltic Odyssey voyage to the
port cities, towns, and islands whose histories were written along the shores of this legendary sea.
A transit from the North Sea through the 61-mile Kiel Canal brings us into the Baltic, for
centuries fought over and won by Romans, Vikings, Slavs, and Teutons who sought to control
the trade in the region. For five hundred years, the German-based Hanseatic League established
and maintained a trade monopoly in the Baltic and the cities we visit in the region, including
Gdansk, Riga, and Tallinn, showcase that prosperous alliance with their superb merchant
houses, medieval town squares, cathedrals, and palaces. Enjoy excursions both by motorcoach
and on foot as we explore cobblestone passageways, take in breathtaking views of rooftops and
spires glinting in the light, wander among meticulous botanical gardens, and pay tribute to the
working class political heroes of the late 20th century. We also savor the natural beauty of the
island of Sylt; explore the World Heritage Site of Visby, “city of ruins and roses;” learn about
the history and craftsmanship of the region’s famous amber; and spend our final two days in
magnificent St. Petersburg with a special tour of the Hermitage.
ISLAND SKY
Built in 1992 and recently renovated, the Island Sky is a spacious, yet intimate, expedition
vessel. The ship carries 100 passengers in well-appointed outside cabins with ocean views. Each
cabin features two twin beds that can be reconfigured into one queen, a sitting area, en suite
bathroom, large wardrobes, vanity table, and excellent storage. A small refrigerator, television,
personal safe, hair dryer, assorted toiletries, and individually controlled air-conditioning and
heating are provided in every cabin. Public spaces include a large lounge, bar with piano, library
stocked with fiction and reference books along with a selection of games, and an elegant single
sitting dining room. Outside decks feature a bar, spa pool, and an aft sun deck where meals are
served in clement weather. For excursions ashore, Island Sky carries a fleet of Zodiacs; bridge
visits allow for the chance to see her expert officers and crew at work. Ship’s Registry: Bahamas

WHAT TO EXPECT
For most activities, a relatively moderate level of exertion is required. You will need to
climb into and out of Zodiacs for excursions ashore; staff and crew members will be on
hand to assist. We have designed shore excursions to accommodate both those who wish
moderate strolls and those who prefer more active hikes. A few of the excursions may have
rough terrain, with uneven, rocky beaches. In June, temperatures are usually quite comfort-
able and will vary depending upon our altitude on land or our ship’s position at sea. Expect
highs in the 65ºF – 75ºF range, cooling slightly as you travel north. Flexibility is a must,
as itineraries are subject to change, and landings may be tidal or weather dependent. We
will mail you a complete list of recommended clothing, essentials to bring, and a suggested
reading list approximately five months prior to departure. Participants will most enjoy the
remarkable opportunities this expedition offers if they travel with a spirit of adventure.

SHETLANDS
EXPEDITION LEADERS
Especially chosen for this voyage, our team of expert leaders and lecturers serves to bring a
comprehensive educational component to your adventure through lectures, guided excursions,
and daily recaps.
Ian Cooke (Expedition Leader) – A native of England, Ian’s background is deeply seated in
practical ornamental horticulture. After graduating from Pershore College of Horticulture in the
Cotswold’s, Ian ran his own business, building residential gardens and providing insight and
direction to private and corporate clients. He has lectured on board ships in the British Isles, the
Mediterranean, South America, and Japan. His intimate knowledge of Britain coupled with his hor-
ticultural and botanical knowledge make him the perfect choice to lead our British Isles exploration.
Peter Harrison, MBE – A professional birder, artist, author, and screenwriter, Peter is widely
considered the world’s foremost authority on seabirds. Often credited with having seen more seabirds
than anyone, past or present, Peter has written and illustrated over a dozen books, of which Seabirds:
An Identification Guide is considered the bible of seabird identification. An active conservationist, he
has been honored by Queen Elizabeth II with the title Member of the British Empire for services to
natural history. He is also a cofounder of Zegrahm Expeditions and a Fellow of The Explorers Club.
Shirley Metz – Shirley is a modern-day adventurer and explorer. In 1989 she became the first
woman, and one of the first Americans, in history to ski overland to the South Pole, a journey of
over 800 miles. She has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records, and in 1989 the Soviet minister
of polar research and exploration bestowed his country’s prestigious Polar Award upon her, the
only woman to receive this distinction. Shirley is a cofounder of Zegrahm Expeditions, a Fellow of
The Explorers Club, and member of the Society of Woman Geographers.
Colleen Batey – Dr. Colleen Batey’s childhood passion for archaeology led her to Durham
University where she received her doctorate. Her research interests focus on the settlement and
burial of Scandinavian settlers and she has excavated extensively on Viking and Late Norse sites
in Northern Scotland, Orkney, and Shetland Islands, and more recently in Iceland. Since 2002
Colleen has been a lecturer in archaeology at the University of Glasgow and until 2008 was the
finds research manager for the Archaeological Institute of Iceland. Colleen worked as British
coordinator with the Smithsonian Institute of Washington to prepare the Vikings: North Atlantic
Saga exhibition which toured the US in 2002 – 2003.
Rick Price – Rick began his career as a marine biologist in 1978, working for the British Antarctic
Survey. In 1988, he was awarded the Polar Medal by Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
Life as a marine biologist sparked an interest in underwater photography that evolved into a career as
a freelance wildlife cameraman. Since the early 1990s, Rick has filmed for the BBC Natural History
Unit and The Discovery Channel—both on land and underwater—and he has worked on David
Attenborough’s documentary series, Life of Birds and Life in the Freezer.
Ian R. Stone – Ian attended the Universities of Manchester, London, and Cambridge and has
degrees in geology, history, and mathematics. He traveled the world, teaching in various regions
such as the Indian Ocean and Africa and later at the University of Kent at Canterbury where he
researched the history of the polar regions and the Crimean War. He has been a guest lecturer on a
large number of expedition cruises, having traveled very widely in both the Arctic and the Antarctic,
and in the Black and Baltic Seas, as well as in waters nearer his home in the Isle of Man.
Blakey Vermeule and Terry Castle (Stanford Travel/Study Lecturers) – Assistant Professor of
English at Stanford University, Blakey earned her Ph.D. in English Literature, from the University
of California Berkeley in 1995. She has long studied the works of the English Romantic poets, from
Blake and Byron to Keats and Coleridge. She has a profound understanding of the passion, intimacy,
and vibrant connection the Romantics had with nature and has authored several books on this
subject. An English professor, Terry has been a prized member of the Stanford faculty since joining
in 1983. Terry’s scholarly interests include 18th-century British fiction, the First World War, and
English art and culture of the 1920s and 1930s.
