WATER
a priceless contribution
SOLIDARITY
YOUTH MOVEMENT
50 Villages
2000 Families
10000 plus Beneficiaries
ver had a parching throat?
ver put off basic needs because of water-scarcity?
erala, the southern state of India, is blessed with rivers and other sources of water, and 100‐
110 rain‐days per year. But, due to peculiar nature of Kerala’s topography, many parts of the state
experience acute scarcity for pure drinking water throughout the year.
Water‐scarcity becomes worst in summer and it is very common that ladies and children march
kilometers in search of drinking water. It causes health, social and family problems and places
barricades before overall growth of generations. The actual size of the problems span beyond
explanations, which are not yet properly addressed either by government or non‐government
agencies.
The reception accorded to the activities of SOLIDARITY Youth Movement for the last 6 years,
involving many agitations and service activities, has been very encouraging. The Endosulphan
Rehabilitation Project, Housing Project, and Medical and Educational Aid Projects of SOLIDARITY
were both unprecedented and highly successful experience. Social Service has been redefined as
some thing more than being mere middlemen. All the service projects SOLIDARITY has taken up so
far have youth’s hard work as its integral part.
Drinking water is priceless, and its value will be truly realized only when it is denied. SOLIDARITY
indents to take up the Drinking Water project for the tens of thousands who suffer from the scarcity
of water, and the project is supposed to quench their thirst for drinking water.
Goal
There are about 50 villages in Kerala that suffer from acute potable water shortage. SOLIDARITY
intends to implement drinking water projects in these areas where government projects are
unavailable or insufficient. Activities like rainwater harvesting to nurture groundwater sources will
also be taken up. While selecting the areas for project implementation care will be taken to select
most backward of the regions in the 14 districts of Kerala.
How it Works
Wells/Bore Wells in the needy and identified areas will be prepared, and water will be pumped into
reservoir tanks to distribute through pipes. Efforts will be made to get land for the well, reservoir
tank and pump house free of cost. The land will be bought at reasonable rates if necessary.

considerably. The cost will come down further in case of land being made available free of cost
Possibility of utilizing existing ill‐maintained wells will also be explored. Project cost is expected to
be met by donation from general public.
Project period
All the 50 projects, across 14 districts of the state, are expected to be completed by May 2010.
Project Implementation
All the projects will be carried out under the supervision of the Service Wing of SOLIDARITY.
A state‐level committee under the leadership of the State
Secretary has been formed for this purpose. The projects
will be implemented with the participation of the
beneficiaries at each project locations. A Beneficiary
Committee will be formed locally for successful
implementation and day‐to‐day operation of the projects.
This committee will be monitored by SOLIDARITY’s
concerned district committee. A person will be given the
responsibility to operate the pump house. His
remuneration and other associated expenses will be met
by the beneficiaries themselves.
A Drop… from YOU
Words of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH):
~ "When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three,
recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit,
or a righteous child who prays for him".
~ Once a companion came to the Prophet (PBUH) and said: "O
Allah's Prophet! My mother died with out leaving a will, is
there any benefit for her if I gave Sadaqah (charity) on her
behalf?” The Prophet answered “Yes, I advise you to give the
Sadaqah through water."
~ "While a man was walking he felt thirsty and went down a
well and drank water from it. On coming out of it, he saw a
dog panting and eating mud because of excessive thirst. The
man said, 'This (dog) is suffering from the same problem as
that of mine. So he (went down the well), filled his shoe with
water, caught hold of it with his teeth and climbed up and watered the dog. Allah thanked him
for his (good) deed and forgave him."
