2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

China dominates in the global wood-based panel trade. In 2014, China
exported 5,865 thousand tonnes of wood-based panels totaling 5,813 million
USD, 15% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the U.S.,
where it supplied 15% of its total wood-based panel exports in value terms,
accounting for 55% of the U.S. total imports.
Overall, the global trade of wood-based panels reached 16,255 million USD,
with a CAGR of 13.2% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it showed steady
growth, rising from 13.5 million tonnes in 2007 to 16.2 million tonnes in 2014.
In 2014, the U.S. (12.4%), Japan (11.9%), the Netherlands (11.2%), the
Republic of Korea (6.2%) and Germany (5.6%) were the leading destinations
of wood-based panel imports, together making up 47.3% of global imports. The
share of the U.S. increased significantly (+12.4 percentage points), while the
share of Germany illustrated negative dynamics (-4.8percentage points).
China and Indonesia were among the other main global suppliers of woodbased panels in 2014 with a combined share of 55% of global exports.
However, the fastest growing exporter from 2007 to 2014 was the Russian
Federation (+4.4% per year). China significantly strengthened its position in
the global export structure, from 31% in 2007 to 39% in 2014.
