Awards are given to the people who excel in their own fields.

Awards are given as


an acknowledgement to the work done by them in their field.
Coming to Indian honours system,it is recognized by Government of India. Indian
honours system is classified in five types - Leadership, Literature, Civilian,
Patriotic, and Particular.
Let us look after the various awards given in each of the fields.
Bahart Ratna :
-> Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award.It was first awarded in 1954.
-> Bharat Ratna is awarded to the persons who excelled in their fields of highes
t order
-> Maximum three number of awards are given in a year.
-> The actual award is designed in the shape of peepal leaf with Bharat Ratna in
scribed in Devanagari script in the sun figure.
-> The prime minister recommeneds the president about the award reciepent.
Facts about Bharat Ratna:
-> since 2008 no Bharat Ratna has been awarded. Pandit Bhimsen joshi was the rec
iepent of the award in 2008
-> Abdul Ghaffar Khan was the first foreigner to be hounered with Bharat Ratna i
n 1987.
-> Presently there is a demand from the people that sachin tendulkar must be awa
rded Bharat Ratna for his excellence in Sports field
Padma Awards:
There are three Padma awards given on Republic day every year.
(a) Padma vibhushan:
-> This is the second highest national award.
-> Instituted on 2nd January 1954 by the Government of India.
-> It is awarded to recognize exceptional and distinguished service to the natio
n in any field.
-> Padma Vibhushan consists a medal and a citation. The medal has a lotus flower
in the centre and "Padma vibhushan" written below the flower.
(b) Padma Bhushan:
-> This is the third largest National Awards.
-> Instituted on 2nd January 1954 by the Government of India.
-> Awarded to recognize distinguished service of high order in any field.
(c) Padma shri:
-> This is the third largest National Awards.
-> Instituted on 2nd January 1954 by the Government of India.
-> It recognizes the contribution of indian citizens in various spheres of activ
ity including Arts,Education,Industry,Literature,Science,Sports,Social Service a
nd Public life.
Facts about Padma Awards:
-> The Padma awards are normally not conferred posthumously. However, in highly
deserving cases, the Government could consider giving an award posthumously if t
he demise of the person proposed to be honored has been recent, say within a per
iod of one year preceding the Republic Day on which it is proposed to announce t
he award.
-> The recommendations made by the Awards Committee are submitted to the Prime M
inister and the President for their approval. No award is conferred except on th
e recommendation of the Awards Committee.
-> The total number of awards to be given in a year (excluding posthumous awards
and to foreigners) should not be more than 120.
-> The award does not amount to a title and cannot be used as a suffix or prefix
to the award winner s name on letterheads, invitation cards, posters, books etc.

In the case of any misuse, the defaulter will forfeit the award.
-> The Padma awards were suspended between 1977 and 1980 as well as between 1992
and 1998.
Military Awards:
(1) Wartime Valour Awards:
-> There are three awards under this which are awarded to officers or enlisted p
ersonnel from all the branches of the Indian Military.
-> These are established on 26th January,1950 by the Government of India.
(a) Paramvir Chakra:
-> It is the India's highest military decoration award.
-> Awarded for national bravery in the presence of enemy.
-> The medal is of 1-3/8 inch radius and is made of bronze.
-> In the centre, on a raised circle is the State emblem, surrounding which are
the four replicas of Indra's Vajra.
-> On the rear, around a plain centre, two legends separated by lotus flowers, t
he words 'Param Vir Chakra' are written in Hindi and English.
(b) Mahavir Chakra:
-> It is the India's second highest military decoration award.
-> Awarded for national bravery in the presence of enemy.
-> The medal is circular and is made of standard silver
-> Embossed on the obverse is a five pointed heraldic star with circular centrepiece bearing the gilded State emblem in the centre
-> The words Maha Vir Chakra" are embossed in Devanagari and English on the rever
se with two lotus flowers in the middle.
(c) Vir Chakra:
-> Awarded for acts of bravery in the battle field.
-> The medal is 1-3/8 inch circular silver medal.
-> A five pointed star, with the chakra in the centre, and, on this, the domed g
ilded State emblem.
-> Around a plain centre, two legends separated by lotus flowers,above Veer Chak
ra in Hindi and in English.
(2) Peace Time Gallantry Awards:
-> These are awarded either to Military or Civilian personnel.
-> These awards are established in 4th January,1952 by Govenment of India.
(a) Ashoka Chakra:
-> Awarded for national bravery away from battle field.
-> The medal is circular gold gilt, 1-3/8 inches in diameter.
-> In the centre, the chakra (wheel) of Ashoka, surrounded by a lotus wreath and
with an ornate edge.The medal is named on the edge.
(b) Kirti Chakra:
-> Awarded for national bravery away from battle field.
-> The medal is circular silver, 1-3/8 inches in diameter.
-> In the centre, the chakra (wheel) of Ashoka, surrounded by a lotus wreath and
with an ornate edge.The medal is named on the edge.
(c) Shaurya Chakra:
-> Awarded for national bravery generally for counter insurgency operations and
the action against the enemy during peace time.
-> This is circular bronze, 1-3/8 inches in diameter.
-> In the centre, the chakra (wheel) of Ashoka, surrounded by a lotus wreath and
with an ornate edge.The medal is named on the edge.

Facts about Military Awards:


-> There are other Military awards like Sena medal,Nao Sena medal(Navy),Vayusena
medal(Air Force).
-> All the Military awards are also given posthumously.
Sports Awards:
(a) Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award:
-> It is the India's highest honour given for achievement in sports.
-> The award is named after late Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India.
-> The award was instituted in the year 1991-92 by Government of India.
-> The award carries a cash prize of Rs.750000
(b) Arjuna Award:
-> The Arjuna awards were instituted in 1961 by the Government of India.
-> Awarded for outstanding achievement in National Sports.
-> The award carries a cash prize of Rs.500000,a bronze statutte of Arjuna and a
scroll.
(c) Dronacharya Award:
-> It is awarded by Government of India for excellence in sports coaching.
-> The award comprises a bronze statutte of Dronacharya a scroll of honour and a
cash component of Rs.500000
-> The award was instituted in 1985.
(d) Dhyanchand Award:
-> Dhaynchand Award is India's highest award for lifetime achievement in sports
and games,given by Government of India.
-> The award is named after the legendary Indian hockey player Dhaynchand.
-> Instituted in 2002.
-> The award carries a cash prize of Rs.500000.
Film Awards:
(a) National Film Awards:
-> These are the most prominent film award ceremony in India,established in 1954
.
-> Due to the national scale of the National Film Awards,it is considered to be
the equivalent of the American Academy Awards.
(b) Dada Saheb Phalke Award:
-> The Dada Saheb Phalke Award is India's highest award in cinema given annually
by the Government of India for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema.
-> It was instituted in 1969,the birth cenetary year of Dada Saheb Phalke,consid
ered as the Father of Indian Cinema.
-> This award carries a 'Swarna Kamal',a shawl and a cash prize of Rs.1000000.
(c) Filmfare Awards:
-> The Filmfare awards are presented annually by the Times group to honour both
artistic and technical excellence of professionals in the Hindi language film in
dustry of India.
-> The awards were first introduced in 1954.
-> They were initially referred to as the Clare Awards after the editor of Times
of India,Clare Mendonca.
Literary and Cultural Awards in India:
(a) Sahitya Akademi Award:
-> It is a literary honour in India instituted in 1954.
-> Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters,annually confers on writ

ers of outstanding works in twenty-four major Indian languages.


(b) Jnanpith Award:
-> The Jnanpith Award is a literary award in India,instituted in 1961.
-> It is presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith,a trust founded by the Sahu Jain fa
mily,the publishers of Times of India newspaper.
-> It carries a cheque of Rs.7 lakh,a citation plaque and a bronze replica of Sa
raswati Godess.
Facts :
There are other literary awards like Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar, Lalit Kala
Akademi Ratna,Saraswati Samman(prose & poetry),vyas samman.
Science Awards:
(a) Jamnalal Bajaj Award:
-> It is a prestigious Indian Award for promoting Gandhian values,social work an
d development.
-> Established in 1978 by Jamnalal Bajaj foundation of Bajaj Group.
-> This award contains Rs.5 lakh,a certificate and a trophy.
(b) Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award:
-> This prize for science and technology is awarded annually by the Council of S
cientific and Industrial Research(CSIR)
-> Awarded for notable and outstanding research applied for fundemental,in Biolo
gy,Chemistry,Environmental Science,Mathematics,Medicine and Physics under the ag
e of 45 years.
-> This is the highest award for science in India,first awarded in 1958.
-> The prize comprises a citation,a plaque and a cash award of Rs.5 lakh.
(c) Borlaug Award:
-> Instituted in 1971 and given for Agricultural field.
-> This award comprises a certificate,Gold Medal and Rs.1 lakh Dhanvantari award
.
-> This award is given by Dhanvantari foundation.
(d) Dr BC Roy Award:
-> Medical Council Of India instituted Dr BC Roy award in 1976,in memory of Bhar
at Ratna Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy.
-> The award is given annually under categories statemanship of the highest orde
r in India,Medical man-cum- statesman,eminent medical person,eminent person in p
hilosophy and arts.
-> It is presented by the President of India in New Delhi on 1st July the Nation
al Doctor's Day.
-> This award comprises a Silver Medal,certificate and Rs.1 lakh cash.
(e) Homi Bhabha Award:
-> Instituted in 1990,and given for excellence in field of Atomic energy.
-> This award comprises Rs.50000 and a certificate.
-> This award is given by Birla Foundation. It comprises medals,certificate and
Rs.50000.
(f) GD Birla Award:
-> GD Birla award for scientific research is conferred by KK Birla Foundation.
-> This award comprises Rs.1.45 lakh and certificate.
