Panel Zones Hear

The document provides information and design tools for evaluating the shear strength of panel zones in steel knee frames. It includes input fields for frame geometry and forces, calculation of shear strength with and without stiffeners, and checking of stiffener requirements. The design is based on published design provisions and accounts for variables such as tension field action.

1. All terms and pameters are clearly defined in DP 3.1
2. User overide values apply to Vr, h and a only. Therefore, all data values indicated
must be entered in order to allow calculation of other things such as stiffener data, etc.
3. The sign convention shown must be observed at all times. See DP 3.3.
This data is required for solid web frame input.
All knee geometry and force Vr are calculated from
this unless overidden in the cells provided below.
This data is required for solid web frame input
4. Fy and E are set to the default values of 55 ksi and 29000 ksi. These may be changed
by the user.

This is user overide data which can b used by the

user to set the desired values of Vr, h and a.
for open web and solid web frames
5. Configuration a is not applicable to open web frames.
6. Choose ASD, LRFD or LSD by clicking on the desire design format.
7. Tension field action will be used when allowed by the design rules unless the user
checks the box "Don't Use Tens. Field". Also, addition of stiffeners will disable tension field
action. Therefore, if tension field action is allowed, addition of stiffeners will rarely if ever
result in an improved design.

Only the parameters shown require

input for open web frames

For open web frams, the data in these columns

will be displayed and must be input. The value of Vr,
etc. will be calculated from these data. The user
override values also apply to these data.
