Chem 142

Autumn 2015

LABS
Each experiment consists of a prelab assignment, lab work, and lab report. The lab schedule is provided at the
end of this document.

Participation.

If you have more than one unexcused lab absence in Chem 142, you will automatically

receive a course grade of 0.0.

If an absence is unavoidable, please contact the stockroom (Bagley 271) as soon as possible and we will try to
schedule you into an alternate lab session. If there is no session available, you will receive a grade for the missed
lab equal to the average of your scores for the other five labs. Examples of unavoidable causes include: illness;
death or serious illness in the immediate family; and with prior notification observance of regularly scheduled
religious obligations, attendance at academic conferences or field trips, or participation in university-sponsored
activities.
If you have an anticipated conflict with one of your lab sessions, you will be allowed to reschedule into another
lab session, if one is available. However, rescheduling must be done in advance of the day of your regularly
scheduled lab session, and if the reason is not a qualifying excused absence, a 15-point penalty will be assessed
to your lab score at the end of the quarter. If you cannot reschedule an anticipated absence in advance or you
have a last-minute unexcused absence (e.g., you are more than 10 minutes late to lab, forget to go to lab, or
sleep through the lab session), you will receive a grade of 0 for that experiment.

Safety. You are required to follow the safety protocols outlined in your laboratory manual. In particular, you
are required to wear approved safety goggles and a lab coat during all the experiments. If you do not dress
appropriately, you will not be allowed to attend the lab session. No open-toed shoes, no bare legs or ankles will
be permitted, nor will any clothing that interferes with lab activities. Please be sure to read the general safety
information in the front section of the lab manual prior to attending your first lab session.

Prelab Assignments. The information necessary to prepare yourself for each lab, including access to the
prelab assignments, is available online via the Laboratory Resources section of the course website. This course
uses Canvas Quizzes for online prelabs exclusively. Questions regarding prelab content should be directed to
your TA. Technical issues within Canvas should be reported to Canvas Support using the Help link in the upper,
right-hand corner of the browser window when you are logged into Canvas. Note that each student only gets
two submissions per assignment and that we cannot grant extensions or reopen the assignment for individual
students, so be sure to complete the assignment and click submit quiz prior to the deadline: 3:00pm on
Monday in the week the lab is performed, regardless of which day you are scheduled to perform the experiment.
You alone are responsible for completing the assignment before the deadline. You must score > 0 points (out of
5 total) on the pre-lab before the deadline. If you don't have the required > 0 point score by the deadline, 15
points will be deducted from your lab grade at the end of the quarter.

Purpose & Method. The purpose and method sections of your notebook must be completed before the
start of your lab session. This requires that you read through the introductory information and experimental
procedure in the lab manual in order to summarize, in your own words, the goal and general procedure for the
experiment. Do not copy the overview or purpose sections (or any other prose) from the lab manual, online
resources, or from other students that is plagiarism. See the lab manual for more details.

Lab Notebook. Bound laboratory notebook (not loose leaf) with numbered pages and carbonless duplicate
copies are available at the bookstore. Please note the special nature of this lab notebook.

All recording and reporting must be in this notebook in ink. Draw a neat line through your errors instead
of erasing or whiting out. You should still be able to read the mistakejust in case!
On the first available page of your notebook write (i) your name and student number, (ii) Autumn
Quarter 2015, (iii) the course number, and (iv) your section letters.
Use the second page as a table of contents which you will fill in as you complete experiments in this
course and subsequent courses.
Write your name, section, experiment number, and lab partners name on each page you use.
Be prepared to hand in the duplicate pages at the end of each lab period.

During Labs.

Perform only assigned work during the lab section in which you are enrolled. Record

observations (what you see) and data (what you measure), perform all necessary calculations, and come to some
conclusion based on your results.

Before You Leave the Lab. Your TA will check to make sure that you have done all assigned work, cleaned
up your station, and returned all equipment to the stockroom and/or your drawer. Your TA will collect the
duplicate pages of your work for the day and any completed lab reports, if applicable.

Lab Reports. The lab report instructions, templates, and submission deadlines are available on the Chem
142 Labs Aut15 website in Canvas, accessible via links on the course website or directly once logged into
Canvas. Be sure to consult the online lab information prior to attending your lab session. Note that for many
Chem 142 labs, you will need to print out and bring the report sheets for in-lab reports with you to the lab
session so that they can be completed and turned in before the end of the lab period. Please refer to the
Course Policies information on the course website regarding late submission of lab reports.

Lab Schedule.

The Chem 142 lab schedule is provided on the next page. You are required to attend a lab

safety orientation session the week of October 5th, according to the day, time, and location assigned to the
section for which you are registered. Dress in proper lab attire and bring your lab manual and lab notebook
with you you will complete a safety worksheet as part of the orientation session.
