HAPPY EASTER! Christ is
risen! This magazine goes
out on 4th April - Easter
Day. Easter Day is a time for
celebrating with other people
in a church or on a hilltop at
dawn. But a magazine is for
reading at home in a moment
of leisure when you can pause
to think.
So let me ask you to think for
a moment about something
that doesn’t cross our minds
while we are singing to a
brass band on Easter Day,
but maybe only creeps up
on us later. Let me talk
about doubt, the difficulty of
believing; and that icon of
doubt - Thomas, Doubting
Thomas.
Tom’s Doubts
Doubting Thomas is one of
my heroes, and I’ve always
felt that he gets a bad press.
It’s later tradition that has
run him down - you don’t
have to assume that he’s
being criticized in the story
that’s told about him. In fact,
his story was told at a time
when there was probably
nobody left who had ever
“seen” Jesus first hand. The
years had passed and none of
them had been there on that
first Easter. So, like us, they
had to believe without the
privilege of seeing. Part of

what this story says to them,
I think, is that their way of
being Christian is okay too.
You don’t have to have seen
the resurrected Jesus in order
to believe he is alive.
But beyond that, I think
generally we get it wrong when
we assume that the primary
responsibility of a Christian
is to “believe” certain things.
Doubts are bad, according to
this ideology, and admitting
to them is a failure.
But who made up that rule?
And does it really hold
water? What’s wrong with
doubting? And what’s so
sacrosanct about “belief?”
Hard to Believe
Believing is a mental exercise
- but there’s a pretty strong
emotional element to it as
well.

The dictionary defines
belief by using words like
“have confidence in” and
“hold to be true” and “give
assent to.” That’s all very
well, but I find some things
very hard to believe in even
though I know they’re true
(for example, that a year from
tomorrow I’ll get my free bus
pass!). Similarly I believe
some things implicitly even
though it’s hard to see a
rational basis for the belief
(like the fact that my wife
loves me even when she’s
angry at me).
The thing about mental
exercises that aren’t solely
rational is that it’s hard to
control them. I can’t always
turn “confidence” on and off
with a switch. Some days
I just don’t feel confident
about anything. This doesn’t
make me a bad person or a
bad Christian. It just makes
me human. Some days I have
trouble trusting in goodness
- the strength of evil seems
much more obvious and
overwhelming. In other
words, sometimes (often?)
I don’t seem to have much
control over the things I

believe. What I can control
- and, I hope, do - is how I
choose to behave.
Live Differently
And that’s consistent with
the way Jesus taught too.
Jesus didn’t spend three years
trying to convince people to
believe in miracles, or in his
identity as the Son of God, or
in his impending resurrection.
He didn’t ask them to believe
in statements of faith, or
descriptions of God, or lists
of rules. No, he asked people
to live differently. He asked
people to live as if God were
the king. He asked people to
behave as though what they
did and said mattered to the
world.
Ultimately, I think he didn’t
care whether or not they
gave mental assent to those
propositions. He cared about
how they treated the poor,

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Dunblane Cathedral exists, as a congregation of the
Church of Scotland, for the purpose of reflecting
the love of God to all people regardless of belief or
membership of the Church, to be a place where any
and all may experience God’s presence and to be a
fellowship which seeks to nourish and sustain its faith
through worship, friendship, care and education.
In response to the Love of God, the congregation
seeks to serve the community in every aspect of its
life and to promote the Christian values of concern
for others, forgiveness, reconciliation, truth and
integrity, acknowledging that we ourselves do not
always live up to these values.

it when I stand up for those who are forced to live on

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK

Christian Aid Week runs
from 9 to 16 May this year and
starts with a United Service
in Dunblane Cathedral at
6.30pm on Sunday 9 May.
The guest speaker will be
the Rev. Kathy Galloway,
who is the new Director of
Christian Aid, Scotland, and
was formerly Leader of the
Iona Community.
The Shop and Restaurant
are open from Tuesday 11
May until and including
Thursday 14 May, 10am to
9 - 16 MAY
2pm daily in the Cathedral
halls. The stalls are: Cake
and Candy; Books; Bric-a-
Brac (no clothes) and Plants
(bedding plants, etc.). We
need contributions and
require help on the stalls
and with serving etc. and are
looking for as many helpers
as possible. To cover all the
jobs required we need at
least 50 people each day. The
normal shifts are 10.00am
to 12noon or 12noon until
2.00pm. If you could spare
an hour or two for one or
more days, please contact
Millie Christie (tel. 825209)
or fill out a form when
they become available in the
Cathedral and hall during
the month of April. For
those who may not be able to
help in the hall, you may be
willing to make a pot of soup
or dessert for the lunches, or
contribute pancakes, scones
or home baking instead. We
do also need help to set up the

from 2.00pm to 4.00pm or
dismantling and clearing up
on Thursday, from 2.00pm to
4.00pm, approximately.

MAKE MONEY WORK FOR GOOD

An ecumenical conference was held on 18 March to focus on the
importance of ethical and socially responsible banking and investment
for the churches and the wider community.
The Church and Society Council of the Church of Scotland
and the Ecumenical Council for Corporate Responsibility
(ECCR) organised the ‘Banking on Justice’ conference
because “the operation of global finance too often harms
the poorest people and the poorest countries.”
Speakers at the well-attended all-day event at St Georges
West Church, Edinburgh, addressed issues of justice and
injustice in global finance and how churches and others can
invest for a fairer and more sustainable future using ethical
and socially responsible models of finance and investment.
Delegates heard speakers from Christian Aid Scotland,
Co-operative Financial Services, Triodos Bank, the Ethical
Property Company and ethical investment specialists EIRIS,
as well as from the Church of Scotland and ECCR.
There was considerable interest in the growing pay
differentials within multinational companies following
publication of the Church Investors Group report on excessive
pay the previous day. Rev. Ian Galloway, Convener of the
Church and Society Council of the Church of Scotland, who
chaired the conference, said: “Communities of faith ought
to consider the social and environmental impacts of our
financial system, in which we all participate. We urgently
need forms of banking and investment that lead to more
socially just and sustainable outcomes.”

responsibility not just in the UK
but worldwide. This conference has
helped show that there are increasingly
practical ways to make money work for

Way back in the Dark Ages
when Ian was in P7 and we
were all a bit younger, Senior
Sunday School undertook
a fascinating project which
resulted in a partnership with
a community in Malawi; “The
Likhubula Link” was born.
Communications were set up,
sporadic at first, greetings were
sent, information gleaned, gifts
exchanged and visits made.
Dunblane welcomed, and was
charmed by Mr. Chiromo, Mr.
Kamanga and Mrs.Navaya,
and everyone collected pencils
to send out to Likhubula with
Colin and Linda. Our Sunday
Schools paid for a cupboard to
be built for Likhubula’s Sunday
school, and some of our own
young people were able to see
it all for themselves in 2008.
Time has passed. Jenni has
already gone on to university,
Ian and Adam and Jonathan
go soon, and Sarah will not
be far behind. The ties binding
the children to Likhubula are
becoming alarmingly loose.
So what of our Sunday Schools
now? Those in Juniors were
only just being born when
the “Link” was first forged.
They have no knowledge or
understanding of what it’s all
about. We all loved Chester
Shaba’s visit last term – his
radio programmes, his spell-
binding stories – but only the
young helpers and teachers
would have put his visit into
context.
So, before we lose all our links,
as they go off to university, we
are setting about strengthening

a fact-finding mission. The
Sunday Schools are going to
spend next term learning about
life in Likhubula, in relation to
ours in Dunblane, focusing on
the essentials of water, food and
education: things we all take for
granted. Along with activities
and challenges planned to
make us think about these,
our mornings will be action-
packed with fun and games
– indoors and out – getting
messy, learning a few words of
Chichewa, singing some songs
and looking at lots of photos
that have accumulated over
the visits. We are highlighting
a partnership that was once at
the forefront of all our minds
and has continued quietly and
with great commitment behind
the scenes. The people who
keep this link alive have been
an inspiration in putting the
programme together. Some of
them will visit us to share their
experiences, and of course we
have our own experts in the
form of our young leaders and
helpers.
We hope the children will be
engaged and absorbed by
the programme, and, as the
weeks go by, want to know
more about the lives of the
community in Likhubula. After
all, that is what partnership is
all about – being interested in
your friends.

Cathedral Tours Don’t miss out on

Want to find out more about the Cathedral?
Are you having friends or relatives for Easter?
The Society of Friends is once more organising short tours of
the Cathedral over the Easter weekend, from Good Friday to
Easter Monday. Everyone is welcome.
Tours lasting about half an hour will take place between
10.00am and 12.00noon (11.00am on Saturday) except Sunday
and every day in the afternoon between 2.00pm and 4.00pm.
As in previous years tours are also planned on Sunday
afternoons in June July and August. There will be further
details of these in the June Magazine.
“A Rubbish Day Out!”
Ever wondered what treasures you might make out of your
trash? Feel like letting your “re-creative, recycling” streak
loose? On Saturday 1 May, the Cathedral is sponsoring a time
for the whole family to explore eco-friendly living in a fun,
engaging way! Discover easy ways for your family to lower
its carbon footprint, come along and turn some total trash
into a true treasure – really! We have carbon footprint and fun
expert Emily Harvey from “Going Carbon Neutral Stirling”
leading us in activities and crafts. There will be food and fun
and fellowship for everybody!

Boys’ Brigade
It’s been a busy month of March for the BB.
Our company section boys have enjoyed serving you
coffee after the church, and we finished the
month with a special Super
Soup Lunch in the hall.
Our Junior Section boys
won the battalion football
competition for the season
and entered three teams of 12 into the
battalion figure marching competition. Possibly
the biggest achievement of the month, though, came
from our cross country boys. Iain Davies, a
P7, finished 3rd in the BB National Cross
Country finals in Edinburgh, helping his
team-mates, Matthew McKinney (9th),
Callum Reay (18th) and a boy from
Bannockburn to bring home the
Under-13 team trophy for Stirling
& District Battalion for the first
time in 23 years!
We need your help again, please,
collecting the Tesco tokens in the
months of April and May. Please
place them in the collection box in the
Cathedral halls.
April sees our five S6 boys spend a
weekend at Carronvale on their Queen’s
Badge completion course. They have now completed
their volunteering, service and expedition
sections and hope to be presented
with the brigade’s highest honour in
Dunfermline in June. We’ll also be
getting ready for our annual displays
in May and finishing off as much
badge work as we can.
We are looking ahead to next year and,
if you are interested in becoming part
of our team of leaders, we’d love to

Rotary Club of Bridge of
Allan and Dunblane Young
Musician Competition
The Rotary Club of Bridge of Allan and Dunblane will again be
staging their annual Young Musician Competition on 25 April
at 1.30pm in the Cathedral hall. This competition offers young
musicians and singers an opportunity to perform to a small
audience in a graded competitive environment.
Entry is open to all young people resident in or attending school
in the area.

Chamber Philpharmonic
Europe – “Powerful
Emotions Tour 2010”
On Tuesday 13 April the Cathedral is one of the four chosen
Scottish venues for what promises to be an evening of wonderful
music-making by this orchestra, under its conductor Leonid
Tritus. The chamber section of this private orchestra will
delight with Vivaldi’s “Spring” from the Four Seasons, Bach’s
Concerto for violin and orchestra, Mozart’s Divertimento in
F major, Albinoni’s Concerto Saint Marc for trumpet and
orchestra, Purcell’s Sonata No 1
in D major for trumpet, strings &
continuo, as well as Grieg’s Hoberg
Suite. They are joined by award-
winning soloists K Gusarov on
trumpet and B Balogh on violin.

The concert begins at 7.30pm.

Handbell Ringers
In April, Cathedral ringers will be taking part in the main
event of the year for the national handbell society, the Handbell
Ringers of Great Britain.
This 3-day event will be held in the University of Leicester and
will include presentations, workshops, concerts, and massed
ringing with several hundred participants from all around
the UK. Dunblane Cathedral’s own Malcolm and Lysbeth
Wilson will be presenting sessions at
this event.

had a successful craft fair
during which solo handbell
ringing was provided and
they also performed during the
Scottish Ringer Rally in Glasgow.
Guild News
The Church of Scotland Guild
theme for the past year has
been “Called to act justly”.
The Cathedral Guild included
in their syllabus a discussion
on justice, and talks on the
Seagull Trust, the Scottish
Bible Society, the Children’s
Panel and the work of the
Mission Aviation Fellowship in
Madagascar.
The Mission Aviation
Fellowship’s Madagascar
Mission Run is one the charity
projects being supported by
the Church of Scotland Guild
from 2009 – 2012. In February
this year our guild was given a
most enlightening talk by Andy
Martin, the Scottish organiser
of this charity. The outstanding
work of MAF should be better
known, especially throughout
the churches.
MAF operates small planes in
over 30 countries, taking much
needed supplies to remote
communities. They work in
close partnership with all kinds
of agencies, taking medical,
relief and development
services and church workers
to isolated villages. When
there is a major disaster in the
world, such as in Haiti, Mission
Aviation Fellowship assists the
international charities with
their relief work.
Our jumble sale in February
raised the wonderful sum of
£614.27 for Guild Projects.
Our thanks go to all who
contributed to this successful
event. Of the goods left over at
the end, the books have been
kept for the local Christian
Aid event in May and the
remainder was taken away to
the Marie Curie warehouse in
Falkirk.
The Guild AGM will take
place on Monday 12 April at
7.30pm in the Cathedral hall.
After the business part of the
evening, there will be a quiz.
All members are asked to
attend this important meeting.
For the visit to Dunblane
Museum on Monday 19 April,
members should gather, as
usual, in the Cathedral hall
at 7.30pm. A talk and guided
tour of the Museum will be
followed by a Shared Supper
in the hall. All members are
invited bring a donation of
food for the meal. The cost of
the evening is £2.
