The Tarkio Nutrition Center is a non-profit business

that serves the Tarkio, Westboro, and Fairfax communities. The center provides
home-delivered meals to
residents 60 years and older
and to those who are under
60 years who have disabilities. On average, 50 meals
per day are delivered by volunteers during the week to
recipients. The center also
serves 30 or more meals per
day to patrons coming to
the center on weekdays. On
special occasions, such as
the monthly birthday meal
and the Thanksgiving and
Christmas meals, over 100
meals are served.
The meals are good tasting, nutritious, and include
varied menus and are served
by pleasant and smiling
staff members. The centers
suggested donation is $4 per
meal for those 60 and older
and $7 for those under 60.
The center receives some
funds from the state and our
county, which helps defray
costs, but with state fund
decreasing and the cost of
food increasing, the center
is in need of and grateful for
the contributions of patrons
and the community. Memorial gifts and individuals,
businesses, organizations,
and area church donations
are always appreciated. The
center recently held a garage
sale fundraiser, as well as a
Halloween chili supper. Other fundraisers are planned
from time to time. Bingo is
held on Thursday evenings
with some proceeds going to
the center.
Each month, there is a
product of the month that
gives people another way to
donate. The product may be
sugar, flour, cake mixes, paper supplies, dish soap, etc.
For November, the product
was hats and gloves, which
were donated to the elementary school. The December
products laundry soap,
sugar, flour, pudding, jello,
cereals, crackers, or canned
vegetables will be donated
to the Food Pantry.
The Nutrition Center is
open for group meetings and

most mornings you will find

some local men meeting for
coffee. Afternoons usually
include games of pool. Once
a month, a bridge group
meets to play cards. Rotary
holds its meeting at the center. There is an on-going jigsaw puzzle and a book loaning area. A computer and
a magnifying machine are
also available.
To reserve the center or
an activity or meeting, call
David Merriett at 660-7365725. The center depends on
volunteer help. Volunteers
are needed and welcomed
for work in the center and
for meal delivery. Volunteer
hours for meal delivery are
weekdays from 11:00 a.m.
to 12:00 noon and for lunch
service at the center from
11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The center staff and
board of directors welcome
questions, comments, and
suggestions on how the
center can better serve the
community. The following
people serve at the center:
David Merriett, Center Administrator; Juli Buhman,
cook; Sharon Patton, Karen
Niles, Edna Oxford, Doris
Johnson, and Ken Kemerling. Members of the board
of directors are Bob Fleming, chairman; Dixie Stoner,
Steve Irvine, Darryl Lowrey,
June Olsufka, and Annette
Kaplan. The Tarkio Nutrition Center is here to serve
the community. Stop by the
center for a meal and or activity. You are always welcome and your donations
are always appreciated.
