STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

The most important and parallel to the system of Caliphate was the spiritual hierarchy of Sufism;
a phenomenon with extraordinary benefits that were brought to the Islamic world and made
millions of people turn into Muslim. The most important orders (salasil-e tareeqat) were Qadriya,
Chishtiya, Soharwardiya and Naqshbandiya which contributed to an amazing extent for
propagation of Islam. By the passage of time, this institute i.e., Sufism, adopted many trends
according to the demographic preferences and regional norms. Be it Hazrat Sheikh Ahmad
Sirhindi (R.A) in Naqshbandiya order or be it Khawaja Ghareeb Nawaz (R.A) in Chishtiya
order , all of them invested their whole asset of life in propagation of Islam. Yet there is a
delicate thing to be noticed that their attempt was to welfare the Islam and not to establish an
abbacy to gain political dominance. An overwhelming concord between people and allocation of
political wisdom was true marvel of them; on the other hand disinterested effort to rescue people
from ignorance was another dimension of their campaign. And there is no denying of the fact
that nothing has hampered the evolution of political wisdom in sub-continent half as worse as the
abbacy and its ingredients. Let us have a glance over the self-made convenience of Sajjada
Nasheen concept and its worth that was based and still is on the genetic spirituality. Sajjada
Nashin is defined as A descendant of a Sufi Pir (Saint) or descendant of a disciple of a Pir, who
tends to the shrine which is erected over the Pir's tomb or grave, known as a Dargah or Mazar.
What to say of a system that denies the very principles of Islam and teaches a pathetic and
discriminatory lesson to turn the people into disciples and starts a one-man show on genetic
bases. There had never been any concept of abbacy and genetic transfer of spiritual powers on
the cost of image of Islam yet the most popular Dargahaan are always found engaged in gaining
political popularity and public dominance merely on the bases on genetic spiritual powers.

Islam has clearly forbidden these sorts of discriminations but abbots in shrines (Sajjada
Nasheens) turned into mini-monarchs and started to rule people by manipulating their religious
status. This trend on the name of Sufism, on one side has empowered these mini-monarchs to a
dangerous extent and on the other side a nation-wide ignorance regarding to Sufism has clutched
people. Be it our current prime minister or be it our ex-foreign minister all belong to the same
category for all came in to political arena by virtue of their fate-less disciples.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY:


The present study will investigate the historical background of Sajjada Nasheens. It will try to
see how it form and how it played vital role in the Pakistan politics. The aim of the study is to
explore the facts that how the Sajjada Nasheens contributed in the society of Pakistan. It will
also explain the influence of Sajjada Nasheens in politics and how they played key role in public
relinquishing such a political and social anomaly. The duty will also examine role of Sajjada
Nasheens in Sufism. It will also explain the role of Sajjada Nasheen in modern times and what
are their objectives. It also analyzes the effort of Sajjada Nasheens how they are tried to bind the
politics with Sufism. It will also explore the facts why Sajjada Nasheens support the politics.
LITERATUR REVIEW:
Mysticism history at politics at a south Asian policy Albany, written by Ernst, Carl. This
research, based on rare Persian manuscripts preserved in Sufi shrines in the medieval town of
Khuldabad, a major centre of pilgrimage in the Indian Deccan, reveals the mystical teachings and
practices of the Chishti Sufi order as taught by the ecstatic Shaykh Burhan al-Din Gharib
(d.1337) and his disciples. This second edition has a preface in which Ernst details the advances
in the study of Sufism since the appearance.

Multan a province of the mughal Empire, 1525-1751, written by Humaira Faiz. In this a book
a history of the Multan region during the Mughal period which deals with the Mughal
antecedents, political history, administrative structure, judicial system and revenue. A final
chapter looks at religion, culture and social and economic aspects.
Empire and Islam written by David Gilmartin. In this book, David Gilmartin discusses the
movement of Pakistan and the role of religo-political parties in the creation of Pakistan. Politics,
economic and the kingdom of God, these concerns combined to produce the movement for
Pakistan. The first three chapters of this book outline the imperial system of authority established
by the British in Punjab, and the relationship of Islamic ideas and institutions to that system and
the political role of Islam in British Punjab. Last three chapters discussed a series of
predominantly urban Muslim political parties challenged the colonial structure, which lacked
central Islamic symbols.
Sons of bread and sons of soul, an article written by Dr.Tnvir Anjum. This article analyzing
the phenomenon of sajjada nashins among the descendants of Baba Farid. This article explore its
meaning and trace the historical roots of the concept of Sajjada Nishin. The writer discussed the
Sajjada Nishini in the family of Khawaja Moeen-ud-din Chishti. And also discussed Sajjada
Nishini among the descendants of Baba Farid.

QUESTIONS TO BE ADDRESSED:
What is abbacy or monastery system?
What is nature and scope of abbacy in Sufism?
What are the key factors that enable the abbot class to form an extra ordinary influence in
politics?
What are external and internal factors behind their empowerment?
What is role of public in relinquishing such a political and social anomaly?

What are the remedies to be adopted to filter such ambiguities?

METHODOLOGY:
The study on role of sajjada nashins in Pakistan will employ narrative descriptive as well as
exploratory and analytical approaches within the discipline of history. It will try to narrate and
describe historical sketch of sajjada nashins, why they emerged and what are their objectives and
goals in politics. It will also narrate the Sufi orders of sajjada nashins. It will explain the role of
sajjada nashins in the politics. It will also try to explore the facts, why sajjada nashins were
interested in politics. It will also analyze the sajjada nashins leaderships role in the politics of
Pakistan.
Both primary and secondary sources will be used in the conduct of research. Primary sources
encompass speeches and official documents. In secondary sources books, articles and media
sources would be articulated.

ORGANIZATION OF RESEARCH:
This study is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction about Sufism and its
contributions in spreading Islam; with a brief introduction of concept of Sajjada Nasheen. The
second chapter lime lights the bases of Sajjada Nasheeni and its origins. Chapter three, the most
important one, highlights the causes of political popularity of Sajjada Nasheens in Pakistan and
its results. Second last chapter describes the social and political anomalies caused by Sajjada
Nasheens. The last chapter is about remedies and potential cover-ups for saving the institute of
Sufism and triggering political wisdom among masses
