ANSYS LAB 3

Tutorial
Today, we will look at:
Meshing: Mapped mesh, mesh refinement
Plane stress analysis
Symmetry boundary conditions
Plane stress analysis
Square plate (2m x 2m) with central circular hole of 0.5m radius is 10mm thick
and made from steel. In -plane tensile force of 1kN applied as pressure loading

Step 1: Preferences = structural

Step 2: Element type = structural plane 4 node
Ansys will take thickness of plane elements to be 1 unless otherwise specified. If
the thickness is to be specified, you must use the options key in the element
type window and change Element behaviour K3 to Plane strs w/thk.

Step 3: To enter the thickness, use the Real Constant option in the Preprocessor,

Step 4: Material Properties

Material Props> Material Models>Structural>Linear>Elastic>Isotropic
Enter the Youngs modulus in the EX box and the Poissons ratio value in the
PRXY box.

Step 5: To model the square plate with a circular hole in the centre, we will take
symmetry into account and just model of the plate. So create a rectangle 1m x
1m. Next, create a circle with a radius of 0.5 m. Then use the Boolean subtract

operation to subtract the circle from the square (Subtract> pick square> apply>
pick circle>ok)

Step 6 Meshing
This area has 5 lines and we cannot use a mapped mesh as it is. To get over this
problem, we concatenate two of the lines.
[NOTE: Conditions for Area Mapped Meshing in Ansys
Area must be bounded by 3 or 4 lines
Area must have equal number of element divisions specified on opposite sides
If area bounded by 3 lines, number of element divisions must be equal and even
on all sides
If area has more than 4 lines, you can sometimes combine or concatenate lines
to reduce the number to 4.]

In this case, concatenate lines 2 & 3

Meshing>Concatenate>Lines>Pick lines 2 & 3

Mesh tool>Size controls>Lines, set> Pick all> No el divisions = 20

Step 7: Apply loads and boundary conditions

Axes of symmetry displacement normal to line is zero
Solution>Define Loads>Apply>Structural>Displacement>Symmetry BC> On
lines

Apply pressure load on RHS. Note Pressure in Ansys is positive when acting
towards the line

Step 8: Solve> Current LS

Step 9 General postprocessor

Plot results>Deformed shape>Def + undeformed

Max displacement = 0.972e-6m= 0.001mm

Contour plot>Element Solution>x-component of stress

Max stress = 322246 N/m2=0.322 MPa.

Step 10: Refine the mesh. Go back to the postprocessor and open the mesh tool
Refine at All Elements> Level 1 refinement

Step 11: Solve again, then examine results in General Postprocessor

s
Max displacement gone from .972e-6m to .975e-6m. Change is less than 0.3%

X component of stress:

Max stress = 321396 N/m2. Change in max stress less than 0.3%
