ing and maybe work on the

task force
COLUMBUS (AP) — Saying
the state faces a public health
emergency, Ohio’s governor has
created a task force to battle pre-
scription painkiller abuse.
Gov. Ted Strickland on Friday
announced that the panel would
identify ways to help police and
health care officials stop the wide-
spread abuse of pain medication.
Strickland says Ohio also is
making $250,000 in federal grants
available for police to expand
their efforts combatting painkiller
abuse.
And, the governor says he
wants more doctors and pharma-
cists to use a statewide computer
system that allows them to track
suspicious prescriptions.
Deaths from accidental drug
overdoses, many of them blamed
on prescription painkillers, are
now the leading cause of acciden-
tal death in Ohio, surpassing car
crashes.

Overall, Kasich earned nearly
$1.4 million in 2008, just under
$1.2 million of which was tax-
able. That included $265,000 as
a Fox News commentator and
$165,000 in various speaking

Ohio Chief Justice Moyer dies at 70

Ohio Supreme Court Chief
Justice Thomas Moyer,
the longest-serving current
state Supreme Court chief
justice in the United States,
died Friday at age 70.
Moyer was admitted to a
Columbus hospital Thursday
morning after experienc-
ing gastrointestinal prob-
lems and died Friday after-
noon, court spokesman
Chris Davey said. Over
the past few months Moyer
had health problems that
weren’t believed to be life-
threatening.
Moyer, the second-lon-
gest-serving Ohio chief jus-

I remember watching a
show one time when a finan-
cial guru/life coach (Suze
Orman, to be exact, who I
find equal parts fascinating
and terrifying) was talking
about what one’s job should
be like. She said that going
to work every day should be
the same as opening a pres-
ent. Walking in the door, one
should feel excited, exhila-
rated and inspired.
Doesn’t that sound
delightful? Too good to be
true? Well, for many peo-
ple, it is. I think the quote
stuck with me because it is
so drastically different than
the reality for so many men
and women. Who thinks of
work that way?
I asked some of my
friends recently how they
felt about their professions
and I was surprised at how
many people really, honestly
love their jobs. I figured I’d
get mostly negative feed-
back - that it’s an obligation,
something to dread and basi-
cally a requirement to stay
alive. I got a lot of positive
responses, though, which I
think is truly wonderful. I
detected a common theme
among those who cherish
their jobs. Most feel that way
because it is rewarding – not
monetarily but intrinsically.

motherhood

It is fulfilling; it is some-
thing they actually want to
do. Unfortunately for many
individuals, though, this is
not within reach.
With the state of the econ-
omy, many citizens are for-
tunate to even have a job, let
alone one they’re crazy about.
That leaves numerous people
stuck in jobs where they’re
literally miserable ... but
with bills to pay and mouths
to feed, they unequivocally
are stuck. Many of the work-
ing population loathing their
employment are disconsolate
for a number of reasons: the
work is not challenging, they
do not feel appreciated and
are “just a number,” they are
forced to answer to a supe-
rior who treats them poorly
or abuses power. There are a
variety of reasons employees
might resent their occupa-
tions.
The majority of human
beings have probably had a
job at some point in their
lives that was devoid of
satisfaction, one that they
couldn’t wait to leave and
embark on an enjoyable
career ... but what if there
isn’t an option? Sure, it’s
just a job; it doesn’t have to
define everything about you.
But think about how much
time you spend at work and
how, if you are suffering
there, it affects everything
else in your life to some
degree. If the only choice
you have is to stay there,
then it’s crucial to spend as
much time outside of work
on what you delight in and
are passionate about, to seek
fulfillment in other areas of
your life — this is the goal
of so many people.
I, for one, still don’t know
what I want to be when I
grow up and I know I’m not
alone here. We’re all in this
life together, sometimes just
trying to make it through
another day, but hopefully
finding happiness along the
way. It can be tough. For
now, I’m content “opening
the present” every day in my
own way - by rolling around
on the ground playing with
my kids, appreciating the
time I have with my husband
and writing about all of it
right here.
