Kebanyakan orang bekerja untuk mencari nafkah.Mereka memproduksi barang dan
jasa.Barang ada yang diproduksi di peternakan seperti jagung dan susu,atau di pabrik
seperti mobil dan kertas.Jasa disediakan oleh beberapa hal seperti sekolah,rumah
sakit,dan toko.Beberapa orang menyediakan barang;beberapa yang lain menyediakan
jasa;yang lain menyediakan kedua-duanya barang dan jasa.Misalnya di sorum,seorang
pria membeli mobil,atau dia menyewa jasa yang membantunya untuk mengisi
mobilnya.Pekerjaan yang orang lakukan disebut aktivitas ekonomi mereka.Sistem
ekonomis adalah keseluruhan apa yang orang lakukan dan apa yang orang
inginkan.Pekerjaan yang orang pikul juga menyediakan apa yang mereka butuhkan
atau menyediakannya dengan uang.Orang membeli barang penting dengan uang.
