- All temple priests will identify items and so will some store owners.
- There are some stores you can steal from. Stolen (fenced) items cannot be
sold.
- Only items of value or those significant at that point of the game are

- If you don't get the reward I have listed, it is because your Charisma
isn't high enough.
Advice
- There is more than enough XP in the game to reach the XP limit with a party
of six without wasting time killing respawning monsters for XP. I reached
it before I reached Baldur's Gate!
- Similarly there is more than enough GP without having to pick up every
sword and sell it. I had 100,000 GP on reaching Baldur's Gate.
Tips
- You get 1/10th of the XP for killing a non-hostile target so, to make them
hostile, pick their pockets until you fail.
- If there is a person in a room you want to take items from, punch them
unconscious first so they can't call the guard.

Gnomes, Halflings and Dwarfs receive bonuses against their saving throws for
Rod/Staff/Wand and Spells. Halflings and Dwarfs also get a bonus against
Paralyze/Poison/Death. The bonus varies with class.
So for example a Level 7 Dwarf Cleric would have saving throws of 4/8/10/13/9
and the chance of being poisoned is very unlikely.

Dual class and multi class characters use the best saving throws of each
class. For example a Cleric/Mage would get an impressive bonus of 4/5/2/2/5.

Paladins must be Lawful Good, Thieves cannot be Lawful Good, Rangers must be
Good, Druids must be True Neutral and Bards can be any mix of Neutral.
If your character has a good alignment your starting reputation will receive a
bonus whereas if you are evil you will receive a penalty.
Your alignment will determine the Archmagi robe a mage can wear and there is
one weapon that can only be used by good characters. Your alignment may
determine whether you are offered some quests or are attacked by certain
characters.

Reroll until you have at least 80 ability points to distribute. It is easier
to roll a high total for characters with fixed minimums. For example the CHR
of a Paladin will always be rounded up to 17. This way I was able to create
a Ranger with 98 (out of the maximum of 108) ability points.
On your adventures you will pick up tomes that raise each ability by one,
there are two for Wisdom and one for each of the other abilities. Bare in
mind there is also one more for Wisdom in TOTSC. First I'll give the reasons
then a summary table.
Strength STR
This should be 18 for fighters (it is more important to reroll a high total
number of ability points than get a good 18/xx, since this will be raised to
19 later), a fixed minimum of 13 for Rangers, a fixed minimum of 12 for
Paladins and at least 7 (raised to 8) for other classes.
Dexterity DEX
This should be 18 for thieves, 17 for tough characters (raised to 18 and AC -4
later), 18 if you plan to use missile weapons (raised to 19 and Missile Attack
Adjust +3 later), a fixed minimum of 13 for Rangers (so it doesn't effect
their stealth ability) and a fixed minimum of 12 for Bards (so it doesn't
effect their pick pocket ability). For other classes that really need the
points elsewhere (at the expense of AC) drop it to 5 (raised to 6).
Constitution CON
This is simple; give 18 to Warriors and 15 (raised to 16) for all others. If
you aren't a warrior and really need the points elsewhere (at the expense of
a maximum of 20 HP) then drop it to 6 (raised to 7).
Intelligence INT
This should be 18 for Wizards and Bards. Since there are no more than 18
spells at each level in BG+TOTSC, an INT of 17 raised to 18 is sufficient, but
there are more than 18 spells at some levels in BG2 requiring an INT of 19.
Set it to 3 for other classes.
Wisdom WIS
This should be 18 for Priests, a fixed minimum of 14 for Rangers and a fixed
minimum of 13 for Paladins since they get spells later! It should be 8
(raised to 10) for Bards so it doesn't affect their amazing lore ability. Set
it to 3 for other classes.
Charisma CHR
There is a fixed minimum of 17 for Paladins and 15 for Druids and Bards. For
others go for a minimum of 9 (raised to 10) but if you want to make friends,
get higher rewards for your quests and get things cheap go for 18 (or as much
as you can spare). When in shops and during conversation, you should always
make the person in your group with the highest Charisma your group leader.

Warriors should concentrate on a single close combat weapon and a ranged
weapon. All classes should consider the magical weapons available throughout
the game before assigning proficiency points. You should make sure members of
your party specialise in different weapons when availability is limited.
There are 2 large swords, 4 small swords, a long and a short bow, a heavy and
a light crossbow, 2 axes, a Halberd (spear), a War Hammer (blunt) but no
spiked weapons with a +2 THACO. Then there is the Short Sword of Backstabbing
and Drizzt's Scimitars with a +3 THACO.

Humans (but not Paladins and Bards) can dual class to Fighter/Thief,
Fighter/Mage, Fighter/Cleric, Fighter/Druid, Mage/Cleric, Mage/Thief,
Thief/Cleric, Cleric/Ranger and vice versa.
You must have 15 for the prime requisite ability of the first (or initial)
class and 17 for the prime requisite for the second (or final) class. You
must also have the required minimum ability points for the second class, for
example a Thief who wishes to dual class into a Thief/Conjurer must have 15
DEX, 17 INT and also 15 CON. You must have the right alignment for the second
class, for example a Fighter who wishes to dual class into a Fighter/Druid
must be True Neutral.
When choosing weapon abilities for a fighter, thief or mage, choose different
weapons for your second class to that of your first class, as both will
become available after you have past the level of your first class. If you
dual class to a cleric or a druid make sure you choose weapons they are
permitted to use (eg a Fighter/Cleric cannot use swords, so if you used
points on them as a fighter they will have been wasted).
BG2 UPDATE: In BG2 you can actually add proficiency points to your first
class once it becomes active again. For example a L7 Fighter that Duals to
a Thief can assign up to 5 proficiency points to any weapon.
Dual classing allows you to make use of all the XP past your final level. For
example, within the 89,000 XP limit in Baldur's Gate you would become a Level
7 Fighter at 64,000 OR you could start as a Thief and end up as a Level 6
Thief and dual class to a Level 7 Fighter (84,000XP) with 3x backstab, stealth
and other abilities. This character will go on to a Level 8 Fighter in TOTSC
just as a pure fighter would. The biggest advantage of creating a dual class
Fighter rather than a multiclass one is that you can master weapons.
If you want to be a thief, mage, or druid, start as a fighter then dual class
at level 5 or 6. That way you will be able to wear armor and helmets. If you
want to be a cleric you should consider starting as a ranger (specialise in
cleric weapons) then dual class at level 2 (or 5 for BG, 6 for TOTSC). That
way you will be able to cast both Cleric and Druid spells.
In TOTSC, instead of being a Level 8 Fighter you could be a Level 7 Druid /
Level 8 Fighter (160,000XP) who can shapeshift and cast level 4 spells! (P.S.
use a Scimitar, preferably one of Drizzt's). The only disadvantage is that
you will have less hit points than a pure fighter.

p.26 Dual Classing
The only classes than cannot dual class are the Paladin, Ranger, and
Bard, though others may have restrictions on which classes they can
switch to. The character must also have 15 in all the prime requisites
of his first class, and 17 in those of the second class.
This is incorrect as the Ranger can dual class (to a Cleric/Ranger).

In case you think I missed this, I can tell you it is not there in version
1.1.4315. Furthermore it will not appear in TOTSC on imported savegames.
Locked Chests - Does anyone know how to open them?
A few chests are locked and whether you try and bash them open with your
strongest fighter, pick the lock with your best thief or have a mage cast
the knock spell they will not open.
In TOTSC you get the message "The mechanism that operates this door does not
have a conventional lock, and may be warded against simple spells".
