Dalhousie Gazette Editor-in-chief

The Dalhousie Gazette Publishing Society is looking to hire an Editor-in-chief for the remainder
of the 2015-16 publishing year (as soon as possible until April 6, 2016). The editor-in-chief is
responsible for the overall operations and management of the society, publication of the weekly
print edition of the Dalhousie Gazette newspaper and administration of Dalgazette.com.
The responsibilities of the Editor-in-chief include, but are not limited to:

maintaining professional relations within the staff;


maintaining amicable relations with other societies within the union;
the content, layout, training of staff and general management of the newspaper;
calling regular staff meetings which will decide editorial positions, content and other
matters concerning the newspaper, as well as chairing these meetings in a fair and
democratic fashion;
providing direction and guidance to staff managers, and communicating expectations,
changes and decisions to them in a clear and prompt manner;
presenting a written annual report to the annual general meeting of the society;
serving as a non-voting member of the societys Publishing Board and Hiring Committee;
ratifying The Dalhousie Gazette Publishing Society as a society of the Dalhousie Student
Union before September 30 of each academic year;
keeping the active profiles of the society up to date;
penalizing or dismissing editors and managers provided they violate the responsibilities
set out annually in the contracts, and/or the ethics code and disciplinary policies set out
and made available online;
delegating and assigning all tasks within the Society so that duties are performed in a
timely and effective manner;
providing constructive and helpful mentorship to all editors and contributors should it be
needed;
identifying key coverage areas and opportunities for the newspaper, and planning said
coverage across sections when necessary;
acting to resolve internal conflicts of the newspaper or the society, and referring these to
Dalhousie Student Union counselling when necessary, in accordance with the discipline
policy;
acting as a public head of the society for political and recruitment efforts;
championing the reputation and role of the Gazette within the Dalhousie and Halifax
communities.

The Editor-in-chief is a member of the Gazettes paid staff. They must be available for
communication with staff and volunteers on an ongoing basis for 40 hours a week.
The Editor-in-chief must be:

either a part-time or full-time student at Dalhousie or the University of Kings College,


and member of its respective student union;

an editor at the Dalhousie Gazette in the past three years;


not a representative on the Dalhousie Student Union Council, Board of Governors or
Senate

The best candidates will provide both a cover letter detailing a passion and a vision for the
Gazette and as well as any documents showcasing the candidates experience in management and
journalism
The Dalhousie Gazette is a student-run newspaper based in Halifax, Nova Scotia on the campus
of Dalhousie University. It is the oldest campus paper in Canada, published consistently since
1868. We publish stories significant to people both on-campus and in the wider Halifax
community.
