God Almighty, We Are Waiting

PASSING THE PEACE

YOUNG PEOPLES MESSAGE
LIGHTING THE ADVENT CANDLE
The evening of the year is upon us.
We enter the darkness and wait for lights return.
We light one candle to remind us of Gods light
which has come to us all in Christ.
We open our hearts to that light,
and ask for help to shine with the brilliance of love.
We light a second candle to remind us
of the light of justice in the words of the prophets
We open our hearts to the light of justice,
and ask for help in making a just world.

Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them
the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to
Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and
when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and
pay him homage.

CENTERING HYMN Come, Come, Emmanuel

Come, come, Emmanuel,
Come, Emmanuel
OPENING TO GOD
In the night sky a small star, winking glory, silent, steady.
In the headlines terror, sorrow's heavy blanket.
In the maiden a baby, hidden, beloved already.
In the darkness soldiers gathering, taking orders.
In the stable a manger prepared since the beginning.
In the streets low murmurs, fear and longing.
In the fields shepherds, half sober, unsuspecting.
In the silence angels ready with songs of healing.
In the window a child's face, waiting, waiting.
The mother and the angels take a deep breath.

CELTIC CALL TO WORSHIP

We gather; We, your people, gather,
for it is time to prepare:
angels are about to burst forth into song,
singing of the peace and hope we need.
We gather; We, your people, gather,
with expectation our guest:
for joy is inviting us to join in the dance
of the shepherds around the night fire.
We gather; We, your people, gather,
eager to begin the celebration:
people; longing to reach Bethlehem;
people; eager to kneel at the manger;
people; ready to cradle the Babe;
people; hoping to be made whole.
We gather; We, your people, gather.
CAROL

We light a third candle to remind us of the magi,

who call us to travel beyond our comfort to find the Christ
We open our hearts to your light,
and ask for help to carry that light into a dark world.
three candles are lit
All our waiting is a waiting for God.
God of our hearts, we wait for you alone.

SGH

When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of
them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped
over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had
stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house,
they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and
paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered
him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned
in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by
another road.
Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a
dream and said, Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to
Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search
for the child, to destroy him. Then Joseph got up, took the child
and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there
until the death of Herod.

Matthew 2:1-14

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of

Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, Where
is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed
his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. When
King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with
him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the
people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They
told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the
prophet:
And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who is to shepherd my people Israel.

God Almighty, we are waiting for a savior to appear.

Meet us in our desert journey; give a sign that you are near:
burning bushes, parted waters, food aplenty in the wild.
As we look for signs & wonders, help us see you in a child.

God Incarnate, we are waiting for the feast day of your birth.
Looking back & looking forward to the Christ's return to earth.
Help us to proclaim the gospel, 'til the world is reconciled.
Let us set your holy table for each woman, man, & child.

Humbled by our sinful weakness, at your mercy we will bow.
Search our hearts & make us ready,
speak in language strong & mild,
help each one of us, your people, to receive you like a child.
