Karen Hopper Thank you for assisting in service. Here are a couple of notes to help you through
the service. Please light the candles before worship. The scripture readings are
included in this copy, but please read the scripture from a Bible. You may bring
your own or use the one in the pulpit. (If you wish to use a translation other than
the NRSV, please speak to Michael before the service.) Also, the microphone on the
pulpit is only on when you are speaking, so please stay at the pulpit during the first
hymn and the Song of Praise. If it is more comfortable, you may turn and watch the
monitors during the singing. Don’t worry; your singing will not go through the
sound system.

Leader: The magi came from faraway places, following a star.
People: We come to worship, and the star sheds light on our lives.
Leader: The magi brought gifts to offer the child,
People: We too bring gifts—ourselves, our hopes, our dreams.
Leader: Shepherds and magi—the meek and the mighty—all were welcome in
Bethlehem.
People: We too come to Bethlehem, and we will return to our homes
rejoicing.

Karen Hopper *Prayer of Brokenness & Reconciliation
God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with
God, yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. Let us be honest
before God and join in a prayer of brokenness and reconciliation:
Almighty God, Light of the World, you caused light to shine out of
darkness in the advent of Jesus our Christ; you continually open to us the
ways we are to prepare. We confess our unwillingness to see the light and
to walk in your ways. We have not always opened our eyes to the needs of
others, and our feet have wandered from the paths of justice and peace.
We ask that the Spirit of Christ be born anew within us, that our hearts
may be stirred to glorify the nativity with acts of compassion and service.
Amen.
The good news in Christ is that when we face ourselves and God with the
1
awareness of our need, we are given grace to grow, and courage to continue the
journey. Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. In Jesus Christ we are
forgiven!

Leader: The peace of the world came with the birth of Jesus. May Christ’s
peace be with you all.
People: And also with you.
Leader: Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

Lord’s Prayer—together
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom
come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Karen Hopper Matthew 2:7-12
7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when
the star had appeared. 8Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search diligently
for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay
him homage.’ 9When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went
the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was.
10When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11On
entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid
him homage. Then, opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts of gold,
frankincense, and myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod,
they left for their own country by another road.
